American Classic for the 21st Century

I've owned the Challenger SRT8 for a few months. I drive it daily to work and back (25 miles each way, all highway, no traffic). Its an awesome machine and sure to someday be a great American Classic - in many ways, I believe it already is. Dodge really nailed the whole "American muscle" concept with this car. I've owned several "muscle cars" in my life - couple of Camaros (SS and Z28 models), and three Mustang GTs (my wife has a new 2011 "5.0" convertible). The Challenger SRT8 is by far my favorite. Comfortable ride, gobs of power, and handles very well - especially when one considers the size and weight of this beast. It looks aggressive, fast, and totally "bad, American style." Its crazy fast too - and I've driven a lot of fast cars over the years. One of the several roads I have available to take to work every day is a back country road through a forrest. Lots of twists, turns, no shoulder at all, elevation rises and drops regularly. The Challenger handles all that without issue at 55+ mph average. On the more refined, very straight, interstate-like highway also available for the 30-min run to the job, the Challenger is just plain fun to drive. If you can see it , you can pass it. It stops fast, changes lanes instantly when you get on the gas, and provides a good sense of stablility and control even at high speed. On the track, the new Camaro SS and 2011 Mustang 5.0 might have it by a couple tenths of a second in the quarter mile, or pull a little tighter on the skid pad in high speed, sharp turns, but as a daily driver on the treet, these minor differences in overall performance aren't even noticable - although it is quicker than our 5.0 on the low end off the line. Because we're not felons, we've not tried comparing the top end - maybe at the local track someday. "Street presence" is off the chart - this is one good looking car! Its size seems to add to the aggressive "attitude." Other drivers stare at it all the time. Roomy inside, and while pretty simple in the cabin, I prefer simple - easy to read guages and easy to use the other stuff too, so you can actually enjoy the pleasure of driving a car like this vice messing around with the various buttons on the dash when you want to switch something on, off or adjust it. Gas mileage - not the best, but who buys a car like this if gas mileage is an issue? Mine is black, and while I normally don't go for black cars because they are harder to keep clean during a week of driving, the color really suits this car (and I've learned a few tricks to keep a black car looking pretty good in between weekly washings - use one of those "California dusters" daily - surprising how well they work on black cars). Brake dust is more pronounced with the Brembos than on other cars that don't have that kind of set up, but I found some aluminum wheel cleaner by McGuiers that takes the stuff right off, to include on the inner rim very easily without any damage to the forged rims of the SRT8. The "MOPAR Bucks" incentive at the time of purchase was a pretty nice deal too - although you may have to wait a while depending on what you order - MOPAR exhausted their supply of strut tower braces by the time I bought mine, for example - but Dodge will get the parts and install them all for you eventually. I got the cold air induction (the engine runs a little cooler and gas mileage goes up a bit too - I did this on previous cars with the same effect), the strut tower brace, which improved the already great handing even more by tightening up the front end, splash guards (they salt and sand the roads where I live in the winter, so I wanted to spare the paint), and some other cosmetics (door sill plates, a few other small goodies). The only draw back I've encountered is that the car is big and sits pretty low, so you need to ensure room to park. Parking garages should be avoided, especially in metropolitan areas due to the lack of manuvering room for a big car (its as long and wide as many large pick ups and SUVs). The front spoiler sits lower than most curbs and parking blocks, so one needs to be aware of that or you could easily damage it. But, other than applying some common sense associated with the characteristics of the car, you'll definitely enjoy cruising around in a modern American classic - and have plenty of "bite" under the hood to provide plenty of "go" to match all the "show" of the Challenger SRT8.

TIME MACHINE

As of today my SRT8 is running strong and looking good. Since my last posting "TIME MACHINE" I have 2,100 miles mostly highway. Added some under the hood chrome on th ESP system, the shock dome covers and fuse box all in stainless steel 302. Still haven't changed my driving habit that much but keeping a much more father distance from cars as I do with trucks. What happened was while on the highway I heard a ping of a small pebble hitting the windshield and taught nothing much if it, as with all my vehicels. Next day cleaning the glass of bugs/splat, I noticed a small chip and one being of a few that I have been noticing, this chip has a 12 & 6 line from it, very small. I couldnt belive what I was seeing. From the size of the chip, it's so small, I rememberd the sound and now Im thinking of the few more I have, that I was thinking how soft is this glass. I have my outher vehicles, Van,truck, PLY RR, 30 to 5yrs been hit by road debrie and not as manny chips in 3 months. Well comming this monday Its gowing to be replaced with a MOPAR glass and hope all goes well. I beleive the glass surface or temper is not of the older cars had. The lines in the chip in time will start to grow, and if water were to get in there and freeze, there goes six O'clock. So my advice stay far away and then it could happen from on comming vehicles. My miles per gal.seems to have gone up, 19.2 to 20.1 using 91 to 93 oct. The P245/45/20 Run Flats are very expensive about $400.00, that I was looking to install 255 in rear that was an option package. Joined MOPAR club and at the track Rt's are at 13+ sec & SRT8 12.04sec. and I did not run my car. Outher than keeping That break dust of the inner & outer part of the rims LOVE IT. AL

