Best Auto Mobile for Young Teens

Perfect first car if you really want to feel poor. I had purchased a 2002 vw jetta 2.slow and omg its my favorite auto mobile. i drive it every day for atleast 2hours total and fill up after every 4th day. does in fact break down constantly. (because its just old asf) but the car is just overall mid and makes me feel like a peasant walking around with a horse and buggy and even that would beat me in a race.

Piece of crud

Bought it new in 2002. Thought all the issues had been worked out. Not! It was in the shop more than our garage. Every other month was a new issue. Same as my friend’s GTI that he bought at the same time. Same issues. Windows that wouldn’t roll back up; radio didn’t work; engine problems; shakes and rattles everywhere; and the wait at the dealership was extremely long bc they had a backlog of problems to deal with and the parts couldn’t come in fast enough. And judging by VW’s current reliability ratings, it looks like things haven’t changed much.

Best fuel mileage ever, poor reliability

Jetta TDI, great mileage, manual trans. Horrible reliability. It broke constantly. Owned it for 9 years and non-stop repairs. It was pretty fun on corners and performed well in the snow, but always broken compared to American or Japanese cars I've owned.

Most Reliable Car I've Owned

Great car all around. Excellent mileage, always ran, always started, easy to maintain and parts were easy to get. Great for trips as the highway mileage many times would be over 50 mpg. City driving was easily over 35+ mpg. The only reason my wife and I are replacing this car is the need to haul grandkids and all their necessary belongings. We have purchased a 2019 Tiguan and look forward to the same excellence that we have come to expect from VW.

Wouldn't honestly recommend

This is my first car, it was my great grandmothers car after my mom bought it new and sold it to her, then it was sold back to my mom and eventually given to me. We live in the Appalachian mountains and honestly I don't know how this car has made it around for as long as it has. Having only FWD, in ice and snow I'm basically screwed. Repairs are very very expensive. I've been window shopping for a new car. Then, right before I hit 122k miles, it stops driving! I'll tell you as long as I've had this car it hasn't worked properly. My mother ran the xxx end off of it and never took proper care of it, but j was assured by my father she'd still be an easy and reliable car. It's not. Having it valued at around $500, I've put three times that back into it just in a year. And now she won't move. The engine will run, not without loud thumpings and whirrings, but the transmission has died. It' left me stuck without a car. And this car has always been picky too, not wanting to start if it's too cold out (below 15°F, which it often reaches in the winter). I'm very unhappy with this car and all the issues it seems to have regardless of how well you take care of it, it's a bad car for where I live, having lots of hills and harsh winters and uneven roads. Oh that's another thing! If you aren't careful, you can easily scrape the bottom of this car on uneven/bumpy roads, putting a hole in your oil pan or even in your radiator like I have. My ABS module is failing as well, not putting enough pressure to the the back brakes. VW's are also impossible to work on. Growing up I'd help my dad change oil/tires/breaks on all of our cars, and while it's possible it's much more difficult and time consuming because of the way the engine is put together. All around it is not a great car except for maybe light personal use in a place with flat landscape and mild weather, and if you don't mind putting a lot more money than it's actually worth back into it.

dependable with some reservations.

certain areas to consider are cooling system.water pump.Timing belt ignition coils and maybe a new transmission.Mine went out after 160,000 miles. The motor on thess cars are bullet proof.always use synthetic oils.

Worst car I've ever bought

This car was still adorable even for its age. My mistake was not having it inspected so I'd know it needed a 5K new transmission for a 2K car. Motor is still great. I'm hoping to sell it for parts to someone who doesn't need to drive it since it's going to die any day now.
