Bullet proof.... no it's garbage

I got my 98 Camry used with 73000 miles about a year ago. Since then I replaced all 4 tires, timing belt, brakes, and got it a tune up which I expected to do when I bought the car. However I also had to replace struts, and valve cover gaskets. Today I was just informed that the rack and pinion steering is going which I probably will not fix. Currently the car has 78000 miles. Overall this car is very over rated, and has not been reliable at all. Car has good acceleration though, but seats are terrible, plus interior lights burnt out, and the window switches are very loose. Sound system is also the worst I have ever heard.

from MB diesel to V6 Camry gas XLE

not the ride of an MB but not the cost either. Reliable and it does the job. Economy is about 17 MPG on highway with regular gas. Oil Changes are as frequent as MB diesel, every 5,000 miles but other maintenance is not as costly but as frequently. Brake pads at 40,000 with rotars cut and trued. Coolant flush and water pump and timing chain belt at 60,000. If you are after reliability, consider this. If roads are good, this will be a pleasure. The front wheel drive aids in snowy weather. Dealer service is excellent and keeps the car in shape. Alignment and tire rotations give maximum tire value. I can see why Toyota became a best seller.

Not worth it

This car is not worth the price, for the hassle you are going to get, from this guy. I got a chance to see this car.

This is my first and only car I've ever owned!

I've had my '98 Camry LE since 2004 and I love it. Mine came with leather interior and a sunroof. It's a quiet and smooth drive. My father owns a 2001 Camry CE and the times he's driven mine he says it's smoother than his and handles better than his Camry.

a good value

i've had a toyota camry for 5 years, the only part i don't like is the 60,000 mile service check, when they have to replace the timing belt it is a very expensive job. Some minor problems, but, it's a solid car.

My third success

This is the third Toyota Camry LE I've owned in the last 15 years, and all of them have been exceptional. Unfortunately, the 2nd one was "totalled" (insurance decision) in a minor car accident,( right after I put on 4 new tires). They require minimum repair, as long as they are serviced properly and regularly. My '98 will celebrate its 10th year, and still performing very nicely. Kudos to Toyota!!!

water pump problems

This car has been excellent except for water pump problems - my 3rd one is leaking at 92,000 miles - so that is 4 water pumps in 92,000 miles! I am careful about scheduled maintenance - oil changes etc. I wonder if anyone else had this problem with the 98 camry?

Fun to drive

I love this car, its very fun to drive. The pick up is great, and the ride is very comfortable. The original stereo is also very powerful. I would recomend it to everyone.

Very reliable and very comfortable

I bought the 1998 Toyota Camry used and have had it for over five years now. It that time, the car has never been in for an unscheduled service - no oil leaks, no interior squeaks, just normal maintenance. The Camry is very reliable and demands little attention from the owner. The seats feel extremely soft and comfortable, even on long trips. The car is not very fast, but its lack of performance is compensated by the excellent gas economy for its size. Mine has 119,000 miles now and will probably run another 100K. It has been making minor engine noise at start up for the past two years, but performance has not deteriorated because of it, which indicates there is probably a loose part somewhere that needs tightening. Otherwise, it`s been a great car overall.

Competent, Comfortable, and Reliable

The only non-routine repairs I can recall are the driver side mirror going out (26K rental car), the struts rattle (all '97-'99), the ignition switch died early on, and ABS sensor went bad. Do the fluids maintenance and the timing belt on schedule and the car just goes and goes. 34 MPG on the highway (4 cyl) and 100K on the first set of brake linings. Amazing !!
