our expert's take

our expert's take

What it is: The Sportback e-tron is a plug-in hybrid hatchback — the only A3 hatchback offered in the U.S. It comes only with front-wheel drive and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. A unique driver-selected mode lets you recharge the plug-in battery while driving on the highway. For 2018, new 18-inch alloy wheels are available with the Sport Package.

What’s Special

  • Turbo 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor combine for 204 horsepower

  • 16-mile electric-only range

  • Recharges in about two hours on 240 volts; eight hours on 120 volts

Here's Info on the Regular A3:

What it is: Audi's entry-level A3 line received a mild update for the 2017 model year, which brought styling updates, additional features and a simplified powertrain lineup. The A3 is available as a sedan, convertible and Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid. In addition, the sedan is offered in the performance-oriented S3 guise. Competitors include the BMW 2 Series and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class.

(Skip to details on the S3)

Two data and charging USB ports and heated front seats are standard on all models. Premium Plus models add Audi Side Assist, which monitors blind-spot traffic, and the optional Technology Package adds a Bang & Olufsen sound system to its contents.

S3
The S3 is a performance variant of the A3 sedan with a 292-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, Quattro all-wheel drive and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. A new S Sport Package is available for 2018 with red brake calipers and the Audi magnetic ride suspension.

What’s Special

  • Performance tires on alloy wheels
  • Sport suspension
  • Larger brakes
  • Unique grille and exterior and interior trim

  • I purchased my 2018 Aude A3 e-tron in 2022.

I purchased my 2018 Aude A3 e-tron in 2022. It was in great shape and looked brand new. On a positive note, the car has good acceleration in either electric or gas mode. It handles very well with an excellent ride. The interior is well appointed and seats are very comfortable. Rear storage is not great but that's the price you pay for having large batteries for the e-drive. For driving back and forth to work I rarely have to use gas as the battery can handle it. The first year of ownership was great, no problems. However, in the second year things started to go wrong. One day, the starter battery was dead (I didn't leave the lights on). I had to go on Youtube to figure out how to jumpstart it (non-intuitive). A month later the car wouldn't accelerate beyond 10 km/hr. I managed to limp it to the dealership - needed a new throttle body. The other day the key fob battery died and I had to manually lock the car but the lights wouldn't shut off. It seems like weird things are starting to pop up. Fortunately I purchased an extended warranty. Basically, this car is fantastic when it functions properly, but not so great when some of its weird electrical/computer issues pop up. I plan on selling it before the warranty expires.

  • Love my A3 etron

I live in a coastal town south of LA and my etron is like a luxurious golf cart I can drive all electric most days. When i have the occasional longer drive the etron works for that and still gets about 42mpg. I am average 85mpg across both driving types. Interior quality is excellent and very comfortable. High quality fit and finish. It's a beautiful little machine you can buy for 25K with low mileage in like new condition as of 2021. Seems like a good deal. I am concerned about battery degradation, but there is a 10 year warranty on electric components including the battery. Despite the small size, you can still fit a large santa cruz mountain bike in the back with the front wheel removed.

  • First Audi I've owned.

I am enjoying it very much! I average over 40 mpg, which is good because work is 50 miles away. White with black Audi rims and black Audi badge...it was meant for this Stormtrooper to have.

  • First Audi and I love it

Over a year driving my Etron, no issues and averaging 68 mpg. Drives like a sports car and a pretty good acceleration. Highly recommend with heated seats and all the bells and whistles. I could not drive a Prius

  • Sporty, fun to drive great mpg!

The quality of the vehicle is evident when you get in the car. Solid door closing with nice seating and features. The upgraded sound system is awesome and it is now my favorite place to listen to music! Technology package features are also robust. Driving the car is fun as it is quick and really hugs the road. Looking forward to driving more with fewer stops at the gas station.

  • Great handling and seamless hybrid technology

The e-tron is a great handling hybrid. Fun and sporty to drive and you'll get anywhere from 45 to 60 mpg depending on how often you plug in. Back seat too cramped for adults.

  • Anvil solid Teutonic machine

First Audi I've owned. Purchased a Premium Plus model with Tech and Sport packages and got Red California HOV lane sticker which is good for 3.5 years. A3 etron replaced a Chevy Volt I had for 6 years (purchased 6 months before Tesla even had a model for sale?115K miles with no problems) but the California green HOV lane sticker on it expires at year end (sticker saves me ~2 hours of commute per day and $ on bridges/Lexus-lanes). Audi drive is very smooth and car is uber luxurious compared to other hybrids ? comes pretty much fully loaded. I drive with the car set to hybrid mode (combo of engine and battery) and ?comfort? setting and, despite its size, it drives like any large top German luxury car (Wife has had 3 E Benz wagons and currently drives one?and this is very similar in anvil solid feel combined with great ride + robust acceleration). Car us very quiet and zippy and has most every feature of the bigger German luxury cars. B&O stereo is great (love the noise cancelling feature) and phone integration is super intuitive. Virtual cockpit is great in that it is close to line of sight to road, and comes with all the standard safety goodies. I don?t like the charger port being up front as it is not as easy in our garage to plug in and I do worry about millennial city drivers who tend to drive-by-feel and might smash into front ($$$?) while trying to pull into/out of parking space. Overall pleasantly surprised and plan to keep it for 3 years when its red HOV sticker expires. Price point is high vis--vis the Volt or other plug in hybrids, but it really is a different level of driving experience. If you have HOV Lanes, congestion pricing, or tax breaks, this is the best thing I've driven short of an [overpriced] $130K Tesla.

  • Happy but...

Previously leased the Audi A3 2016 model and have been a happy camper but with a 2018 update comes some pluses and big minuses. Not sure when it happened but Audi has also incorporated an engine start stop feature. At a stop light the engine will down throttle or go idol until you push on the gas. There's a little pause as the engine wakes before you accelerate. Supposedly it's to save fuel but it earns them the most annoying feature award for 2018. There's no way to permanently disable the feature without warranty issues. There is a button to deactivate it but it must be pressed everytime you start the vehicle. I only found out about this after the purchase... Really lame! Had higher expectations from Audi. Not sure if they were forced into this decision or what. The other negative mark about this model is the trunk space seems smaller than my 2016. Feels like the trunk floor has been raised. One more minor change was the elimination of the collision sensor button. Was a nice to have feature you could turn on in tight spaces and tall curb situations. This years model gets some pluses. I like the design refinements to the head and rear lights, wheel design, and the cool door lighting feature that projects the Audi logo onto the ground. Despite the start stop fiasco I'm looking forward to enjoying my lease and hope Audi learns some valuable lessons for their future vehicles.

?I have only owned it for two weeks but so far am very happy with it. Comfortable and roomier than it looks. This is the second plugin hybrid I have owned and preferred the Audi.
