A Great Car for New England

One of the reasons I bought my Legacy was it's striking good looks. The side profile and rear of the the car especially are superb. The 17" alloy rims along with low profile tires help give the car a sleek look, certainly making it one of the best looking cars in it's class at the time. The interior is of good quality for the year. Soft touch padding is placed throughout the vehicle, with very few cheap plastics around. The layout of the drivers seat gives you all the standards like cruise control and variable intermittent wipers, while showing continuity in terms of accessory placement. In fact, the wiper controls are almost identical to my first Subaru, a 1995 Legacy. The radio and climate controls are simple and easy to use. CD player and auxiliary input are standard. The storage compartment is adequate as well and so are the cup holders. The car comfortably seats 4 and can seat five if necessary, although the middle fifth seat is not very pleasant. Overall the interior of the car is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. It just lacks real rear cup holders and a center armrest for the rear seats. The Legacy is not all looks, however. This car dives into corners and almost begs you to go faster. Steering is tight and this car gives a very solid ride in large part to Subaru's symmetrical all wheel drive system. As a New England native, the standard awd is another reason I bought this car. The Legacy performs very well in the snow, although not quite as well as the Forester. The one knock I have on it's performance is the standard 2.5l engine. This car is definitely underpowered. When traveling with multiple passengers, the Legacy struggles to get out of it's own way. Even when driving solo, steep inclines are not your friend. I would recommend looking for the 3.0R model if you can find one. Along with more upscale amenities such as heated leather seats, premium sound, and optional navigation, this model solves the power problem without a huge drop in fuel economy ratings. Speaking of which, don't expect to get even 30 mpg with this car. Driving around town and commuting to work, I only average about 20mpg, a downside to all wheel drive. However, this does not include much highway driving. Overall I have been pleased with the car, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid used vehicle.

Amazing and reliable!

This was my first car. 2008 Subaru Legacy Special Edition. The car is simply amazing all around. Great power for a 4-cylinder, all wheel drive works amazing (especially in snow), and was relatively cheap to maintain! Never had any large problems!

Great Choice!!

This car has been the most amazing and dependable car I have ever driven. I currently own the 2.5L Special Edition with a 5-speed manual. The car is responsive and easy to maneuver. Even with the small 4-cylinder, the car has plenty of power to get around town. I live in Colorado and it even does extremely well in high altitude mountain areas. Subaru's also hold their value extremely well! It's an awesome choice!

My Subaru probably saved my life today

I got t-boned in the driver's side of my 08 Subaru Legacy this morning by a driver running a red light at about 35mph, and the only injuries I have are bruised rib muscles and a small scratch on my side. I was hit directly in the cabin area, shattering my driver's window and crushing my doors, but my Subaru saved me. The B-pillar between the front and rear doors held strong, the side curtain airbags and driver's seat side airbag deployed, and kinks all around the side of the car show how the impact was distributed away from me. Thanks to my Subaru, I was able to get out my passenger side and walk away from the accident. I don't know how many cars could have saved me like this, but I'm now a lifelong Subaru fan, and I want to replace it with the exact same model. I loved its ride, comfort, handling, steering response, appearance both inside and out, and I can't wait to get another one just like it. I know it's corny, but I can't help but think of the Subaru commercials that show wrecked Subarus and say "They lived," and think "I lived".

MOST RELIABLE vehicle I have Ever Owned!

I have driven and owned multiple brands for 35 years. Since, I purchased my First Subaru in 2002, I have been Forever swayed by the Reliability and Traction of this vehicle; Especially when driving it within the Snow. I currently live in Boston, MA. and should you desire a vehicle that is priced well also can be acquired with various options, reasonably priced as well, then this vehicle is for You. I purchased my current 2008 Subaru Legacy in June 2007 with 3 miles and currently have only 57K on the speedometer; mostly drive it to work within the city. I will admit since I have purchased my vehicle I have replaced ALL 4 tires three times; the AWD does chew up your tires and should you get a Flat you CAN NOT replace only one tire, You Must Replace All 4 tires Because of the AWD System. Now, I have seen multiple brands of other vehicles trapped upon Snow covered roads although I have Never had an Issue within this type of environment. My current Fuel Mileage is 21 MPG City and 24 MPG Highway. Should I ever decide to buy another vehicle I Will purchase another Subaru possibly a Hybrid version; for greater Fuel mileage.

Maybe I got the statisical anomaly?

I've had my 2008 Subaru Legacy 2.5L Limited since October 27th, 2007. When I bought it, it has 8 miles, 4 of those from my test drive. It now has 130K. PROS: It handles well in inclement weather. It holds corners very well. It has many features I wasn't looking for like heated windshield wipers, heated seats, dual zone climate control, etc. Fair MPG considering it is AWD. I get 23-24MPG combined; 28-30 HWY. Highly rated in crash tests in 2008. CONS: In 130K miles, catalytic converter has been replaced twice. 3 different recalls related to ECM programming and emissions compliance. Power pump failed at 58K miles (had extended warranty), and at 130K miles sounds like it's going to go again. Both head gaskets were replaced at 110K miles because of leaks Tire rotation is essential as the AWD chews tires up like crazy. Sunroof track causing binding; has since it was new. They always just greased it up excessively while car was under warranty. Transmission downshifts hard between 3-2, and has since it was new.
