With the average price of a new car in Cars.com’s inventory hovering distressingly close to the $50,000 mark, affordability is, no doubt, rising on shoppers’ priority list. That’s all the more true if you’re shopping for an SUV (and who isn’t these days?), which typically carries a price premium over, say, a sedan, coupe or hatchback. If “This means you!” as those no-trespassing signs state, then we got you covered in one of Cars.com’s most popular news articles of the past month: a roundup of the cheapest new SUVs you can buy right now.

The modestly priced models making the grade run from $23,395 at lowest to just under $27,000 at the high, and they are all subcompacts or compacts that, as a condition for consideration, offer Cars.com’s mandatory SUV distinction of offering all-wheel drive (generally tacking an additional $1,500 to $2,000 to the listed price). Bargain-basement buys from cheapest to least cheapest are specified trim levels of the 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross, 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 2024 Volkswagen Taos, 2024 Honda HR-V, 2024 Hyundai Kona, 2024 Kia Seltos, 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, 2024 Mazda CX-30 and 2024 Buick Encore GX.

If, by chance, you’ve already settled on the Honda Pilot as your next new-SUV purchase, we have something to say about that, as well — specifically with regard to whether you should buy the 2024 model versus tracking down a 2023 model for a discount as dealers try to move ’em off the lot to make way for new stock. In short, with the 2024 Pilot carrying over unchanged from its 2023 redesign and the new model year bumping up the base price by around $800, it’s a no-brainer to try to snag a 2023 and save some cash.
