Vehicle Overview
Pontiac introduced the sporty midsize front-wheel-drive G6 sedan for 2005, aiming it at the Mazda6, Mitsubishi Galant and Nissan Altima. Coupe and retractable-hardtop convertible body styles joined the lineup for 2006. For 2008, a GXP high-performance trim, available as a coupe or sedan, has been added to the lineup. It replaces the GTP model.

The G6 has multiple engine choices for 2008, including a 3.6-liter V-6 for GXP models. Exclusively teamed with this engine is a six-speed automatic transmission. Other changes for 2008 include newly standard seat-mounted side-impact airbags, standard antilock brakes and traction control on all models.

Exterior
Displaying a wedge-shaped profile, the G6 sedan has wraparound headlights and triangular wraparound taillamps. Built on a 112.3-inch wheelbase, each body style has short overhangs, measures 189 inches long overall and is 70.6 inches wide. Pontiac’s signature twin-port grille has chrome accents and mesh inserts. Pushed-forward A-pillars give the windshield a sharper rake. The coupe and retractable-hardtop convertible look similar to the sedan, but the doors are 6 inches longer and the rear ends differ.

The G6 uses a sport-tuned fully independent suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars. Three wheel sizes are available: standard 16-inchers for the base sedan, 17-inchers for GT models and 18-inchers for GXP editions. Three new colors are available, including Cranberry Metallic, Midnight Blue Metallic and White Diamond Tricoat.

GXP models receive redesigned front and rear faces with new rocker moldings, dual-exiting exhaust and polished stainless steel grille outlines. A Street Edition adds dual hood scoops and a unique rear spoiler to the GXP.

Interior
Like other Pontiac models, the G6 cockpit contains sporty controls and racing-style gauges with red LED backlighting. The coupe and retractable-hardtop models have seating for four, but the sedan can seat up to five. Brushed metal accents and chrome trim decorate the interior. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel is standard, and adjustable pedals are optional.

Due to its relatively long wheelbase, the G6 sedan promises abundant backseat legroom. The sedan’s trunk measures 14 cubic feet — the coupe’s and convertible’s are slightly smaller at 12 and 12.6 cubic feet, respectively, but the convertible’s drops to 2.2 cubic feet when the top is down.

Under the Hood
The base sedan holds a 164-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder, while GXP editions feature a 252-hp, 3.6-liter V-6. A 219-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 goes into GT models, and convertibles can be equipped with a 222-hp, 3.9-liter V-6. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard in base and GT models, and GXP models have a six-speed automatic.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes and traction control are now standard on all models. An electronic stability system is optional on GT models and standard on GXP sedans and coupes. Side curtain and side-impact airbags are now standard in coupes and sedans.

Driving Impressions
With the 3.5-liter V-6 and automatic, the G6 sedan performs well enough, aided by mannerly automatic transmission operation. Though it’s an improvement over the Grand Am, the G6 isn’t a big step forward.

Handling is on the ordinary side, and substantial steering effort is required. The G6 is quiet and rides comfortably most of the time. Monsoon radio controls are confusing. Rear legroom in the sedan is good, but headroom is horrible.

  • I’m a bragging past owner of a 2006 G6 Gypsy sedan.

I’m a bragging past owner of a 2006 G6 Gypsy sedan. First owner up to around 37,000 miles. Great experience & performance! Only issue that aggravated me was the key release from the ignition “ which was repeatedly repaired & never solved?” My model was the rare 6 speed manual “ yes in a sedan!!!!” The manual had to be in a certain precise position to trigger the ignition key release. I joked with GM service department that apparently the car wanted to keep driving?! The only other service I can remember was the leather seat cover replaced because the color wore away. & a suspension part up front. Everything covered by factory no arguments. I’m extremely serious that this is one General Motors hidden past gems!!!! “ keep in mind I am NOT talking base entry level model here.” Everyone knows about the G8 the solstice which is understandably justified! However these G6 GTP & GXP are the best investment for the budget minded to get performance in a competitive fun driving sedan with luggage & storage space!” Unless you’re smart enough to purchase the HARDTOP metal roof convertible!” Do your self & your wallet a favor & don’t ignore the vehicle when looking!

  • DO NOT BUY NOT WORTH IT

i bought the car with 80,000 miles the second day of driving which was a 2.5 mile drive to my girlfriends the power steering rack and the pump blew up. i repaired it 4 times before the issue was resolved. Over 1,000 dollars each time also and then when i hit 100,000 miles it decided to leak out all of its oil an blow up my crankshaft to the point i poured oil in and it literally leaked all out immediately. STEER CLEAR OF THIS CAR.

  • Terrible car!!!

