Exceeds mpg expectations

This little car far exceeds my expectations on fuel savings. I drive to various client's homes all day in an urban area. Most of my miles are spent in stop-and-go traffic and are combination highway (over 50mph) and city. I drive at least 70miles per day. This car gets excellent mpg on suburban/city roads, which actually makes me want to take the back roads and side roads, making the drive less boring! I regularly get 60+mpg during my day. Yesterday I got 68mpg average driving 32miles over hilly back-roads. The first day I had it I drove like I would a "normal" car and got 50+mpg. In crazy traffic where other drivers are braking and jack-rabbit starting all over the place I get 45-48mpg average. It is slow to accelerate when merging onto the highway but not slow enough to be a deal-breaker. It takes some getting used to, but once I drove around for a few days and attentively monitored the eco indicator I was able to optimize my fuel savings and still drive without annoying other drivers (for the most part). The interior is mostly hard plastics. Some will find it a bit strange but others will find it interesting and fun. The seats are very comfortable and my back never starts to hurt like in other cars I've ridden in for a long time. I am 5'5" and I feel very comfortable in this car. My husband is 6'5" and said he feels fine in the passenger seat, although he is sure he would never be comfortable in the back seat. That area is probably best reserved for kids or shorter adults. The cargo area is limited but the seats fold down easily for extra room. Handling is superb although there is some play in the steering at high speeds. It corners extremely well and can make u-turns in very small spaces. Perfect for city parking! The stereo system lacks power but I believe that might be to reduce weight. I was able to make adjustments to the treble, bass and balance to make the sound quality better. I have read that the stereo system in the Prius C 3 & 4 is better than the 1 or 2. The entune system is user friendly and fun! I frequently have to take/make calls when driving around and my android phone automatically syncs with the hands-free phone system. I love being able to use voice commands for phone and nav! Apps are also easy to use if you have a data plan with your phone. I have noticed that there is quite a bit of noise while traveling on the highway; I recommend taking the C onto the highway during a test drive to see if it is bothersome. Everyday I am entertained by looking at my drive stats and challenging myself to get better fuel savings. There is even a video-game of sorts to help show the driver how they are driving and helps them achieve better results. Overall this car has turned a boring drive into something I actually look forward to!

Prius C2 giving my money's worth and then some!

I feel bad for Disappointed Shopper, but their review was based on the Dealer charging $3k over MSRP and not on the car itself. Had they done a little internet shopping they would see that almost every other dealer is selling at or below MSRP (which is what Toyota requests from its dealers). If you're looking to buy a Prius C, then you're entering a different world of transportation. It's a Hybrid Synergy Drive Subcompact, not just a Subcompact. So your decision should be with the mindset that you're going to be driving a vehicle that's not the normal engine/drive train configuration. It's going to be loaded with green technology that doesn't exist in the normal vehicle, and you'll have to understand and accept that it's going to drive and sound a little differently. But "differently" is not necessarily a bad thing, nor is it really that much different. I've owned my Prius C2 for almost 3 months and 2500 miles. I could not be happier and actually enjoy the ride and the different driving nature of the Prius C. It does make subtle sounds with the electric motors, regenerating braking system, engine off when at stop. But none are annoying...just different. I drive a 10+ mile one-way commute with some 55 mph highway, some 45 mph rural road, some 35 mph City, some hill and some level. The result is a consistent 55 to 60 mpg round trip. And that's driving in a normal fashion in ECO Mode. If I "hyper-mile" when no one is behind me (which is actually kinda of a fun game/test), I can get 70 mpg easy, and on some short runs the engine never fires up. You can read all the big company reviews you want, but the fact is that for under $21k, the C2 has all the amenities 90% of car owners desire. Bluetooth, upgraded sound system, power everything, all the media connections, auto temperature control, and very nice subcompact ride and handling. It's roomier than you would think, it's solid, and even looks nice and sporty. Acceleration is more than sufficient to keep people from driving up your tailpipe. Also, bear in mind that service intervals are much fewer and farther between than a normal subcompact. The engine is devoid of any drive belts. All systems, including air conditioning and the steering, are electric operated. And because the engine runs less, it too requires less service and suffers less wear and tear. All these comparisons to regular subcompacts, talking about how long it will take to recapture the additional upfront price with the gas savings are annoying to me. You know going in that a Hybrid is going to cost more than a normal car. But I think it's also the intangibles that help drive such a purchase. Like the satisfaction that I'm going to go weeks without stopping at the pumps, and then I'm only going to put in 7 or 8 gallons of gas when I do. That, in and by itself, mentally erases the additional acquisition cost. Factor in Toyota quality and reputation for long term durability, excellent resale values and cost retention, and it?s a no brainer. It's a funner, smaller, less costly, and more enjoyable version of the regular Prius. An affordable Hybrid for the masses.

green and great!

