Expert 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer review

Vehicle Overview
The compact Mitsubishi Lancer wasn’t developed as an economy car. Instead, the four-door front-wheel-drive sedan had a competition background that evolved from the Lancer Evolution World Rally Car. Mitsubishi also offers a high-performance Lancer Evolution that’s listed separately in the cars.com Research section.

Three versions are offered. Base ES and O-Z Rally models use a 120-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while the Ralliart sedan is equipped with a sport-tuned suspension and a larger four-cylinder rated at 162 hp.

For the 2006 model year, all Lancers get an updated front fascia and interior enhancements. A black mesh grille is now installed on O-Z Rally and Ralliart models, while the ES has a chrome grille. Daytime running lights are now standard. A Security Package for ES and O-Z Rally models includes antilock brakes and side-impact airbags for the front seats.

Exterior
The Lancer’s cab-forward profile incorporates a high roofline on a comparatively long, 102.4-inch wheelbase. Aerodynamic wraparound headlights have a multireflector surface, and the front bumper has a large opening. Ralliart sedans have unique fog lamps.

A four-wheel-independent suspension uses front struts and a rear multilink configuration. The Lancer ES and O-Z Rally editions have 15-inch tires while Ralliart sedans ride on 16-inch rubber.

Interior
Up to five occupants can fit inside the Lancer. A low instrument panel and belt line aid visibility, and a high hip point for the seats should ensure easier entry and exit. A new four-spoke steering wheel is installed for 2006. The ES has air conditioning, a 140-watt CD stereo, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Extras on the O-Z Rally include a sport-touch steering wheel and white-faced gauges.

Under the Hood
Mitsubishi’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder develops 120 hp and 130 pounds-feet of torque. A 162-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder goes into the Ralliart sedan. Each engine teams with a standard five-speed-manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic.

Safety
Side-impact airbags for the front seats and antilock brakes are optional on ES and O-Z Rally models and standard on Ralliart sedans.

Driving Impressions
Even when fitted with sporty details, the Lancer fails to stand out in its class. Despite its motorsports heritage, the manual-gearshift O-Z Rally edition lacks the secure confidence of a sport sedan. Still, it’s wholly adequate and satisfying as a small family car.

Acceleration is peppy when pushed hard. Some engine buzz is noticeable, but the Lancer is as quiet as most four-cylinder-powered cars. Even though the clutch operates adeptly, it lacks sufficiently smooth engagement.

Handling is adequate. The Lancer corners easily, but some drivers may prefer more tenacity in turns. Choppiness is minimal but not absent.

The front seats are firm and provide ample space. The gauges are easy to see in the daytime but aren’t bright enough at night. Rear-seat headroom is adequate, but legroom and foot space are terrific.

  • One of my best decisions.

Bought one 4 years ago, very reliable. Not over-computerized, the only "smart" feature is the ABS, therefore you can enjoy the real driving. Exceptional steering capabilities, replace parts are not expensive. However I am the 3rd owner, the manufacturer reached me via the government for a recall which I highly appreciate.

  • Not My First Choice

I needed a car to drive to work ar night. Eventually, I ended up drivivg TX to OH, and had no problems along the way. This was not my first choice or even the second. It was all I could afford when I purchased it, used in 2010. It is comfortable, reliable, and great on gas. I don't even remember what my first choices were, but am delighted to this day, that my Baby never fails me, even now in 2020.

  • A real bullet-proof reliability. Low maintenance a

I bought this car used a couple of years ago. It is a 2006 Ralliart with 5 speeds manual. The car now has 165K miles on it. It is funs, fast, and reliable. Its exterior design is still looking good after 13 yrs. I would not trade it in for a newer corolla or a civic with 5 years newer. Fuel economy is relatively low at 27-28mpg highway and 22-23mpg local. Everything about this Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart is perfectly designed at least to the eyes of the beholder.

  • Still works great after 179K

I bought a second Mitsubishi Lancer to update my old one. I was so happy with this car that I wanted to continue owning one. I still own my 2006 only because it woks so good compared to its market value. I could never buy another car in such great condition for what I can get from it if I sell it... Still runs great even at 179 K.

  • A sweet and fun little car that I enjoy driving!

This is the second Mitsubishi I bought in my life. The first was an Eclipse, and I absolutely loved that car! Forward years later...I just purchased a used '06 Mitsubishi Lancer. My Mitsubishi Lancer is so sweet and unassuming, but when I push the gas pedal she just GOES! It make me chuckle every time I drive because you just do not expect that from a little car like this--hence the sweet/ fun personality I feel this car has! This is definitely an economy car (not a bad thing at all), but I feel I have some style and substance when I drive it to work or around town. A tight ride. So proud of my little '06 Mitsubishi Lancer that gives me the connection and satisfaction we all want to feel when driving a beloved vehicle!

  • Great car

This is a great car. I bought one of these brand new back in 2006 as my first car. It was a reliable vehicle. I averaged about 32-32 mpg (that's over 300 miles on a $20 tank of fuel!!) It is very comfortable, and roomy. My only complaint is the suspension. This vehicle has a fair amount of body roll, it tend to feel like its floating on the road. I put about 320,000 miles on this vehicle before the transmission gave out. I had my first car for over 10 years! Never gace me a problem. It was hard to say goodbye. Just keep the oil, spark plugs, and timing belt changed and this car will treat you well.

  • Fabulous Fourth

I was very excited to drive home my new 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer. I was surprised how much get up and go it has. The Interior is in perfect shape, like it just came out of the dealership for the first time. This car is just right for me.

  • Great car

I bought my Lancer SE new in 2006 and it was a great buy. At 71,000 miles I have replaced tires, brakes, windshield wipers, and one headlight bulb, other than that it has seen only regular maintenance. Absolutely the best car I've ever owned (I had a 1993 Honda Civic which was the previous #1). Interior quality is first rate. I love the Alcantara seats, they look great and are very comfortable. All the controls are well placed and easy to use. Handling is great, acceleration is adequate, and mileage is good. I recommend Mitsubishi cars to anyone looking for quality and reliability.

  • One of the most reliable cars I've owned

I've owned my 2006 Lancer ES for about 3 years. I bought it brand new and it hasn't given me any problems. This car is very reliable, but the fact that it doesn't have ABS concerns me. For day to day driving, this car is an exceptional choice. However, there is too much body roll on the highway, and comfort doesn't last on long highway trips. One thing I don't like about the ES trim is it's lack of some features, like an alarm system, keyless entry with a panic buttonm heated side mirrors, and no backseat headrests. Lancer has a nice design and is easy to handle. Overall, I think Lancer is a car worthy of consideration.
