Emissions light

This is the X5d and I have had years of intermittent issues with emissions warning lights coming on and sometimes it came on on my way home from the BMW service department when that is the reason I took it to them. The light came on again and now I’m told the filter needs replacing and the part is $3500 and I’m sure the labor will be close to $2000. I have 125000 miles on the car so thinking it should not be a problem but the value of the car may be so low that putting this kind of money in it would be worth it. Getter rid of the car with this problem is likely a big loss situation. Don’t know what to do. Is there a recall for this that I don’t know about? I bought this car with about 20000 miles on it from the dealer. Thanks.
