Vehicle Overview
Mercedes-Benz is notorious for introducing high-performance AMG editions of its passenger cars, and the CL-Class is no exception. A supercharged V-8 became available in the CL55 AMG for 2003. Mercedes-Benz is offering an even hotter CL65 AMG with a 604-horsepower twin-turbo V-12 for the 2005 model year.

Equipped with Active Body Control and special AMG spring struts with firmer damping, the CL65 AMG is one of four versions of the rear-wheel-drive CL-Class. The CL-Class is a two-door equivalent to the German automaker’s high-end S-Class sedan.

For 2004, the CL500 got a seven-speed-automatic transmission, which replaced the prior five-speed unit. A DVD navigation system and MP3 player were added, and 18-inch wheels could be installed. Options include Distronic Adaptive Cruise Control, which adjusts speed automatically to maintain a preset distance behind the vehicle ahead.

Exterior
The coupe’s styling themes echo the appearance of the S-Class sedan. Flowing fenders, four oval headlights, a wraparound back window and a smaller sloped grille that displays the familiar three-pointed-star emblem help give the CL-Class a personality all its own. Befitting its lofty-performance status, the CL55 AMG coupe has aerodynamic body trim, a firmer suspension and 18-inch wheels. The new CL65 AMG features high-performance brakes and rolls on 19-inch twin-spoke wheels.

All CL-Class coupes have Active Body Control, which is an active suspension system that continuously adjusts firmness to eliminate body roll and pitch during cornering, acceleration and braking. Xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights include washers. A power moonroof is standard.

Interior
The CL-Class accommodates up to four occupants and has bucketlike rear seats. The CL600 has unique Nappa leather upholstery and either burl walnut or chestnut interior trim.

A standard satellite-based navigation system has a touchscreen integrated into the dashboard. An SOS button for automatic emergency calling is tied to the Tele Aid system. A Bose audio system is installed.

Under the Hood
Four engines are available. A 302-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 goes into the CL500. The CL600 employs a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-12 that generates 493 hp and 590 pounds-feet of torque. A 493-hp, supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 powers the CL55 AMG, and the new CL65 AMG holds a 604-hp, twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 that generates a whopping 738 pounds-feet of torque. The CL500 has a seven-speed-automatic transmission with Touch Shift manual control. Other models have a five-speed-automatic transmission that permits manually selected gear changes. The CL55 AMG and CL65 AMG are equipped with a SpeedShift provision.

Safety
Door-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats, side curtain-type airbags that deploy from above the side windows, and side-impact airbags that protect the torsos of backseat occupants are standard. The front passenger’s airbag deploys at one of two levels. Antilock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system are standard.

I have owned several Mercedes in the past. The CL600 is truly a European Supercar. Driving it brings resources to your fingertips and feet that simply do not exist in most other cars.

  • stupid fast but very heavy

My cl 55 amg is a 2004 with 62,000 miles on it. I have done fuel system upgrades, cooling upgrades, ECU STAGE 3 upgrade, and methanol injection. I got rid of the rediculously expensive to repair ABC suspension and went with adjustable coilovers. The car is stupid fast and incredibly heavy, so the huge AMG brakes and the new Michelin 4s tires are the only thing keeping me alive so far. Incedibly beautiful 16 mpg car, but the physics of weight (4500 lbs.) and high speed will bite you if you aren't a skilled driver. Do not be overconfident in your abilities with this car. It is a beast. But, BUY ONE !!!!! NOW!!!

  • Collector Car

This model will be a collector car. When you drive down the road you get respect and jelousy. Sometimes being a Mercedes it will fascinate lunatic manic personality traits in other vehichles. Overall the hydraulic pump for the ABC is 2800cdn installed and the struts are 875.00 aftermarket cdn. You do the math.. 8k to completely redo your suspension or buy this super cruiser for 15k and put 8k into it, way less than the depreciation on any car. Most American cars lose 40 percent of initial value after a couple years and are rusted. My car has no rust, no depreciation and just requires patience. The CL being an S class is also one of the safest cars on the planet to drive. In a catastrophic accident the engine and transmission are designed to break away from the car at over 150mph. Top speed is 260kmh and they all will do it effertlessly.

  • 2005 Mercedes cl55 amg

This car is just about the best buy available at the present time. The combination of performance, elegance, handling and braking is INTOXICATING! You only need to drive one to understand. As with any car you need to do your homework and cars.com is one of many resources available. Also I HIGHLY recommend having ANY high end performance vehicle checked by a dealership so you know where you stand. Silver State Imports in Raleigh NC was most helpful in helping me with this and I recommend it and them. It will cost you $150.00 to $200.00 (more or less) but its money well spent on a used high performance luxury automobile.

  • 2005 Mercedes CL 65 AMG

I ended up purchasing a 2005 Mercedes CL 65 AMG. I never imagined myself owning a Mercedes but I am loving this car. It is a flat out rocket ship! Has great comfort, handling and space. The audio system is a little dated (has no aux input). Parts and maintance are crazy expensive for this car so if you don't have a warranty find a good independent mechanic or get ready to turn some wrenches yourself. All in all an awesome car and there are some GREAT deals to be had out there. -LeoD

  • Near perfection

This car is simply AMAZING. I could write a book about the joy that it has been to own one. I did not give it five stars on reoiability becaust a car that costs barely this side of 200 Grand and it as meticuously maintaned as mine, should never have anything go wrong it even if when it seldom does, you are nor fully stranded. And to make marrres worse, the repairs and/or replacement parts cost as much as those of a space shuttle. Alsp, beware of the dealers; you would thimk differently but they more often than mot treat you with arrogance and as if to you, money means nothing. Find a trustworthy independent garage; you will be a much happier owner. The cars are luxury to the max, but don't scream "look at me; I am cool". And the performance...undescribable! Particularly when it weighs more than 5000 lbs. If you buy used, beware; DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!

  • Excellent

This is one of the best cars I have ever owned. It has poise, power and reliability with enough toys to keep the most bored driver out of mischief. Petrol costs are extortionate - but the performance makes every penny woth it. The party piece is winding down all the windows. No B pillar makes it completely open.

  • CL65 is amazing!!!

Huge power! Huge torque! Total comfort! This is the real ultimate cruise mobile. The Mercedes quality is hard to beat especially for an every day driver like the CL65. I sold the CL55 to get this and think this is twice the car as the CL55.