The Prius C is a great car all-around; despite its "city" designation, it's well suited for highway and suburban use... any use, really. It's comfortable for my 6'2" frame on long and short trips; it feels nicely planted as you drive. Fold-down seats provide respectable cargo space. Without making any effort to hypermile it, I get an average 46.5mpg in the burbs, and 54mpg on highway trips. The bells and whistles are comprehensive, in fact, maybe a bit much (even if I had a serious stock portfolio, I wouldn't be checking it on the road). The jack placement (under the driver's seat) is the only dumb thing about the C. Highly recommended for America's drivers.

Over Priced

We researched the Toyota Prius C and decided that the model 3 had all of the amenities that as a senior couple we needed. The ride was too stiff and uncomfortable but we were willing to forego comfort for the excellent mileage rating and the low MSRP. When we tried to buy the Prius C-3 the dealership claimed that because of the popularity of this model they were insisting on selling the car for $3000 over MSRP. We ended up purchasing a 2012 Camry LE with a few dealer add-ons for $3600 below MSRP. We are happy with the better ride and comfort. The savings of $700 per year on gas with the Prius C does not add up with the US goverment comparison. When compared to the Camry LE, the Prius C will only save $280 per year. With the prive/value difference it will take over 20 years to realize a savings. We still like the Prius C but advise that no one buy it at the current inflated prices. The Camry LE is not as exciting but is a solid buy.

Toyota prius c

I've had the car for about 2 months. This car is the only car I've ever owned which exceeds the stated mpg rating. If your concerned about the cost of commuting, this is the car you need. Drawbacks: Not much power, Small cargo space.

My tiny little car

I have owned my Pruis C now for 3 months and still learning how to drive it. I live in Canada so everything is in KM. I am 6' 3" and 260 lbs, I never thought I would be able to get in. With the seat lowered all the way there is still head room for me. This car is rated at 3.5/100 km in the city which is 81 mpg. I have got up to 2.1/100 km in the city when staying around the house and doing shopping. The other day I went to WalMart 3.5 Km or 2.1 miles and tried to keep my speed at 40km or 24mph so the gas motor would not kick in. The dash said I got 2.1/100 or 110 mpg! Who cares about gas prices now!

I love this car

Really disagree with consumer reports, and I'm a loyal fan of CR. I wanted a hatchback and drove the Honda Fit which I almost bought, but didn't find the ride better. It's a bit peppier, but not more comfortable, especially over bumps. So, I decided to spend the extra money in order to save on gas. I would love to have the cargo space of the Fit with the mileage of the Prius C. Perhaps the higher models are pricier for what you get, but the One that I bought has plenty of features for the money. I don't find the inside cheap looking at all, and no different from the Fit in terms of the amount of plastic. So, I love this car. It's a great ride.

Having Fun

Bought the Toyota Prius C two model three weeks ago and enjoying the heck out of it. Consistently beating the mileage and don't notice the tiny size when I'm behind the wheel. Still leaning how to drive it for the best gas mileage but so far, no complaints.

Perfect

I just saw the Consumer Report review on the car and to me they are WRONG! I absolutely disagree with CR, not because I own this car but because I have different view towards the car. In 4 months, I test drove Fiesta, Focus, Versa, Elantra, Civic and Fit before buying our Prius C. You can feel much worse wind noise in Civic and Fiesta than in Prius C. May be the CR drove their car on a windy day! We couldn't find it bumpy at all. In fact, my wife decided to drive an Elantra, a Versa, and our CRV on the same road and her feeling was that there was not much of difference between all sedans. However, I agree that in long run you may save couple of hundreds if you choose Fiesta. I tried hard to convince myself to get one but I didn't like the interior. Prius C is the best car that saves you some money in city.
