Great Family Car

We bought our Volvo XC90 2 years ago as a preowned vehicle. We were looking for a fimily car with enough space for 2 kids including strollers and baggage. For us the Volvo XC90 was the best choice as it offered just what we wanted. You can easily fit our family of 4 including 2 child seats, 3 suitcases and 2 strollers. The ride comfort is great, the car has all the bells and whistles you may ask for. Reliabilty was very good, we never had any technical problem, we only had to replace one smal light bulb in 2 years.

Safety first and foremost -- Buy Volvo

I purchased a 2004 as a certified used vehicle with about 10,000 miles. I paid an additional $1000 to purchase it from the dealership where I had been servicing my 2001 S80, a commuter car I purchased used and certified while waiting for an XC90 to become available. The S80 became our third car, for the new drivers in our family -- safe, not too powoerful, and seats four comfortably. I love my Volvos, but, yes, I recommend a service warranty. Volvo has been extraordinarily responsive in replacing items under warranty, although not all items are under warranty and there is a deductible. My DC dealership and VOLVO is now on the third corporate ownership since I purchased my car, but the personnel have stayed. I judge a company on how well they treat their employees as well as their customers. Yes, my transmission was replaced not once but twice, under warranty -- there is another related part that also needed to be replaced, and the second time they realized it was this much less expensive part that caused the transmission to fail. I am currently looking for another used, certified VOLVO. Safety, safety, safety is my priority. l also like service contracts generally, and I dislike financial surprises when it comes to major purchases while raising a family and paying college tuition. Houses are enough of a gamble for me, and cars are not far behind. Buy the service contract, and know that you will save money on your health insurance, and may also save the life of a loved one. What price safety? Priceless. Our 100 lb. females drive this car easily. Super responsive and easy to park. Carries furniture, sod, whatever!

Just What I Was Looking For!

I'd been looking to downsize for a while and this is just what I needed. As a 20-something I was buying a different car each of the last 3 years. First, I had to have a Lincoln MKZ, then a Hummer H3 and with each trade-in I'd lose my shirt on the deal. It was immature and impulsive. This time I decided to evaluate my "needs" instead of my "wants" and came up with the XC90. 1) I needed something that would last a long time and from many of the sites I saw Volvo's being sold with 150-200k miles on them! (I needed to stop throwing my money away and purchase a reliable, long-lasting car). 2) I needed something with a lot of room in it (for trips and our dogs), yet comfortable and safe. As a newly wed, I had to start thinking about the other's in my life...my wife and future children. It is very important to me to meet this need. I reviewed the saftey features of the XC90 and felt that they were world-class. Volvo does safety - period! 3) Ok, so I "wanted" a luxury vehicle with all the trimmings, but didn't want to pay the BMW/Lexus price. I enjoy having the leather interior with heated seats and power everything. I also like driving a unique vehicle and appreciate the quality product of higher-end cars. The XC90 meets all of these, without carrying the stigma of being a "showoff". I come from a very small community in western NY, so this is an important aspect...as only doctors and lawyers are seen driving Mercedes or BMW's. I test drove the XC90 T6 AWD and loved the power and pick-up (especially when compared to the H3)! It's run great so far as I've driven it accross the country now to TX. Will point out the downsides: Have to use high grade gas and a lot of it. The XC90 is a heavy fuel user and the fill-ups can get expensive! Good Luck and Enjoy!

When is enough enough?

We bought this car so that we could have a reliable car for winter driving here in Colorado. When it is running, I love it. Every time it makes a small noise or another warning light comes on, I hate it. Who would have thought that you could have almost $10,000 in repairs & 5 sets of tires before 100,000 miles. Wish I had my Suburban back & can't wait to see this one gone!

Fun to drive and great ride

My Volvo has over 100,000 miles and other than routine maintenace I have not had any problems. It is very smooth and handles well for an SUV. It is surprizing the ride. The equipment has held up and the interior still looks almost new. Very safe car for my family too.

The best used XC90 ever

I think this car is the most reliable used car ever. It has heated seats I would expect to by it for $17,000.

Bad Transmission

I bought my Volvo three years ago, used from a certified dealership. I found out today that I needed to replace my transmission and the cost of $5k, I asked the repair shop, who has that kind of money to spend on a transmission, This is ridiculous. Get the warranty. I also needed a new alarm siren and my heating went out. Dont look this gift horse in the mouth, it will cost you

Bad Transmission - Research the History

I too have been hit by the BAD TRANSMISSION bug. Not only was it bad enough to have it fail, we were out of state over the Thanksgiving holiday when it happened. It only had 61k miles and needed to be replaced or rebuilt. All of the other luxuries that come with it DO NOT overcome the transmission problems. What good is 5 star comfort, handling, styling, and design when you get hit with a $5000 repair bill after you find out there have been numerous failures out there. After missing 4 days of work ($1500) and school for my kids, this cost my family and I dearly.
