996 Turbo model

This review is for the turbo model. The turbo is a different, higher-quality engine with no IMS to worry about. Even at 16 years old and 90k+ miles, the acceleration on this car is amazing. The sensation of the turbo building acceleration as the revs increase is like riding a huge wave. There is nothing on the market that will give you the performance this car will at the same price point. The manual is better than the tiptronic. It wasn't until 09 that porsche switched over to the dual clutch that is faster than the manual.

First Porsche.

I bought a 2001 carrera 4 cabrio manual. It's a blast. If you're thinking about one, don't second guess it, get it.

IMS issue overblown

Plenty of cars have no IMS problem. The reason is quite simple. Mostly the 6 speed models will be affected due to high red line RPM's. While the Tiptronic seldom gets red lined. Often clutch replacement need already shows that the driver does rev it high all the time. The Tiptronic does the thinking for the driver and engine. Mine has 84K miles and the engine runs as smooth as possible. Frequent oil change either 10-40W or 15-50W in hot area's and or high mileage is recommended. check the oil every 2 weeks for contamination. If still worried you can install a sensor kit which warns you about "metal" in the oil.

01 turbo

I would like to thank Larry Williams at Hiline Motorsports for his help in the purchase of the car. I found that he made it a easy transaction and his knowledge about cars was very helpful. I will look to him for my next car.

Want great fun for a reasonable price

When I was a young man I owned a Porsche (early 1970's), it was OK. Now that I am a GPa this 911 has been the greast car for pure fun of driving I have owned. There have been 450SL's, Z's, Cadillac's to Turbo-Diesel trucks. This is the "one". Never mind what you hear about what could go wrong. They have been building a great vechile for decades. I bought this one used and purchased a great warranty, I have had small issues. They all are fixable and never has anyone not like my ride.

IMS Failure

For all of the reviews relating to the IMS or IFS, this does not apply to the Turbo, GT3 or GT2. As far as failures to base 996, it is a very real problem.

great car for the buck

Replace the IMS bearing, Rear Main Seal and look at the clutch while you're there. Both problems addressed, you are good to go for good. Short money for this car, unbelievable performance and sound, comfort good, all you could want. Daily driver.
