Outstanding Reliability, Fuel Economy, and Comfort

The 1998 Toyota Camry is a smooth-riding, quiet, comfortable, and spacious sedan. Reliability has been above average, needing only routine maintenance. Fuel economy is best in class for this size vehicle, ranging from 25 to 35 mpg in actual driving. The controls are logically placed. The steering is responsive but easy. Visibility is excellent. The 5 speed manual overdrive shifts smoothly. Numerous conveniences such as storage pockets and bins, cupholders, an auxiliary power outlet, and an overhead console for a garage door opener or sunglasses enhance comfort. The rear seats fold, allowing access to a large pass-through between the trunk and passenger compartments. This allows for the occasional trip to the hardware store to bring home 8 foot long 2x4s. For do-it-yourselfers, the engine compartment allows extremely easy access to the oil filter (best I have seen in any car), in part because the spacious front of the engine compartment is a crumple zone. There is plenty of head room, shoulder room, and legroom for real adults to sit in either the front bucket or rear bench seats. A child seat can easily be secured to the locking rear center seatbelt. Overall, this has been the best car I have owned (and my third Toyota). I highly recommend it.

Very Dependable

The 1998 Toyota Camry is not a stylish car or one with great performance. However, it is extremely durable and dependable over many years of use. If maintained regularly the '98 Camry will run smoothly every day, even during cold winter weather. The acceleration is a bit weak, but more than adequate for city and freeway driving. Overall, the handling, while certainly not up to par with higher-level luxury cars, feels confident and smooth. This is a comfortable car with plenty of space for five passengers, and it has ample trunk space. While it may not be an exciting vehicle, the 1998 Toyota Camry is certainly reliable and will last through years of everyday use.
