BUYER BEWARE: AVOID BLASIUS PREOWNED AT ALL COSTS This

BUYER BEWARE: AVOID BLASIUS PREOWNED AT ALL COSTS This is my first-ever business review, and I don’t write them lightly. I believe in giving businesses the benefit of the doubt, but my experience with Blasius Preowned requires complete transparency to warn potential buyers. If you value your time, money, or sanity, stay far away from Blasius Preowned. They are the epitome of an untrustworthy business that plays games with their customers and lacks any semblance of integrity. I had been searching for a specific 2022 truck trim and came across one with 61k miles at Blasius Preowned. It was listed at a reasonable price, so I went for a test drive. The truck seemed fine—until I discovered a junkyard engine in it. When I questioned this during the sale, I was assured that everything was in perfect working condition and that the third-party service contract I purchased would cover anything that went wrong. Spoiler alert: everything went wrong. Less than a week after purchasing the truck, disaster struck. While driving to and from work for a few days after purchase, I noticed strange issues while driving and discovered a massive pile of oil under the truck. A GMC dealer inspection revealed: • A broken CV axle • A severe transfer case transmission fluid leak that left the truck drenched in transmission fluid I brought the truck back to Blasius under their 60-day dealer warranty, only to learn that the technician who had supposedly inspected the truck before sale had been fired days earlier. Things went from bad to worse when the ENGINE blew—while on their property! I demanded a full refund, giving them one last chance to make things right before involving a lawyer and the state of Connecticut. Instead of taking responsibility, they held me hostage with shady tactics. They refused a refund and insisted they needed to repair the truck before offering trade-in credit—but only within their auto group. The truck was unsafe to drive, and I shudder to think what could have happened if the engine had blown while I was driving it home. Their solution? Replace the engine with a remanufactured one but try to charge it to the service contract company instead of honoring their own dealer warranty. When the service contract company denied the claim due to timing, Blasius pretended they would cover the cost, only for me to find out later that GMC paid for it under warranty. When the truck was finally returned to me with the “new” engine, it sounded like it was misfiring at idle and also experiencing transmission issues. Their answer was to pressure me into trading it for another truck—at a worse trim level—while demanding an extra $10k down payment to make it same monthly payment that I had. I was forced to settle for less than I originally wanted, losing thousands of dollars and wasting over two and a half months dealing with their incompetence. To make matters worse, even their service department admitted I had a bad experience. That’s right—the very people who were supposed to ensure my truck was safe acknowledged how poorly the situation was handled, yet no one took accountability to fix things properly. Blasius Preowned did not lose a dime in this debacle, but I lost thousands of dollars, time, and trust. They are the kind of business that takes advantage of their customers and hides behind empty promises. Their motto is “where friends send friends.” Well, I’ll tell you this: friends DO NOT send friends to Blasius Preowned. They will never see another dollar from me or anyone I know. Consider this your warning: stay far away.

Beware of Shady Business Practices I recently had a very

Beware of Shady Business Practices I recently had a very disappointing experience with Blasius of Middletown, and I feel compelled to warn others about their shady business practices. We agreed on a price for a vehicle, and after running hard credit checks and receiving approval for the purchase, I thought everything was settled. However, to my dismay, Blasius added over $1,300 in unnecessary fees at the last minute. These fees included charges for a redundant GPS tracker, which the RAM vehicle already had installed, and a $399 fee for an add-on to make the brake lights flash three times when the brakes are applied--a feature that costs only $25 on Amazon. Redundant GPS Tracker One of the most egregious charges was for a GPS tracker. This charge was completely redundant because RAM vehicles equipped with the Uconnect system already come with a built-in GPS feature. Uconnect provides comprehensive navigation and location services, making any additional GPS tracker unnecessary and an obvious attempt to charge customers for something they do not need. Brake Light Flasher Additionally, Blasius charged $399 for a brake light flasher that causes the brake lights to flash three times when the brakes are applied. This device is available on Amazon for just $25. Charging such an exorbitant amount for this simple add-on is not only unfair but also indicative of their exploitative practices. This behavior is exactly what the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) new Combating Auto Retail Scams (CARS) Rule aims to prevent. The CARS Rule, effective July 30, 2024, prohibits deceptive practices like bait-and-switch tactics and hidden fees. Under this rule, auto dealers must clearly disclose all costs and obtain informed consent from consumers for any add-ons. Violating this rule can result in significant penalties, including civil penalties of up to $50,120 per violation. For more information on the CARS Rule and your rights as a consumer, you can visit the FTC's official announcement here. Blasius of Middletown clearly disregards these principles of transparency and fairness. I strongly advise anyone considering doing business with them to be extremely cautious and to scrutinize all charges closely. Don't fall victim to their deceptive tactics like I did. #BlasiusOfMiddletown #CarBuying #ConsumerProtection #FTCRules #AutoScams #HiddenFees

