Fitting follow-on to the Protege
For former Protege drivers, there's little to learn. A punchier engine, better seat adjustment, and the host of safety and convenience features are improvements. Cargo space is reduced compared to the earlier Protege, as is fuel efficiency, but that's the price of the 2.3L engine's performance. The controls and feel of driving still preserve the feel of my old 1983 RX-7, and are the main reasons I keep buying Mazda's compacts. The all-season 17" rim, 50-profile tires of the Mazda3 5-door (Hatchback) Touring give acceptable performance and safety in this area's (South Carolina) occasional light snows, but more northern owners must be warned that real snow tires of this size and profile may be needed and hard to find.

Sure it looks good
Sure it looks good. But have you really sat in it? The Mazda3 is extraordinarily uncomfortable. Its got plenty of Pep going for it. And the exterior styling is fantastic in comparison to its competitors. But all of that is just superficial. The inside has a decent amount of gadgets going for it but its nothing i'd really want to deal with when the seats feel like sitting on cardboard and the back support of a coffee table. Do your research. Don't get fooled into getting a car that looks great.. it may be superficial.. In my opinion isn't the right choice.

Best value in its class
I spent about a month going over the civics, accords, corollas, lancers, etc... and I happened to stumble onto the Mazda3. I am so glad I did, because this car is well above its competition in terms of features, sportiness, and handling. This car is the picture perfect example of a car that has both style while maintaining the economical traits of an everyday driver. Two things that I do think should be improved: auto lights: On the i packages, the lights must be manually turned on... This is a standard feature on pretty much every other car in its class, so I was shocked to find that it didnt have it. Gas/brake pedals: Very cl ose together, and for someone that has a larger foot, it is a little tough to get used to the pedals; my foot tends to clip the break pedal when I switch from brake to gas. Other than those couple of minor setbacks, thecar is fantastic. The great gas milage with the sporty look and feel is amazing!

Nicest car i've owned
I'd liked to have had more options for a base model as standard equipment, but again beggers can't be choosers and Mazda3 is Cheaper than a Similarily equipped Honda Civic, although the base model civics offer remote keyless entry and mazda 3 doesnt. all around slick car to drive. Would like to be able to customize the vehicle more, including but not limited to aftermarket cd-decks and sound systems. Dont like the fact that i cannot buy bulbs for the headlights aftermarket as they arent yet in production.

Excellent value
In light of the low price, can't get a better value for the dollar. Sure the door panels don't make a solid thud when closed. Sure the carpet is thin. Sure the road noise is loud. But I was buying an economy car, and as far as economy cars, this is one of the better engineered cars I've driven. The clutch is smooth (I bought their manual transmission model). Acceleration is there. The gas mileage is impressive for the oompf you get. The crash rating is above average, and all the 'good' features are part of the base package (No need to spend extra thousands for something as basic as split rear seats). The interior and exterior styling is a bit young for me, but apart from that I'd recommend this car to anyone. It has all the features that I would want in a commuter car: CD, height adjustable seats, tilt and distance adjustable steering wheel, side air bags, remote door locks and cabin airfilter. Value, safety and economy are the words I would use to describe this car.

Mazda amps up the fun factor
This is the most fun car to drive for the money that I think you can own. Corners on a dime, great shifting manual transmission, great gas mileage (when I don't have a heavy right foot), and room for lots of cargo. I love the exterior styling with the muscular fender bulges and aerodynamic lines. At night the dash looks like a jet cockpit. My only complaint is it does not do well on snow and ice. All wheel drive would make it a perfect car for the dollar spent.
