Vehicle Overview

The 9-3 is positioned as Saab’s entry-level sedan, and it competes with the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Volvo S60. The 9-3 is available as a convertible, SportCombi (or wagon), sedan and a more-rugged wagon called the 9-3x. All models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Saab is now owned by Spyker Cars, a Dutch carmaker that acquired the Swedish brand from General Motors. The current 9-3 was developed under GM’s ownership, so it still uses GM engines and other major components. Saab says a redesigned 9-3 is due for the 2012 or 2013 model year that will have less GM influence.

(Skip to details on the: 9-3 Convertible or 9-3 SportCombi, or 9-3x)

New for 2011
There are no significant changes for 2011.

Exterior
9-3 styling features include a coupe-like silhouette, an integrated grille and headlights, short front and rear overhangs, and a steeply raked windshield and back window. Exterior features include:

  • Available 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels
  • Available 18-inch performance tires
  • Available power moonroof

Interior
XM Satellite Radio and OnStar are available on all models. An upscale Bose Centerpoint sound system is optional on base sedans and SportCombis and standard with the Aero trim. The 9-3 sedan accommodates up to five people. Interior features include:

  • Power driver’s seat
  • OnStar and Bluetooth technology
  • Standard dual-zone climate control
  • Standard cooled glove box

Under the Hood
All 9-3 models come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 210 horsepower, available with either a manual or automatic transmission. A turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6 is no longer offered. Front-wheel drive is standard on all three body styles, and all-wheel drive (what Saab calls XWD) is available on the sedan and 9-3X SportCombi wagon. Mechanical features include:

  • 210-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with 221 pounds-feet of torque
  • Six-speed manual standard on base Turbo4 sedan and no-cost option on other sedans
  • Five-speed automatic available with front-wheel drive
  • Six-speed automatic on XWD models

Safety
A long list of standard safety equipment includes:

  • Side impact airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Active head restraints
  • Electronic stability system
  • Antilock brakes with brake-force distribution
  • Front seat belt pretensioners and load-limiters

9-3 Convertible
The convertible features the same chassis dynamics as the sedan. Saab says the 9-3 convertible is nearly three times as stiff as its soft-top predecessor. The chassis features a supplementary “ring of steel” reinforcement that compensates for the loss of structural rigidity that convertibles ordinarily suffer. The seat belts are integrated into the seat frames, and the rear seats have pop-up roll bars.

The convertible comes in base or Aero form, both with the 210-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder found in other 9-3s and front-wheel drive. Leather seats are standard. In base models, a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic is available. Aero models offer a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Back to top

9-3 SportCombi
The SportCombi is a station wagon that features a signature wedge-shape profile ending in vertical, LED-lit taillamps and an integrated roof spoiler.

The SportCombi wagon comes with the same 210-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder as all other 9-3 models in Turbo4 and Aero trim levels with front-wheel drive and as a version called the 9-3X with all-wheel drive.

Backseat headroom and toe space are abundant, but legroom suffers if the front seat is adjusted rearward. The center occupant must endure a high, hard perch and straddle a tall floor hump. Cargo space is appealing. Back to top

Saab 9-3x
The Saab 9-3x is based on the SportCombi’s wagon body style and designed to offer more off-road capabilities. Its ride height is about 1.3 inches higher than a normal SportCombi, and the 9-3x comes with standard all-wheel drive.

Like the other 9-3 versions, the 9-3x is powered by a 210-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The 9-3x offers either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Other features include:

  • Protective dark gray moldings around bumper, wheel arches and side sills
  • Skid panels with aluminum finish
  • Roof rails
  • 17-inch wheels Back to top

  • I had a 2003 9.

I had a 2003 9.3 that was not a convertible. It had all the packages of an Aero, but it wasn't. This didn't compare to the two other Saabs that I owned that were Bullet proof 1985 900 S and a 1989 900 S. I'm not sure if it was due to GM owning them when the 9.3 was built. The 9.3 had serious quality control issues. I would hit the turn signal lever with my knee getting into the car breaking it off. $150 a whack to replace it. Suspension issues, turbo issue and everything in between that were expensive to repair. Fun car to drive but it was no Saab!

  • If only they were still in business!!