Dealer response

The two items in question, John, are optional products that are offered to the customer during the course of the sales process. These products are not requisite to the ultimate sale of the vehicle and our sales process dictates that they should be presented in that manner by the salesperson. If that process was not properly followed in your case, we sincerely apologize and will be happy to refund you the cost of those items if applicable. We do thank you for noting this as we constantly rely on customer feedback and will certainly revisit this internally.

Consumer response

I appreciate the response from Blasius Pre-Owned Auto, but I must clarify some critical points. Mandatory Dealer Add-Ons When negotiating the purchase of my vehicle, I was explicitly informed by my salesperson that the additional charges were non-negotiable and could not be removed from the transaction. Despite being approved for financing through Chase Bank and believing that we had come to a mutual agreement on the sale price, these add-ons were presented as mandatory. This directly contradicts the dealership's statement that these items were optional. Lack of Transparency At no point during the sales process was it communicated to me that these add-ons were optional. If the salesperson had properly disclosed that these items were not mandatory, I would have declined them immediately. Instead, I was left with no choice but to accept these unnecessary and overpriced additions to finalize the purchase. Moreover, these add-ons were only disclosed after we had agreed on a price and I was approved for credit, which adds to the deceptive nature of the transaction. Misleading Information in Public Response The dealership's public response to my review suggests that these add-ons were offered as optional products and implies that there might have been a miscommunication. However, this portrayal is inaccurate and misleading. It does not reflect the actual experience I had at the dealership. If these add-ons were indeed optional, the truck would be in my driveway right now. Specific Concerns: Redundant GPS Tracker: The additional GPS tracker was entirely unnecessary because my RAM vehicle already has a built-in GPS feature through the Uconnect system. This charge was an obvious attempt to impose an unjustified cost on me. Brake Light Flasher: Charging $399 for a brake light flasher, a device that costs $25 on Amazon, is exploitative. This exorbitant markup is unfair and further exemplifies the dealership's lack of transparency. Consumer Protection This experience is precisely why the FTC's new Combating Auto Retail Scams (CARS) Rule has been established. It aims to prevent such deceptive practices by ensuring that all costs are clearly disclosed and that consumers give informed consent for any add-ons. Blasius of Middletown’s practices contradict the principles of transparency and fairness that this rule enforces. For other consumers, I strongly advise you to be extremely cautious and scrutinize all charges closely when dealing with this dealership. Do not fall victim to their deceptive tactics as I did. #BlasiusOfMiddletown #CarBuying #ConsumerProtection #FTCRules #AutoScams #HiddenFees

Dealer response

We apologize for any inconvenience you encountered. We do sell and have sold many vehicles to Massachusetts residents. In this case, the vehicle that you were interested in was a "Bargain Corner" vehicle. These vehicles are wholesale and are sold "As Is" but cannot be sold to Massachusetts residents. This is clearly stated on our website and your salesperson should have explained that to you. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and if you have any other questions, we encourage you to call us and we can further explain the situation.
