10 Biggest News Stories of the Week: Chevrolet Equinox Outshines Lincoln Nautilus
If you want to stay competitive in the uber-competitive compact SUV market, you can’t sit still for too long. The Chevrolet Equinox pressed its luck as the last of the Bow-Tie brand’s SUVs to get a turn in the recent round of redesigns. At last, GM is sunsetting the Equinox’s 6-model-years-old generation, and it’s the dawn of a new day for 2025. And, according to Cars.com reviewer Aaron Bragman’s comprehensive critique of the all-new Equinox — one of our most popular articles of the past week — the future is bright.

Bragman applauds the 2025 Equinox’s dramatically different exterior styling that breaks the boredom of the mild-mannered, carlike appearance of the outgoing version in favor of sturdy, square-jawed masculinity, a revised and simplified lineup that includes a trio of distinctive trims, a quiet cabin and comfortable, a well-controlled ride, high-quality cabin appointments (even at the entry level), user-friendly infotainment tech, generous safety features and an attractive starting price just under 30 grand. The biggest drawback is the engine — a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 175 horsepower — for which acceleration is aggressively unremarkable whether you opt for the standard front-wheel-drive setup with a continuously variable automatic transmission or spring for all-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic.

If you’d prefer to head upmarket and upsize your SUV shopping, you’ll want to check out this week’s sixth-place finisher, a rapid-fire rundown of the pros and cons of the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus. The luxury mid-size SUV earned our reviewers’ appreciation for its impressively upscale and thoughtfully designed interior; dazzling onboard tech, particularly its 48-inch panoramic display spanning the entire dashboard; optional hybrid powertrain that provides a hearty electrically assisted boost in horsepower and fuel economy; Excite driving mode that lives up to its name, while keeping things Normal preserves the plush, quintessentially Lincoln ride; and usable, confidence-inspiring hands-free driving system. We were less impressed with the Nautilus’ laggy, moaning CVT, hard-to-handle regenerative braking in the hybrid variant and quick-mounting expense if you’re too loose when checking the options boxes.
