Mitsubishi Eclipse

The Eclipse’s 2006 redesign gave it a dramatically arched roofline and bulbous rear quarters. Under the hood was a 163-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder or 263-hp, 3.8-liter V-6. A Spyder convertible version was reintroduced for 2007. Updates for 2009 included a new dual exhaust system that boosted the V-6’s output to 265 hp, as well as standard stability control, larger rear disc brakes, high-intensity-discharge headlights and a mild face-lift. The Eclipse continued on with only minor changes through the 2012 model year, when Mitsubishi discontinued the long-running sports coupe. The Eclipse’s legacy would eventually be partially carried on by the Eclipse Cross crossover, which debuted for 2018.

The Eclipse was redesigned for 2000 on a longer, wider platform shared with Mitsubishi’s Galant sedan. The rounded styling of the previous generation was replaced by a heavier, more streamlined look, with unusual depressed strakes stamped into the doors. Under the hood were noteworthy powertrain changes; all-wheel drive was no longer offered, and the previous turbocharged four-cylinder was replaced by a 205-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6. A convertible Eclipse Spyder variant was reintroduced as an early 2001 model, and a higher-performance GTS trim arrived for 2003.

A redesigned Eclipse debuted for the 1995 model year with curvaceous new bodywork and new technology features. It was a bit larger than the previous-generation Eclipse, with a longer wheelbase and a wider track, but backseat space remained limited. Mitsubishi offered the 1995 Eclipse in a variety of models, including the base RS, mid-level GS, turbocharged GS-T and all-wheel-drive turbo GSX. A Spyder convertible version was added for 1996. 

The first-generation Eclipse debuted for the 1990 model year. It was available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations; engine options included a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that made up to 195 horsepower. The 1992 model year brought a styling face-lift that included integrated headlights in place of the previous pop-up units.