TIME MACHINE

I am a chrysler guy all the way from family up. Purchased SRT8 Feb,2010 6.1L HEMI auto. owner of several dodge/plymouth preformance cars in the past and to date origional owner of a 71 plymouth R/R 383 4spd. @380 hp. I reviewed briefly the Ford & mustang but the challanger just made my heart beat. The 1970 era came back. The test drive that day I felt it had power by the thrust against the seat with a slight throttle. Stearing is tight and responsive. The suspension is stiff but comfortable. Traction and handling is like a go-cart. A two hr.best time ride to PA. took one hr. thirty five min. I know, this car can be trouble. The Navigation /blue tooth/etc. is complicated and will take time to understand. The G force / preformance/ tire psi/avg.fuel eco./temp & comp's etc. is all in one area of the speed cluster and can be distracting. Tryed the 1/8 mile preformance test showed 89.9 mph @ 5.8sec. and stopping was quick, didn't try the stopping distance recorder, to shaken up. Seats are very comfortable and hold you in turns, I feel like I'm part of the tires gripping the road. I noticed most of the time people are recoginizing the car /style and am often asked what year is it. Makes me wounder is it good or bad. my tennant calls it "the time capsule". The color is BLUE PEARL, carbon hood stripe. Front plate holder I placed ontop of the lower spoiler but under the bumper, which would of taken away from the front look of the car. Put Dodge mud flaps front rear and rotors painted same as car. Note, window's come down a 1/4" when doors are opened and back up when door are closed. This is so the window doesn't close onto the weather strip and also tucks under the strip. Problem I came against is, this brutal winter, window's were iced up and without taught, opened the door and realized window was trying to go down but couldn't. I quickly closed the door but it wouldn't close because it was closing on top of the weather strip. Scraping the ice with my fingers and helping the window down, it worked. Another is a dead batt. and car in garage (great neighbor)and batt. you know, is in trunk. Well window doesn't go down ok and no trunk lock? one month later I realize this. I Remembered at the dealer he gave a boost at the front under the hood at two terminals. Need to make sure front is accessible at all times, hood is manual. Batt. went dead due to my leaving the trunk cracked open and light doesn't go out till its locked. The one most thing that does bother me and wasn't told till after the deal was made, was that the drivers seat doesn't allow a passanger to enter the back. Access to the back is from the passanger seat. I see this as a saftey issue. I haven't seen it mentioned in any articles I read so far. It could be a trap. It's basicly my self and wife on a nice day take drives and she love the power her self. There a lot of plus's for this car,and with any there are negative's. Only 400 miles and hope a lot more to go. agreat TIME MACHINE

Dodge Challenger R/T Blue

So far so Good!!! Haven't driven to much do to snow but chose this car over the Camaro due to ride, performance, looks and reputation. Also less road noise in the challenger. More comfortable seats. Every time I looked at another car VW or what have you I just couldn't picture myself in any other vehicle except this one. Reminds me of my old Plymouth Road Runner and the old Barracuda.Telling my age now. LOL

2010 Dodge Challenger

Over all car is nice. There are some quality issues such as: The unfinished hem on the headliner near the windshield is unraveling. Plastic cover over the brake reservoir broke while removing it. The battery has gone dead 3 times on cold nights. All mass produced cars will have some issues in the beginning, so I will get these issues addressed by the dealer during the first maintenance.

Best car ever!

I just got a 2010 Black SRT8 with all the options 4 days ago. I am still breaking in the car with only 295 miles on it but I cant keep myself from wanting to drive it All The Time! Excellent power and shifting with the 6 speed manual. Push button start is easy and convienient. It even came with a Mopar cold air intake. Absolutly buetiful car and am planning to keep it for decades to come. I cant thing of and modifacations I would want to do with this car as it is pristine and performance enough!
