Vehicle Overview
It’s been said that designers are at work on the next generation of BMW’s midlevel sedan and wagon, but the launch of those models is a couple years down the line. For 2002, the Sport Premium and Convenience option packages are gone, and an in-dash CD player is newly standard. The 5 Series fits between BMW’s smaller 3 Series and its flagship 7 Series sedan.

The 5 Series’ appearance was freshened for 2001. Base models equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-six-cylinder engine are called 525i, while those fitted with a larger 3.0-liter inline-six are designated 530i. The 4.4-liter V-8 that powers the 540i sedan and wagon was given a boost this year to 290 horsepower. All 5 Series models are rear-drive, have side-impact airbags for the front seats and come with a curtain-type Head Protection System. Side-impact airbags for the rear seats are optional.

The high-performance M5 sedan, which is fitted with a 394-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 engine and a six-speed-manual gearbox, also is available. Other 5 Series models may be equipped with either a manual or automatic transmission.

Exterior
With a 111.4-inch wheelbase, the 5 Series fits into the full-size category by cars.com standards, though some observers consider it a midsize model. At 188 inches long overall, the 5 Series is slightly shorter than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and nearly 9 inches shorter than the Lexus LS 430. In appearance, the 5 Series closely resembles its smaller and larger mates, all of which sport BMW’s familiar twin-kidney grille.

Interior
Seating is provided for five occupants. Front bucket seats have 10-way power adjustment for the driver. Standard equipment on all models includes remote keyless entry, a 10-speaker audio system, a power tilt/telescoping steering column, heated power mirrors and an alarm. The 540i sedan adds such extras as a moonroof, dual-mode automatic air conditioning and xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights.

Leather upholstery is standard in the 540i and optional in the 525i and 530i, which otherwise come with standard imitation-leather seating. All models can be equipped with an optional split, folding rear seatback and BMW’s navigation system.

Under the Hood
The 525i uses a 184-hp, 2.5-liter inline-six-cylinder engine, while a 225-hp, 3.0-liter inline-six goes into the 530i. Topping the regular lineup, the 540i gets a 4.4-liter V-8 that now produces 290 hp — 8 hp more than last year’s engine. Six-cylinder models are available with either a five-speed-automatic or five-speed-manual transmission. The 540i comes with a five-speed-automatic or six-speed-manual transmission.

The 540i actually costs more when fitted with a manual shift than with the automatic, but stick-shift versions come with a Sport Package that includes 17-inch tires and a tauter suspension. All 5 Series models are rear-drive only, unlike the smaller 3 Series, which offers all-wheel drive as an option.

Safety
Dual-stage front airbags deploy according to crash severity and whether occupants are buckled up. Side-impact airbags for the front seats and BMW’s Head Protection System — which consists of curtain-type airbags that deploy to protect front-seat occupants — are standard. Side-impact airbags and head-protection curtains are optional for the rear seats. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system that BMW calls Dynamic Stability Control. The optional Park Distance Control detects obstacles to the front and rear of the car while parking it.

Driving Impressions
BMW manages to mix big doses of both sport and luxury in the 5 Series models. Drivers can expect the precise maneuverability and control of a 3 Series, coupled with quite a few luxuries near the level of the big 7 Series. Although suspensions are undeniably firm, especially if the sedan is fitted with a Sport Package, ride comfort remains pleasant over most pavement surfaces.

Performance is reasonably energetic even with the smallest six-cylinder engine, but the V-8 unleashes a veritable torrent of strength for supremely confident highway operation. BMW appears to strive for symmetry in each of its models, so the dashboard and its easy-to-read gauges look about the same, regardless of the size of the sedan.

  • One of the most reliable cars I owned

This car met all of my needs. It's reliable. Got me point A to Point B with no problems. Drives smooth especially on a hot summer day with the sun roof open or the AC blowing feeling luxurious.

  • Perfect balance between Luxury and Sport!

Fell in love with this car instantly. For being a 2002 model year, it still is very modern and it has aged well. Very comfortable ride but also sport with its inline 6 engine. BMW is known for it's unreliability but this M54 engine is bullet proof and shows it as I had the car with 200k miles. Overall a fantastic car!

  • One of the Best Ever ; But Not Perfect

What a great car. Fast cruiser on the highway. Fast but not quick; there is a difference. Build this car new in 2018 and it would definitely benefit from an 8-speed automatic. Great highway mpg. Quiet and comfortable. Soft headrests are the best, like a Rolls. Ride quality is very good. Steering feel, brakes solid body structure; you feel safe. Basic service under the hood is well thought out - better than today's models. Leather is second rate. Cupholders are flimsey. Center armrest is rock hard. I use a towel as an elbow pad. Power window mechanisms go back within 5 years. Don't touch the sunroof. Adhesive for the sunroof and a-pillar fabric gives up in 10 years if you do not park in a garage. Carpet fades from beige to pink in ten years but overall it is superior to most modern cars and there is space to replace and ordinary head unit with a brand new after-market infotainment system for around five hundred dollars. You can get a very good example for less than $5K.

  • The BMW 5 Series SportWagon is the best car ever.

It is too bad the BMW does not import the 5 Series wagon any longer. Its size is so helpful in hauling lots of things while still handling like a BMW. This car has the M Package, Cold Weather Package and Premium Sound Package making it the best handling, most comfortable, best entertaining vehicle I have owned; and I have owned Mercedes, Porsches, Volvos, and a host of American makes.

  • Feels Like an Extension of my body

I bought a 2002 525i a couple of years ago as my weekend, and drive it to and from work from time to time. Unlike Mercedes which I have owned in the past. Mercedes do offer performance, but I feel Mercedes is more known for their luxury. My 2002 BMW 525i offers the best of both worlds... high performance machine that makes the curviest back roads easy to maneuver, but BMW also offers a luxurious look as well. I also feel most Mercedes are simply for mature people in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. Meanwhile the 525i looks great, but offers high performance that makes daily driving effortlessly. I love driving my Bimmer so much I am sometimes bummed out when I arrive home, or at work because I have to climb out of her, and no longer drive. In other words, I could drive my BMW 2002 525i forever. Lastly I feel like when I am driving down the street that my bimmer is simply and extension of my body. I've had no problems with my car other then just giving her routine maintenance etc. She especially loves it when her engine has high performance Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil used. You will not be disappointed with this car, and now that my son will turn 16 soon, eventually this car will be his daily driver. One more note I love the safety features of the Bimmer, and I feel safer knowing all bimmers offer the most state of the art safety features.

  • Great Car

I like BMW in general... Very nice car, handles great, fair power for the weight and the engine size i had a 1987 325, and 2001 325, my dad have a 2010 530I, the 2002 325 handling was the best but this 2002 handle as good as the 2010

  • Loving it

I purchased my 525 after driving a. 3 series and Jetta for ten years. My new Bimmer is solid and handles well. The 3 series still handles the best but my series is roomy for my three sons and comfortable beyond belief. The ultimate driving machine is aprapos for my 2002 525i !

  • 100 k and too many problems

Had this car for 6 years. After it had 90 k plus it start having problems. Cyclone filter failure, Fuel pump failure and finally Transmission failure and a engine oil leak from valve cover gaskets. BMW rides and looks good but repair expenses were starting to add up. Decided to sell and get a Honda. I will buy another 525 but trade or sell when it gets 100k miles.
