Vehicle Overview
The Passat is Volkswagen’s midsize car, and it’s available in both sedan and wagon body styles. Competitors include the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

(Skip to details on the: Passat Wagon)

New for 2009
The all-wheel-drive option and the V-6 engine option have been dropped. Heated seats and fog lights are standard, as are automatic headlights. The Passat is now available in only one trim level: Komfort.

Exterior
A medallion-shaped grille covers the Passat’s front end, and sweeping lines enhance the model’s sides. The body is 188.2 inches long and 71.7 inches wide. The Passat’s brakes have a wiping feature that removes moisture on the discs.

  • Sport suspension and Volkswagen’s Adaptive Front Lighting System optional
  • 16-inch wheels standard
  • 17- or 18-inch wheels optional
  • New chrome window trim standard

Interior
The Passat has room for up to five people. The 60/40-split folding rear seat has a pass-thru provision. Sedan owners get 14.2 cubic feet of trunk room. The Passat has an electronic parking brake, and the driver faces a four-spoke tilt/telescoping steering wheel.

  • Simulated leather seat trim standard
  • Leather upholstery available
  • Air conditioning, CD stereo standard
  • Optional navigation system with iPod connectivity
  • Optional park assist

Under the Hood
Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder develops 200 horsepower and 207 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic that incorporates Tiptronic manual gear selection can team with the four-cylinder engine. The Passat is no longer available with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine or all-wheel drive.

Safety

  • Six airbags standard, including side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags
  • Rear-seat side-impact airbags optional
  • Adjustable head restraints standard; front seat restraints are active
  • Standard all-disc antilock brakes
  • Standard brake assist
  • Standard electronic stability system

2009 Passat Wagon
Like the sedan, the 2009 wagon is available in only one trim level: Komfort. That includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that develops 200 hp and 207 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic that incorporates Tiptronic manual gear selection works with the engine.

The wagon provides increased cargo space: 35.8 feet compared to the sedan’s 14.2, however it is listed as being .2 inches shorter than the sedan. A power liftgate is standard on wagons.

The Passat wagon has all the same standard safety equipment as the sedan, as well as optional side-impact airbags for the rear seats, as does the sedan.

  • The low oil pressure on the 2 0 engines

The low oil pressure in the engine makes the car not reliable. But the car is nice. The motor it's oiling problem needs to be a recall on it all Tham 2.0 motor

  • This car can constantly handle being driven hard

If you need a car that you can drive all day long and pass by gas stations the Passat is the answer. If you want style and not to worry about performance this is the car for you.

  • Unreliable and EXPENSIVE Repairs

I bought a used 2009 Passat at 4 years 65K, ALL Maintenance Records. 1 week later, CEL. Clogged PVC replaced $400 at dealer (3 month, 3000mile warranty not covered. 7K later overheated, on side of road, needed water pump. $1200 at non-VW specialty shop. VW dealer $1800. about 6 months later water pump failed. Shop replaced and told me they used silicone sealant around top of pump. Showed me tech blogs that part was defective but no VW recall. Also showed tech blog, TSB's about timing chain tensioners breaking, walnut carbon cleaning needed so I could make decision to save up or get rid of it. During that year, Valve cover oil leak, $1400 at Dealer (Speciality shop too booked). LAST STRAW was fuel pump running with ignition turned off. I first thought it was turbo fan as tired and late at night. Next morning, battery dead. Called AAA, He jumped battery started car, turned off and said sound coming from back. Happened in a car he had, fuel pump. I disconnected battery at night so it would start in AM. Called Dealer as recall came out that week, BUT NO FIX. Insisted they give a loaner until fix or think of something. They gave a loaner while in shop about 1 week. Tech bypassed circuit wiring for temporary fix. Seemed to work, but obviously not reliable. Traded in. This year 2020, received notice part of Class Action against VWA, faulty Water Pumps. I bought because of GOOD reviews. I might as well bought a BMW. NOW have KIA Sportage, transmission stuck in gear. KIA fixed under warranty, which is great as when it happened again, they replaced transmission. AND when it happened again, KIA is buying back...Next looking at Acura RDX or Telluride.

  • The least reliable car I owned!

Timing chain failure at 79k, after a lot of money was spent on maintenance. Oil was being changed regularly every 5k miles. First leaks started after 60k. The VW's 2.0 tsi is the worst engine ever.

  • Great First Car

The car is nicely styled and appointed. Though the tech is a little behind the current (no bluetooth streaming) - it is still feature-rich. The Komfort package adds some great features. The seats are super comfortable. The car handles nice and has power to spare.

  • Fantastic Family Hauler & Adventure Wagon

Love this car so much! Hauls everything and is more spacious than most SUVs. Has been very reliable through 100k miles. The 2.0 Turbo engine is really a wonderful thing with more than adequate power and minimal lag. Dinged handling a bit as it does have a fair amount of body roll and tends to understeer when pushed, but this is minor in the grand scheme of things for a family wagon. Exterior styling is really nice, though I stopped short of 5 stars since if you look at comparable Audi wagon you'll see that the rear could have been more "swoopy", though that would cut into the cargo capacity, so take your pick. Interior design is quite handsome, with a character line running from B-pillar up through the doors and around the dash, glove box crease mimics that of the exterior (love that for some reason). Leatherette seats look like real deal but wear like iron! Seats seriously still look new with no cracking or discoloration (note, my car has always been garaged). Sun visors slide to help cover side window gap that otherwise lets the sun blind you...and a second sun visor can be used at the same time for twisting roads. Plenty of cubbies and hidden storage throughout. Luxuries on this model include heated front seats, automatic rear wagon hatch, CD changer, and XM Satellite radio. Super reliable, fun to drive, stylish, and cavernous ride for all the people!

  • My first and last VW

I bought this car in May hoping for the Volkswagen reliability. I previously owned a old Volvo that had its issues so I decided to take the leap and finally get a Volkswagen. Lucky for me, I got an extended warranty. The car has been in and out of the shop almost as long as I have had it in my possession. The first major trip was a grueling 41 day ordeal costing upwards of $2,500. The list of problems was unbelievable. The second major trip was only 1 month after I got it back the first time. This trip was a $1,500 visit. The steering column lock defective warning rendered my car not driveable. That's $4,000 worth of work done in just 8 months.... Cut to now. I've had it back for roughly 3 weeks. I live in Maine where snow is inevitable. My driveway has roughly an inch of snow on it right now (currently still snowing). This car can not even make it up my driveway. I have never owned a car that can't get through an inch of snow. Who knows what I am going to do for the next 4 months of winter weather. Bottom line...worst decision I have ever made was buying this car. Stay away, I wish I had.

  • Luxury wagon without the high price tag

This is my fourth Volkswagen, and it?s the best own I?ve yet to own. The ride is much smoother and quieter than the Jetta Sportwagen. This was the last year VW made the Passat wagon in Germany and it is truly a fine example of German engineering. Tight steering and top end acceleration that?s Autobahn ready.
