Competes with: Honda Civic Si, Subaru WRX, an S2000 with more than a hundred grand under the hood

Looks like: A 2019 Jetta. Charitably, it’s a sleeper; uncharitably, it’s a bit boring for a sporty version.

Drivetrain: 228-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine; six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission

Hits dealerships: Spring

The sportier flavor of Volkswagen’s Jetta, the Jetta GLI, returns to the lineup for 2019 following the introduction of the vanilla Jetta at the 2018 Detroit auto show. For those looking for a sportier driving experience without paying premium or luxury prices, the GLI — appearing at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show — has been a strong option since it was first introduced for the 1984 model year.

Related: More 2019 Chicago Auto Show Coverage

The Jetta GLI will be available in three trim levels: base, Autobahn and a special 35th Anniversary edition. As part of a dying breed of sporty, lower-cost non-hatchback cars, the Jetta GLI’s chief competition is sparse. Only the Honda Civic Si sedan and Subaru WRX offer similar combinations of performance and relative affordability.

Exterior

The Jetta GLI doesn’t look much different than regular Jettas, which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your perspective. The grille is black and divided by a red line with red GLI badging near the passenger-side headlight. Blacked-out intake surrounds below the headlights and red GLI badging on the front fenders join unique 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels as the other main giveaways. Jetta GLIs also have dual exhaust tips and a very subtle rear spoiler.

Interior

The interior of the Jetta GLI follows the black-and-red theme, with red stitching on the steering wheel, shift lever, armrest, floormats and seats. Base models get black cloth seats with gray piping, while Autobahn models get black perforated leather seats. Anniversary models have unique tags on the seats, as well as special floormats and door sills. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard. The Volkswagen Digital Cockpit and a premium Beats Audio stereo are available, as is a sunroof.

Under the Hood

The Jetta GLI, as we had hoped, co-opts the Golf GTI’s powertrain. The 228-hp engine also produces 258 pounds-feet of torque — increases of 18 hp and 41 pounds-feet of torque over the previous GLI. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for those who like to row their own gears, and a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission is optional. The GLI also borrows the brakes from the Golf GTI and Golf R, as well as the GTI’s limited-slip differential. An available adjustable damping system — standard on the 35th Anniversary edition — lets the driver adjust suspension firmness.

Safety

Standard safety features abound on the Jetta GLI, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, a blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert and an automatic braking system that engages post-collision. LED headlights and taillights are also standard.

Lot of car for the price, most of the part underneath the hood are Audi's. Even though VW went low on quality with trims and plastic. They stood on mark on technology, drivability and sportiness. Lot of fun to drive with DSG especially when shifting to manual mode. Great car overall!!

E brake kicks in and everything fun ride NOT. Oh yeah forgot about it not being able to find the correct gear either its in sleepy mode or steroid mode

  • You will fall in love with driving again

The best way to describe the driving experience of my GLI S: 1. It combines the steering and road feel from a classic 4000cs Quattro or Corrado SLC with 21 century safety equipment and tasty DSG (if you haven't driven one of these go find a 99 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro and drive it) 2. A proven VW/Audi 2.0t mill with oodles of power you will even need for city and highway driving 3. Understated(I don't need to impress you to be amazing) teutonic stying that will age well 4. It can easily haul your family and groceries around 5. It has an impressive warranty (only KIA tops it). 6. Haldex mech diff is a technological marvel that makes you not miss buying a cop a4 or 3 series. 7. It has more personality than any bimmer product I have driven 8. Nothing comes close to it's driving dynamics and steering feel. NOTHING. Everything else (Accord GT, Camry TRD, K5, Sonata, etc) are not in the same league for this price point. All for under 30k The negatives (they are some worrisome niggles) 1. Plasticky interior. Noticeable cost cutting. Not an Audi interior. 2. There are some interior quality control issues like minor rattles and buzzing coming from the driver's side and rear view mirror 3. Reliability remains questionable as the car ages like most of the VW's I have owned in the past. Lease it. Buy only if you can haggle and get a low cap cost. 4. Resale value is not a strong suit. 5. It will not be close to being as reliable as it's competition. 6. VWoA customer service is not great.

  • Most bang for the buck

Going from a Nissan Altima to a GLI is night and day. I bought a 2019 in March 2020 for 18k... 19.5 out the door. Some cost cutting inside , but I had a Sentra a rental a month ago and there is no comparison. The sport mode is great, my 4 year tells me to “turn the turbo on”. Manual transmission is smooth and if you have hesitations, its very forgiving. In economy I get 29 around the suburbs and 40mpg on the highway. And 90mph feels like 60. As long as it stays reliable, it’s a great car. Looks sharp. And the door shutting IS SOLID. The MQB platform is super solid. Consider there are so many leftovers in stock, it’s a no brainer. My dad has a 2019 Jetta and that’s a bargain too.

  • Great upgrade

This is my 5th Jetta. Last one was a SEL. The GLI is a step up. Very smooth ride with a nice pick up. This is not your ordinary VW. You have to read the manual several times over too really enjoy the luxury of this model.

  • Fun car

Big upgrade from a regular Jetta. best bang for the buck when it comes to performance/styling/comfort. Seats are comfortable, engine is solid, dsg transmission very quick shifting, only downside is the exhaust should be a bit louder.

  • Most reliable car I’ve owned.

This car meet all my needs. It’s very spacious in the back seat with plenty of leg room. Also has plenty of get up and go. The blind spot monitoring system works great. The heated seats work amazing. They kick on right away. Overall a great car.

  • It's an upgrade far better than the last

I have owned 4 volkswagens. A 2000 jetta, 2016 jetta sport. A 2017 GTI tuned, manual all that. And now this 35th GLI. While sharing many of the parts with my GTI it is night and day. Far more comfortable. The DSG is supremely fast with the same amount of work itll be far more powerful and reliable than my GTI was. The features for a base model are also impressive. When you sit inside, it feels much more expensive.
