Expert 2000 Pontiac Firebird review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Firebird is Pontiac’s version of the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car, and the future looks dim for both. Combined sales of the rear-drive Firebird and Camaro are only half those of the rival Ford Mustang, and General Motors may drop these cars by 2002.

The Firebird model lineup continues in base, Formula and Trans Am price ranges with few changes for 2000.

Exterior
Like the Camaro, Firebird comes in hatchback coupe and convertible body styles, with removable T-top roof panels available on the coupe. The convertible comes with a power soft-top and a glass rear window with a defogger.

Styling on the Firebird is the same as Camaro’s except for Pontiac’s trademark twin-port grille, different taillights and exterior details.

Interior
Cramped rear quarters and low-to-the-ground front bucket seats are Firebird traditions. Cargo space of 34 cubic feet in the coupe and 13 cubic feet in the convertible is adequate, given these aren’t family cars. The dashboard is attractive and functional, and the standard center console contains cupholders and useful storage bins.

Under the Hood
Base Firebirds come with a 200-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 engine and either a standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic. The performance-oriented Formula coupe and Trans Am coupe and convertible have a 5.7-liter V-8 and either a standard four-speed automatic or a no cost six-speed manual.

Standard horsepower on the V-8 is 305, but the optional WS6 Ram Air package boosts output to 320.

Performance
The stiff-riding, noisy, gas-guzzling V-8 Firebirds are dinosaurs in the 21st century. Though the V-6 models are tamer and easier to live with, they are still leftovers from a different generation.

Loved my firebirds . I bought a new 1994 and a 1999 . V6 but awesome power it’s a Pontiac I replaced window motors , antenna motor, alternator, rotar, flip light motor ,oil gastric seals , I sold it and regretted it , but I figured I was grown up in my late 30’s but boy am I looking for the last one made miss my car , fun to drive and it got so many compliments black no tee tops no ram hood but beautiful I’ve noticed people haven’t taken care of theirs in the used one’s I’m looking for , how sad wish Pontiac would make them again beautiful styling cars , it had 210,000. Miles and was going strong

  • GREAT CAR!

I loved my 2000 Firebird! Make sure you get it with T-Tops! It was comfortable and had no major issues. Ran great and at that time I was sorry I had sold it.

  • Freakin sweet!

Love the car! A lot of power in my trans am and it's really reliable with over 165k miles. Interior is standard turn-of-the century GM cost cutting, but it works fine and the car is an absolute blast to drive.

  • Last of a dying breed

Hard to find these cars in great condition. True American muscle and one of the last staples Pontiac has in the auto world. LS1 provides lots of power and reliability. Replacement parts are inexpensive and easy to find. Fun car to own and drive!

  • Best Bang For Buck You Can Get

The 98-02 V8 Firebird and Trans Am are one of the best bang for your buck performance cars you can buy. They feature the LS1 engine, GM?s all new V8 engine design first appearing in the 1997 Corvette, to replace the ancient small block. Pair that with the also legendary T56 manual transmission and you are sitting in one of the highest power-to-cost ratio cars in the world. My 2000 Firebird Trans Am has been nothing but fun. It?s fast, it?s reliable, and it gets pretty good Gas mileage! I get pretty close to, if not, 30 mpg on the PA turnpike. The interior isn?t the best, being that it?s all hard plastic it feels like sitting in a fisher-price toy. The seats are difficult to get comfortable in and I?m usually ready to find a place to stretch out after about 30 minutes of driving. The center console armrest hurts my elbow after a while because it?s hard plastic, and I started keeping a cloth rag in the console to put underneath my elbow. Comfort wise it?s not the best, but if you?re looking for a luxurious ride, you are looking at the wrong car. The black interiors look pretty nice, but any other color interior just looks ugly and will forever have the ?old? car look. T tops are nice in the warm weather but they?re a tradeoff. They leak in the rain, some are better than others. Even mine which has brand new seals will still drip if I?m sitting still in the rain. Apart from all that, I love this car. They aren?t too loud stock, but they can sound insane depending on how aggressive of an exhaust you put on. The LS1 doesn?t quite have the deep grumble ?gluglugluglugluglug? of the older small block, but it does have its own very distinct, more modern note. My car in bright red with an aggressive exhaust is definitely a head-turner. These cars are super easy to work on and parts are not expensive at all. If you?re looking at a higher mileage one (90,000 miles and up) you may be looking at doing some light work like spark plugs or water pump or power steering hoses which tend to start leaking at this age. Put some good name brand tires on these cars, at least 275 wide. Stock 245 wide tires are ok for a V6 but the V8 is a little overwhelming for them. Whether you have a V6 or V8, 275 wide tires are a must. They look much nicer and they benefit the whole car with improved handling and braking. Overall I love this car and would definitely buy it again. And again. It?s hard to beat this much performance on such a low price. The mustangs weren?t able to surpass the horsepower of these things until 2011 (minus the cobra), which was 9 years after these were killed! Put a good radio in it, a nice exhaust, and cruise around in it, or throw a cam and heads at it and take it to the drag strip, or modify the suspension and turn it into an autocross monster. There is plenty of aftermarket to make this thing do whatever you want.

  • Very reliable and stylish

This car has been very dependable. For the price you can pull up to any event and draw a crown as if you were in a very expensive sports car. Fuel economy is not bad for the sports car that it is. I would recommend this car to anyone that like a trill when they go for a drive.
