Before you buy any BMW older than 2018, check out the Isley V BMW lawsuit. You will find the V8 in all pre 2018 BMW's to be problematic for oil leaks and valve stem failures due to defective engine design and excessive heat. I have this X5 with the V8 and it's a wonderful car to drive and look at. It's my 5th BMW and by far the most reliable. Unfortunately, even with all the meticulous care, my car has experienced the oil leak and smoking exhaust, just like all the N63 & N63TU engines through 2018 will experience this problem and the cost to repair exceeds $20K from the dealer. If you find one that had the valve stem seals replaced, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, it's a great vehicle in many ways.

Bought this 2018 X5 plug-in hybrid in Feb 2023 with 13750 miles, by January 2024 it had 4 major repairs and was not drivable totaling $10K out of pocket in my first year of used car ownership. The electric parking break module, windshield washer pump, rear air suspension and topped off with transmission issues at 36700 miles were the defects. The transmission issue would have been in warranty except for age. BMW North America offers to pay for $2200 in parts but left me to pay the $3K in labor acknowledging the car was not right but not fully standing behind its reliability. Traded it in at a huge loss as the final issues had potential to lead to reduced compressor life and more transmission issues. Very disappointed as I loved the car but could not stomach nearly $1K a month etc cost of ownership. Probably would have stuck with it if BMW stood behind it, but….