Terrible car!!! Had less than a year and had some weird stuff with the power steering and transmisson going on . when the car would die and left what we called the trail. About 50 feet of brown sludge and then had to tow it away. Finally gave up on it.

  • Workhorse!

We have a 2008 G6 Sedan. It was our family car, then my daily work car, now my daughter drives it to work. 257,000 miles on it and still going strong. Regular oil changes and routine maintenance. GREAT car!

  • Best little beater that keeps on kicking.

This car saved my life. First off I understand there are some issues, however they have been minor in the grand skim like the blinkers have to be held on. The tire barrings needed adjustment. But, considering that I got this car with over a 10000 miles on it and it had been in a accident prior it still preformed amazing! I love this car don't to its core, reliable even on cold days, good steering that makes me feel in control of the car. Not to tight or like a boat. The radio sound is great. The get up and go power is overall good nothing too impressive compared to other sports cars like my brothers impala. But, there is just something about this car that is special. The seats are comfortable years later, the doors are soft close as in you don't have to slam them. (And it takes a beating and keeps going!). I got in a car crash on black ice and hit the railing. This car doesn't seam it but it was sturdy enough to keep me from any harm. Everyone said it should be totalled out because of it shifted frame, lost both bumpers, the body was a mess. But I loved this car so much that I couldnt let her go!! so, I decided to keep it instead of totalling it out. And that was because the engine still ran great! Even when the battery was literally tied into the engine so it wouldnt fall out. Maybe I have a strong personal bound to this car beause now i still love it even with no horn, the doors locks are messed up on the drivers side, the ac unit got smashed. The emergency lights dont work. Yet after 7 years the only regret is that I didn't take better care of her or fix her up more after the accident. This is a great little car and still driving and kicking with a little more character than before. Hands down best car I've ever had.

  • 2008 G6 GT Convertible 3.9

I found this car on a BMW dealership's used car lot in 2018. I fell in love with it at first site. The car was in immaculate condition and was priced fairly reasonably at $8,900.00. I just got my first VA disability check and was able to purchase it with no credit. I am always proud to drive this car. It is a hardtop convertible. It is sporty but not a sports car. It gets horrible gas mileage as I primarily do city driving and have averaged just about 15 mpg. But I own it now and KBB is supposedly just $2250.00. I don't think you'll find one in this condition (as of this writing Jan 21) for less than 8500. Rightly so because it is a hardtop convertible. At about 89,000 the tonneau cover covering the whole behind the headrests blew off and I continued operating the top for some time. This further damaged the top and mechanism forcing me to have to replace the whole assembly. Fortunately I found a dealer in Clearwater (Autonation Chevy) who was competent and did an outstanding job. So for $1,500.00 I repaired my top on my $2300.00 car and I love it again. Only problem is tire pressure warning system. I also had to replace the thermostat in the engine ($250.00) and bought new performance brakes and rotors on Amazon and had those installed total price $300.00. And I still love it. It is the prettiest car in my parking lot and I always get complements on it whenever I stop at Sams club for gas. It is quick enough but as all the original reviewers put it, it is a family car whose top can come down. It has stood up to at least 6 grueling Florida seasons three of them in front of my condo exposed to the elements and no problems. I currently have just shy of 94,000 miles on it and wouldn't dream of replacing it any time soon because anything else would cost three or four times as much for the same value. And I didn't mention the Monsoon sound system which is amazing. I use my phone with a bluetooth dongle and quite simply the sound system sounds better than any other car in 30 to 40 k price range (I have tried premium sound systems in the Hyundai Genesis and Kia products) , the Mustang and a few others and quite simply this machine has an amazing sound system. Even though the FM radio stopped working a year ago, Spotify and Sirius XM always rock and that Bluetooth dongle does the trick and notably most phones now have Dolby Atmos which works with the Bluetooth dongle so no reason to get a new car just so you can get an infotainment system which will be obsolete in three years. Only thing now is to upgrade the interior a bit and perhaps some touchup paint on the hood and rear deck lid - seeing as how I've had a mechanical carwash membership for the car for about 2 1/2 years and it has been washed every other day that entire time.... just goes to show how much I love this car.

  • Unsafe vehicle

This vehicle has so many serious problems. Electric power steering recall. Had it fixed. As I was driving it 1 year ago as I was turning the electric power steering completely went out. I was lucky to have been going slow as I turned. It locked up completely and was not able to turn. No warning of this was shown prior. Shortly after it locked up it finally read check power steering. I have not drove this vehicle since. It has been sitting in our driveway ever since. I would love to sale this vehicle due to it being so unsafe to drive but I won’t sell it due to that same reason. I wish I would have known more about this vehicle prior to buying. It’s a death trap in my honest opinion. Horrible, horrible vehicle.
