Expert 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Pontiac gives the base Grand Prix engine more horsepower and adds a racy pace-car replica as a special-edition model for 2000.

The Grand Prix coupe is the foundation for Pontiac’s entry in NASCAR stock-car competition, and a modified production Grand Prix paced the Daytona 500 last February. To mark the occasion, Pontiac is offering 2,000 replicas of the pace car with silver paint, checkered flag and Daytona 500 graphics on the rear flanks, a rear spoiler and hood air intakes. Under the hood will be a 240-horsepower supercharged V-6 engine.

Exterior
Though usually considered a midsize car, cars.com includes the Grand Prix with full-size models because its 110.5-inch wheelbase (distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels) exceeds 110, the magic number for full-size status. The Grand Prix’s overall length of 196.5 inches is in the same ballpark as the BMW 740I and Lexus LS400, full size luxury sedans.

Grand Prix is unique in this class for being available as both a two-door coupe and foor-door sedan. The curvaceous styling is the same on both except for the rear doors and rear side panels.

Interior
The Grand Prix is shorter than the Bonneville in both wheelbase and length, yet still plenty roomy. Headroom is plentiful for all seats, and there is adequate leg space in back even when the front seats are as far back as they go. The deep trunk holds 16 cubic feet of cargo. A pass-through section in the rear seatback allows storage of long items.

Under the Hood
The front-drive Grand Prix comes in three flavors: mild, spicy and hot. The mild SE sedan uses a base 3.1-liter V-6 with 175 horsepower, 15 more than last year from a variety of changes.

The spicy variety is a 200-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 that is optional on the SE and standard on GT models. The hottest is a supercharged version of the 3.8-liter with 240 horsepower that is part of the GTP Package available on GT models. All come with a four-speed automatic transmission and standard traction control.

  • Very great running car

I bought this 3 years ago my truck engine blew. Pd $1200.00 rust, air didn't cool but happy. Would like another after virus is cured, no loan for me right now. 1 bad thing the car rides too low to ground I hit bottom hard on muffler. Living in Michigan I get stuck pretty easy in snow. This summer I got a short somewhere, car runs great but nothing electric works, seats windows, heater fan works great. Back left tail light, thus left blinker wont work tried few bulbs, fuses waiting to get pulled over about that. Needs new brakes, whole muffler system from hitting ground. If I get a 10 ticket to fix tail light I'm gonna have to junk it. It's old have no idea what up keep it had before me. I really like the ride, size and looks of car. It's not worth fixing all this now, body is pretty rusted. If I can fix this short myself I'll drive it till it dies. Very reliable start.

  • I wish Pontiac was still around

I bought a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP in 2008. It had 110,000 miles on it. Ten years and 338,000 miles latter I finally had to let it go. This car was one of the best and most fun to drive cars I ever had. It was very reliable and very comfortable to drive. It was a great car and I often had complete strangers walk up to me and ask to buy it. If I could do it all over again I would buy another one.

  • I loved my GP!

This care was sold to me for $400 by a friend. This car lasted me 3 years and had 217, 000 miles on it when I got rid of it. This was a zippy car that aged well. I loved the take off!

  • I love it

A great value with only 45,000 miles when I bought mine for only 3500$, my first car. I would give it a 10 out of 5 in value and reliability if i could. Great car, I would've paid at least a few grand more if i had to.

  • Very Reliable First Car

This is a very dependable first car and has given me very little to no trouble. I used this car to commute to high school and various sports practices and have it at college now with a short commute and a hour drive home on weekends. A very spacious car with plenty of trunk space. I enjoyed the power the V6 offers while still getting fair gas mileage for such a large car. Sits low to the ground to give that sporty feel while still riding comfortably. A cheaper option for a well made vehicle. Paint is starting to wear in some places but not noticeable, especially for a 17 year old car that sits outside year round in the Midwest. Overall a great vehicle!

  • The Ultimate Beater!!!

Let me start off by saying two things: 1. I'm not suggesting you don't take care of this car. It has nice performance, features, and appearance for the used price, and deserves proper maintenance. Many people get 300,000 mi + with this particular engine, and you could, too. 2. I'm a broke college student in a rural area, who must commute 30 miles to either work or school every day of the week. I was given this car by my dad at 130,000 mi in 2010 with the expectation that it was on its last legs (ironically, he's gone through two lemons since handing this over to me). Due to my economic situation and unfamiliarity with cars, I am unable to maintain it ideally, aside from essential repairs and oil changes. That being said, this car takes a beating exceptionally well. Four years later (now at 250,000 mi), it's still running perfectly. Aside from when the 12-year-old battery finally died, it has NEVER left me stranded. I've taken it from Maryland to Michigan and to Florida on over 10 occasions, and it scoffs at the occasional 2 hour commutes to DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis. It's also built like a TANK. It's survived two deer collisions with a busted headlight and a scratch to show for it. Unessential/minor things have a tendency to fail. I've had to replace the back speakers, head unit, two window regulators (another has failed, but I've resorted to duct tape for now), front axles, tires and brake-stuff when needed, battery, and MAF sensor twice (first replacement was defective). Something causes a large puddle to appear on the front-passenger floor if I park nose-up in the rain. Also it had a problem where the keys wouldn't come out of the ignition and it wouldn't shift out of park unless I used the corresponding releases. A common problem-- get under the shifter thing. The wires that are connected to the unit that informs the car of the shifter-thing position should be snapped! Re-establish and lengthen the connections with bits of wire and a soldering iron (it appears the manufacturer made the connections too short and unable to handle stress). It's a free fix that I did three years ago, requiring no other maintenance, in case anyone runs into that issue. These little things seem to be common with this model. The good thing about that is it tends to impact the value of this car--making it cheap, cheap, cheap! This is my first and so far only car, and I've found it super-easy to work on. Under the hood, it's spacious and well laid-out, unlike most newer cars/imports. I've done many repairs myself with no prior knowledge. Parts are cheap and plentiful, as well as how-tos and diagrams. For that reason, despite its issues, I would definitely recommend this car to someone in my situation. Someone without a lot of money, who needs reliable transportation for little effort. Someone who wants to learn the ins-and-outs of car ownership and repair with minimal repercussion. Additionally, it handles fantastically for its size, and has quite a lot of pick-up, too. It's braved Michigan winters and Maryland coastal floods without loss of control (thanks, trac control!!). It's a very safe and easy car for a new driver, and also happens to be pretty fun! If you can handle the small issues, you'll get a lot of mileage out of this drivetrain!