First with the problem.... finding parts. It is now years since Saab closed down and I have had to do some hunting for parts for the very rarely needed repairs. It has been an excellent driving, reliable, quiet, and comfortable car! If you are comfortable searching online and crossing fingers when you buy a part then this is an excellent choice for the money! So sad that they are no longer being made.... I have owned this vehicle for a little over 6 1/2 years, was the third owner and put the most mileage on the vehicle.

  • Make sure you can find parts

When the car has around 100,000 miles, the convertible has many rattles, and the underside (subframe) has major rust problems and replacement parts are non-existent.

  • I own two Saab 93 .. 2009 ..2011

I owned two Saab 93 ... my brand new 2009 6 Spd manual is a super car ! got into an accident and it saved my life .... had it rebuilt through a VIP salvage program and its still running today .... my wife drives it . I purchased a single owned 2011 Aero automatic last season ...and other than the seats and the Bose system I prefer the base 2009 ... The look of the Aero is amazing ...but the sport suspension is a bit much for me and I prefer again the base model . The 2009 Base 93 is the real deal ... great road feel and ride ... and the 6 Spd manual gives you lots of power .... when you need it ....

  • Best all around sporty car i have ever owned

Have awd model with 6 speed auto, actuallt 2 a 2011 and 2012..manual with paddle shifters...its a blast to drive, i consistantly challenge other 'sports car' drivers in the hilly country around here and on interstates its handles great at high speed..being able to control and slow down car like having a manual tranny is king! Its gives you much more acceleration options until you hit rev limiter at about 6300 rpm-i think, layout of dash and controls in just abt perfect imho. Except cruise control on turn sig lever i inadvertantly turn on and once or twice engaged without knowing...stereo kicks xxx stock esp control too...this is by far best car ever..reason i get hit up to sell in parking lots by total strangers you know..me and my gf play a game called germans vs swedes..bmw vs saab...count driving or parked with plates...saabs consistantly beat quanitys of bmws here in snowy upstate ny

  • This is Saab # 4 for me.

Quick. The engine is stronger than one would think part of that is because the car only weighs 3300 lbs. low thirties at hwy speeds ,30 around my town. Handles well, very stable. This car feels smart like it knows what it's doing. The engineering shows up in the light weight, tight rattle free body and suspension and powerful engine. Mine is a relatively rare six speed manual as I wish to be intimately involved in driving my car id I wish to be uninvolved or just a passenger I will take a bus. Excelent car and I am sure GM sold Saab because they there was resistance in Saab in letting GM screw the cars up and compromising the part quality and engineering.

this car is so unique and fun. I really wish the car company was still around to see what else they could come up with. Cooled glove box is awesome for summer road trips. the SportCombi cargo area is excellent. utilizes space as if it were an SUV.

  • Extinct Headturner

Although Saab technically does not exist and has not existed since 2011 (the last year they imported Saabs to the US), they are still headturners. Most of the time, people confuse my Saab 93 Turbo4 for a high class BMW. Do not let the fact that Saab is out of business scare you away from in my opinion the most bang for your buck car on the market. The Saab 93 2003-2011 uses two different GM engines; the B207R ( 2 liter, 4 cylinder, single turbo taken from the Cobalt SS and many other GM cars) and the B284(2.8 liter, V6, single turbo). Parts are readily available for all Saab 93's. My 2011 93 Turbo4 (2.0 liter 4 cylinder front wheel drive automatic transmission) gets around 29MPG's highway and about 23MPG's city. People still complement me on this car and often ask even what it is. Additionally to add to all the benefits I've mentioned, the Saab 93 is easily one of the safest vehicles on the road.

  • The 4th Saab

I have always changed the type and make of car when I have changed (and I have owned a lot of cars). However, this is the 4th Saab I have owned! Great cars, practical, fairly powerful, economical and reliable. I found this Saab on line mainly because I wanted manual transmission and most Saab's here in California are automatic. It became a road trip because I flew to Louisville, KY and drove the car home. The Saab performed flawlessly for the 2700 mile drive home driving at consistent high speed and giving around 32 mpg. Also comfortable, quiet and, because of the automatic temperature control, effortless. As with my other Saab's, I expect many years of reliable performance.
