Expert 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

The Lancer competes against other small sedans like the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Mazda3, and there’s a high-performance Ralliart trim level.

The Lancer Ralliart bears some resemblance to the high-power Lancer Evolution and features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, Mitsubishi’s twin-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. The Lancer Evolution and the Lancer Sportback, a five-door hatchback, are covered in separate reports in the Cars.com Research section.

New for 2011
The Lancer’s four-cylinder engines are more efficient for 2011, Mitsubishi says, partly because the DE and ES models gain electric power steering that reduces drag on the engine. EPA ratings on the 2.0-liter engine in the DE and ES are up 2-3 mpg, depending on transmission. A USB port and voice-activated operation of phones, iPods and USB drives are now standard on the GTS and Ralliart and optional on the ES.

Exterior
A forward-leaning grille serves as the focal point for the front of the car. The Ralliart version is more aggressive, with a gaping front grille and a subtle hood scoop. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 16-inch wheels
  • 18-inch wheels optional
  • Optional rear wing-style spoiler
  • Optional rocker-panel extensions

Interior
The Lancer sedan seats up to five and is available with an optional 60/40-split folding rear seat. A CD stereo is standard, and an optional Navigation and Technology Package includes a navigation system with a 30-gigabyte hard drive and keyless entry. Air conditioning is optional for the base DE Lancer. Interior features include:

  • Odor-absorbing headliner
  • USB port (standard on GTS and Ralliart, optional on ES)
  • Optional chrome accents
  • Optional heated leather seats
  • Optional rain-sensing wipers
  • Optional sound-deadening windshield glass

Under the Hood
The Lancer is available with a variety of engine and transmission choices. The Ralliart has all-wheel drive, and other Lancer sedans come with front-wheel drive. Mechanical features include:

  • 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine on DE and ES makes 152 horsepower (143 hp in California) with either a standard five-speed manual or optional (ES) continuously variable automatic transmission
  • GTS has a 168-hp (161 in California), 2.4-liter four-cylinder with either a five-speed manual or CVT
  • Ralliart models get a 237-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 253 pounds-feet of torque and is matched to a six-speed, twin-clutch automated manual transmission

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Side-impact airbags for the front seats
  • Side curtain airbags for both rows
  • Knee airbag for the driver
  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system

  • Great Car, buy it and drive it. Turn key car.

2010 Lancer GTS 2.4 CVT. I changed spark plugs and coils, which gave it a lot more power. Does roughly 30 mpg even around town. 41k miles on it now and seems to run great. ABS ASC sensors do get dirty fairly quickly on these cars. Power wash inside of wheels every so often takes care of that problem. 61 yrs old and I love the car and enjoy driving it. I run the xxxx out of it!

  • It's a very nice car!

It's a simple car to figure out. There are little bits a features found all around the car that make driving simpler and more fun. One gripe I do have is that the AUX plugin is AUX to RCA, it isn't hard to find it's just a bit odd. Good fuel economy especially when you're on the highway , up to 430 miles on a full tank of gas. Everyone I've run into loves the look of the car. Even though I'm 6' 2" I can still fit in the car and it's comfortable, Just the steering wheel doesn't come in and out it only goes up and down so it's harder to find a comfortable position for the steering wheel sometimes. People also say it's a pretty comfortable car even though legroom is a bit scarse in the back seats but it doesn't seem people are uncomfortable. 128,000 miles and still going strong.

  • Junk cRs

Had the car for three years. Loved it at first but then noticed that it wasn?t a good as I thought. With 40 thousand miles on it the clutch went then again at 60 after that I put in a after market clutch and it was good again. With hundreds of horrible story on forums and pages of how thee car have shot clutches Mitsubishi did nothing to try and make it right. I spent countless hours on the phone just to be talked to like I was a xxxxxxx. The area manager for New England is a joke with horrible people skills. Finally after months of xxxxxxxx the service manager at Mitsubishi gave me 250 off my next service. Thanks I only just spent almost 4000 in six months on faulty xxxx. I would not recommend this car

  • 7 years

I have owned my 2011 Lancer for over 7 years now! Never had any major problems just a few recalls here and there. I had my transmission oil changed from a local machanic shop and transmission started over heating. I took my Lancer to the dealership to have it changed after that and haven't had the problem since and that was about 3 years ago. Dealership is pricy but I guess it is worth it in the long run. Also when I first purchased I had problems with the air conditioner but my warranty took care of that. Overall I have enjoyed my lancer. Performance could be a little better along with interior design which seems very cheap to me.

  • Great sporty sedan

The car drove great for may years, soft comfortable inside with paddle shifters and Automatic manual transmission, great gas mileage, reliable and roomy, the trunk was much bigger than expected and back seats drop to create even more room. highly recommend.

  • By its looks, it should have more performance

I was drawn more into it's exterior design, but unfortunately hadn't really done my research regarding the performance. It's a pretty reliable good choice for a guy in his early to mid 20's before life gets too real. Fuel economy is surprisingly good.
