2010 Toyota Highlander - overall, FUN to drive!

First off, this car is FUN to drive! I have the 2010 Highlander Limited with navigation. DON'T let the dealer talk you into the spray coating on the bottom!! It does not really deaden sound that much, and tends to overheat, melt, and then drip onto the garage floor. The drivability is great, the limited feature set is nice. Overall I really like this SUV! However, you need to be aware of some caveats: a) Poor gas mileage if you are mostly on local streets or in stop-and-go traffic. The car is fun enough that it does not matter to me, but I am feeling the pinch at the pump! b) The backup camera gets condensate or maybe even a leak inside!! It is also poorly placed so it is hard to determine the real distance. I will be making a warranty claim soon. c) Sometimes, the engine misses a beat when accelerating or decelerating. If I suddenly press on the gas, or if I suddenly lift my foot off the gas before the engine gets up to speed during a sharp acceleration, there is a definite racing effect where the engine sounds and feels like nothing is happening. This has not been a real issue - the SUV stll goes and stops OK. But this is typical of a lot of new engines - the 2008 MDX I test drove, as well as the 2011 Kia Sorento, both had this problem in SPADES! Very minor on the Highlander. d) Does not come with mat for the back - what??? That's crazy! My first SUV, so I did not know the dealers were so greedy. Ended up with a satisfactory aftermarket for the whole vehicle from Weathertech. e) Navigation is sometimes wiggy. Mostly it is OK - however they do not tell you how to get an update cd! The worst part is the voice navigation - tried several times with NO success. f) Garage door link will not sync with my openers. I bought the openers new a year before the Highlander purchase, so it's not like they are old! g) Snow - did OK but if more than 8 inches the factory tires SUCK. h) Personal peeve - may not affect everyone. The driver side seatbelt is hard to reach, and the buckle part tends to stick between the wall and my seat when I grab it to buckle up. i) Car is FUN to drive!!

Adequate not special

This car is pretty much what it claims to be - middle everything. No pleasant surprises but disappointment everywhere you might fear it. Not much comfort for more than four passengers. In fact, even the front seats are only OK - certainly not a joy to ride. Definitely not a quiet car - road noise, bounce, engine noise are all high. Does not handle particularly well - in fairness, what do you expect from an SUV. Gas mileage disappointing - a little below the rated numbers in my experience, which aren't very impressive to start with. Radio and sound good. Fit and finish good. No blind spots a big plus. Gets through tough snow on hill with AWD. All in all it goes forward and backward and keeps you dry and warm. But, I can't imagine anybody just wanting to go out for a drive because they have a Highlander.

First and Last

I traded in my Huyndai for this Toyota because they were running a sale on these. I have always heard a lot about Toyota quality. Well so far, this car has been back to the dealer two times for a water leak that was finally fixed. There was also an annoying rattling in the door which was discovered to be some screws that were rattling on the bottom. The four-cyllinder engine is very rough and the transmission smoother. A friend of mine bought a new Grand Cherokee. I wish I would have waited to buy that. The GC is quiter, looks better, and costs less. This will be my last Toyota.

Toyota Standard remains very high

Excellent car to replace 1999 Toyota Sienna Van. THe performance is better with its V-6 motor. The gas mileage is a little less though. It is a fun car to drive and we still have the van too since it is so reliable too.

repeat owner

this is my second highlander. bought a 2003 limited new.had it for seven no problem years. that is why i stayed with toyota. this time i went with the base model. did not want to spend the extra money on many of the things i never used. the 2010 feels a little larger and rides great. glad i stayed with a toyota.

Very good SUV

Handles very well, roomy interior and well placed controls. Good mileage for a V6 with AWD and a weight of over 4,000 pounds. Toyota could have done a better job in tire selection, the Toyo A20 Open Country tires are below standard, in my opinion for a +$35,000 vehicle

Love the car, hate the nav system

I've driven my new highlander ltd (has most of the high end options) for 5k miles now, after owning a 99 4runner for 4 years. I love the comfort (I'm 6'3"), the ride and the options on the car and would highly recommend it EXCEPT for the Navigation system..a total waste of money. First, the displayed level of detail (street names, secondary xxx,rte numbers) is so minimal until you get to very small scales that it is useless in finding a particular road/intersection. Perhaps most annoying is the inability to change/search ANYTHING if you're going more a few mph. This means on a long trip even your passenger can't search for a restaurant/poi etc unless you pull over. Same w the blue tooth phone, you can only access 'favorites' if the car is moving unless you voice dial..but then you have to know the number. Don't hesitate to buy this car but save your money and get a good Garmin GPS..you'll save a ton and its much more convenient. This lockout is becoming common on many makes (a misguided safety "feature") but at least one of the big Japanese mfgs has opted out..smart move. The dual climate w rear works well and the mileage displays are interesting. I'm getting 18-19 mpg according to the display w mostly highway driving. Interstate is around 20mpg. Using the 3rd row seats is easy but, as expected, you then have minimal cargo space behind them.

Great SUV

Love the Highlander. We got the base model 4wd, and don't feel like we're missing out on GPS and fancy rims. Only drawback to the Highlander is poor city MPG. It does fine on the highways, but I'm getting about 12 MPG in the city. For me, my wife, infant, and 90lb poodle, it's the perfect size.

Toyota + 0% Financing = WOOHOO!!!

The ride alone sold me - floats along like a dream! Would prefer a V6 but for the gas mileage its fair.
