Honda Civic: Which Should You Buy, 2023 or 2024?

Most significant changes: The Honda Civic sedan was redesigned for 2022 and rolled into the 2023 model year with a slight price increase. A redesigned version of the sport-tuned Type R variant also returned for model-year 2023. For 2024, the Civic again carries over with a small price increase.

The 2024 Honda Civic is again available in sedan and hatchback variants, with both body styles seeing price hikes of $200 for most of the trim levels. The sporty Civic Si and performanced-tuned Civic Type R, however, see increases of $300 and $1,000, respectively.

2024 Trim Levels

All trim levels carry over for 2024. The sedan is again available in LX, Sport, EX, Si and Touring trims; the hatchback comes in LX, Sport, EX-L, Sport Touring and Type R trims.

Powertrain Specs and MPG

The standard engine for the sedan and the hatchback is a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder; optional is a 180-hp, turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder. In the sedan, the engines are paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission as standard equipment; in the hatch, the CVT is standard and a six-speed manual transmission is available as a no-cost option. The base 2.0-liter is EPA-rated 31/40/35 mpg city/highway/combined, while the turbo gets 33/42/36 mpg.

The sport-oriented Si trim is only available as a sedan and uses a 200-hp version of the turbo 1.5-liter engine. The performance-focused Type R sits at the top of the lineup in terms of price and power; it comes only as a four-seat hatchback and is powered by a 315-hp, turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder. A six-speed manual is the only transmission offered in either variant. The Si gets an EPA-estimated 27/37/31 mpg, and the Type R gets an estimated 22/28/24 mpg (official EPA figures for 2024 aren’t in yet).

Standard on the Civic is a 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system, and optional is a larger 9-inch screen mounted high on the dash; it has a dedicated volume knob and a big prominent home button, making it easy to navigate. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless with the 9-inch system in the Touring but require a cable when paired with the 7-inch display. The Touring trim also comes with a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster. Other available features include navigation and an uplevel sound system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2024 Civic comes standard with a lot of features that include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane departure steering assist and lane departure warning. Available safety features depending on trim and model include rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot warning.

The 2024 Honda Civic sedan and hatchback are Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Picks, the agency’s second highest designation.

If you can find a 2023 version, opt for it to save a little bit of money on regular and Si versions — or a lot of money on a Type R.
