What a car it is. The horizontally opposed 3.8-liter 355-horse "boxer" nosebleeder with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing is an engine that fully confirms the notion that German engineering is next to cleanliness and will get the car to 100 mph from a standstill in the time it took to count out Mike Tyson. Both events took 10 seconds (well, 10.2 in a Targa 4S that we tested in the May 2006 issue).
The two pieces of (Targa top) glass stretch five feet four inches front to back and in width are 37 inches. When the top is open, the hole above your head works out to 33 inches across and two feet deep. We measured it. There is also a power-operated shade between you and the glass; Porsche says the glass is made to shut out most ultraviolet sunlight. The Targa top, which is framed stylishly by two swaths of polished aluminum running down both sides of the roof, also results in a hatchback, the only one you'll find in the 911 lineup, and it frees up eight cubic feet of usable space behind the front seats. Finished in Meteor Gray Metallic with a full black leather interior, this Targa 4S is in outstanding condition. The Targa body style, with its movable glass roof and hatchback is unique and was only available for two years. Still quick by todays standards, it will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.3 sec., (Car and Driver magazine), with a top speed of 179 mph (Excellence magazine).
In addition to its many standard features, this Targa 4S is equipped with the Sport Chrono Package Plus, Adaptive Sport Seats, 19 in. Carrera Sport wheels (unmarked), heated front seats, self-dimming mirrors, Bose surround with a 6-disc CD changer, and navigation. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S installed in April, 2021, in good condition. Additions include a built-in Passport SRX radar/laser defense system, an installed CTEK battery tender, paint protection film on the front third of the body and exterior mirrors. Disclosure: There are marks on the front fascias - in, but not through the protective film. Otherwise, the car is pristine, inside and out.
A current DME (over-rev) scan indicates virtually zero ignitions in ranges 4, 5, & 6, with 8 in range 3, so no over-revs. The accessory drive belt and its two tensioning idler rollers (pulleys) were replaced April, 2021, and the sunshade motor was replaced 4/3/25. Oil (DT40) & filter have been changed frequently and regularly (most recently 4/30/25).
