Vehicle Overview
Mitsubishi released retooled versions of its popular Eclipse sport coupe as early 2003 models, and the Eclipse Spyder convertible earned comparable treatment. The restyling was moderate in scope, but the new urethane front fascia borrowed heavily from Mitsubishi’s SST concept vehicle. A new GTS model joined the base RS, midrange GS and performance-oriented GT coupes in the 2003 lineup.

The RS has been dropped for 2005. A new optional Remix package for the GS model includes top-stitch charcoal leather front seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a six-speaker 210-watt audio system with a six-CD changer.

A redesigned Eclipse is expected as a 2006 model. Eclipse coupes and Spyder convertibles are built in Normal, Ill.
(Skip to details on the: Eclipse Spyder Convertible)

Exterior
Other than front-end modifications in 2003, the current Eclipse’s overall appearance is similar to the 2000 – 2002 models. Composite taillights use three lamps behind clear lenses. Finned-spoke 17-inch wheels go on GT and GTS models, while the GS gets 16-inch aluminum wheels.

All coupes ride a 100.8-inch wheelbase, stand 51.6 inches tall and measure 176.8 inches long overall. A rear spoiler is installed on all models, and the GT and GTS coupes get integrated fog lamps.

Interior
The Eclipse coupe seats up to four occupants, but the backseat is tight for adults. Cargo space totals 16.9 cubic feet.

All models have air conditioning, power windows and locks, cruise control, remote keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and 50/50-split folding rear seatbacks. The GT adds steering-wheel audio controls, a 210-watt CD stereo and premium sport fabric upholstery. The GTS features leather front seating surfaces and a 210-watt stereo with a six-CD changer.

Under the Hood
A 2.4-liter four-cylinder in the GS coupe produces 147 horsepower when connected to a five-speed-manual transmission and 142 hp when teamed with the optional four-speed automatic. The 3.0-liter V-6 in the GT coupe makes 200 hp and 205 pounds-feet of torque. The V-6 in the GTS coupe has variable induction, which boosts output to 210 hp. The Eclipse’s available four-speed automatic has a separate gate to permit manual gear changes.

Safety
Side-impact airbags and antilock brakes are included in the GTS coupe. These features are not offered on other coupe trim levels.

Driving Impressions
The GTS coupe does its job well, but it comes across as a little lifeless compared with Eclipses of the past almost like it’s been toned down too much. The GTS handles capably and is easy to drive, but it doesn’t feel as sporty as it looks. It corners crisply, steers with a satisfying level of precision and feels light on its feet.

Ride quality is great on smooth roads, and most bumps aren’t that bothersome. Acceleration from a standstill and when passing is excellent, and the automatic transmission shifts smoothly when left to its own devices. The seats are highly supportive but lack side bolstering. The rear spoiler impairs rearward visibility.

Eclipse Spyder Convertible
A GTS edition joined the GS and performance-oriented GT Spyder convertibles in 2003. Mitsubishi describes the GTS as “the most potent, performance-ready, fun-brokering Spyder to date.” Both the GT and GTS convertibles use a 210-hp, 3.0-liter V-6, while the GS continues with four-cylinder power.

Little has changed for 2005 other than three new body colors and the addition of a Remix option group (like the one offered for the Eclipse coupe) for the GS convertible. All convertibles have air conditioning, a 210-watt CD stereo, power windows and locks, cruise control, remote keyless entry and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Back to top

  • I ABSOLUTELY Love It !!!!!!

I purchased my 2005 Eclipse GT brand new! I have had Camaros , Firebirds , Trans Ams & NOTHING beats my Eclipse GT . Best car for my money . It’s 2020 & I have only 67,548 miles on it . I call him “BON JOVI “ , I baby him , keep clean inside & out . Keep up on oil changes , brakes , tune up. Only issue was a oxygen scensor like 6 years ago & now my heat shield on the Catolytor Converter rusted & bottom have hanging it blew . Other than that I have No Complaints. Dealer tries to sell me the NEW Models , I don’t like them . 2005 was the last year of this Style & I will keep it till I’m gone .

  • Most Affordable, Reliable, Fun, Sports Car

This is the first car that I learned stick shift on. It is by far my favorite car I have driven. The gts trim has great features!!! I was very excited when I found the eclipse is the gts model for well under the blue book value. After seeing it in person and test driving it, I knew I had to get this car. I was looking at some other sports cars such as the ford mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. But the eclipse beat the following two in price, reliability, and quality. I have driven 1500 miles on my eclipse so far, and you can not separate me from it! The 3.0 gts engine puts out 210hp which definitely gives this car punch, since its a such light car. The sunroof is standard among all the trims. The leather seats are very nice. It is a compact sports car so it fits easily in any parking space. I love taking off in this car. Even with the stock exhaust, it has such a nice purring sound. The 3rd gen Eclipse has such unique exterior styling, it is beautiful. I would definitely recommend this car to anybody who wants an affordable, reliable, fun car to drive. When the Mitsubishi Eclipse is compared to any other car in its class, it can not be beat.

  • great car overall

I owned a 2000 Eclipse GT, 3.0 V6. had 137k when i got it and handled and ran like a dream. Smoked a few mustang gt's, especially on curvy roads. 90mph s-turns are no problem. Never squeeled a tire. Also, it does amazing in the snow. Drove over WV mountains with 4-6 inches of ice under the tires and didn't have a problem. Smooth shifting with the 5-speed manual, put a cold air intake, exhaust kit, and cheapo perf. ship under the hood and it shot from 200hp to 250 hp. And did so with under 1000 bucks. Srove it around 199 miles a day. only complaint is, as to be expected, at 170k miles, the radiator blew and needed replaced. But, the car fortunatley has very low maintenance costs. I deffinatley recommend.

  • Steal!!!!

I got it way under book and it more than fulfilled all all my expectations. My only complaints are petty, like I wish it were another color, and are probably why I got that super deal. My other complaint is that is so great my brothers use any excuse to borrow it.

  • Love My Car!

I have the 2003 Eclipse GS. Never had a problem with Reliability. Now that's not saying that it won't happen but we've had this car since 2006 and I've never had a problem. Handles like a dream. Still performs like it did when we got it three years ago.

  • My Eclipse should be yellow, it's a LEMON

This is my second Eclipse and needless to say I'm very disappointed in it. My first Eclipse was a 2001 (leased) and the ONLY thing I had to pay for other than oil changes was one set of tires, I loved it. Skip head four years later and I leased my second Eclipse, a Remix Edition. After four and a half years and over $2000 in "non-warranty parts" I will NEVER purchase another Mitsubishi. Within the first week it was in the shop twice. Within the 14 months, it was in for a check engine light issue (the air filter) and brake issues (not covered after 12 months or 12,000 miles). Next on the list, tires which I knew I had to pay for. The tires that originally come on the Eclipse are only suppose to last 15-20,000 miles. I had issues with the cooling system, the radiator was replace (semi under warranty), all the hoses, antifreeze, cooling system flush, thermostat all needed to be replaced. That was expensive to fix. More issues with the breaks (not covered), other issues with the stereo controls on the steering wheel. Battery that failed after 3 years, sensors that needed adjustment, and a very loose parking brake. All not covered. Tomorrow I take it back in for the 3rd time this year for another check engine light issue, a tune-up, oil change and who knows what the damage will be. I think this car should be bought back and I can be free of it.
