Safety First with Style

Safe, economical, stylish, and plenty of room. This car was exactly what I was looking for. The dependability is top of the list when it comes to Volvo!

Overseas delivery and continues great

I test drove this car in the Swedish high mountains before purchase to test handling in the snow. awesome. The lane tracking and pilot assist cruise control are awesome. the collision avoidance cross lane control has saved me twice. gas mileage is mid 30s on the highway and high 20s in town. grandson loves the full sunroof opening.

Fun Small Family Car; Minor convenience issues

I wanted a smaller SUV for my family of four. The Volvo XC40 was a new model at the time, so it was an unknown. I loved the look of it and style options (I got the Amazon blue with the white roof) and Volvo is known for safety. It had many of the extra options like moon roof, heated front seats and some of the safety features such as driver assist/lane assist and most importantly the adaptive cruise control as well as the speed zone detection. At the time, it was one of the only ones with the technology screen to accommodate Android Auto, which was important for me. The driving modes are also cool, where you can change from off-road to comfort to eco settings (although I tested it in town and notice little to no difference in fuel economy when driving in eco mode). I live in Indiana so I haven't driven it in rugged snowstorms yet but it is a comfortable and overall safe drive. A few of the things that bother me are that every once in a while the screen glitches or goes blank or the Android Auto doesn't connect via the USB. The air conditioning heating vents are a slim design, due to the large touchscreen, so they are really too narrow to cool/heat effectively. The sensor to detect speed zones and cars reduces the overhead storage so no sunglasses holder. They did add a trash can, which is quite handy but very hard to reach in and empty the contents after pulling it out. These are all minor issues. It does take premium gas, which may not be an issue to some, but will tack on 60-70 cents per gallon. Gas mileage is also not the best in my opinion. I get 23-24 miles per gallon consistently, and even on the highway I get 25-26 mpg, which is way worse than my Mazda CX-9, a much bigger car. I'm also not a fan of the Volvo service department in my local town. They do offer free valet service, but I have found that they don't always fix/catch everything, they are slow to respond and complete the maintenance work, plus there is only one in my area, and it's 30 minutes away. Keep those things in mind when purchasing. Overall, I get a lot of compliments on the car, and it's fun to drive. I did a lot of research before deciding on this car. It is not perfect, but a good car overall.

Volvo XC40...Most Outstanding Small Luxury SUV

July 2012: After ~ 18 months of researching small luxury SUCs, I recently purchased a Certified Pre-Owned (6,066 miles) Volvo XC40, Momentum style. It’s fully loaded with every possible upgrade the style offers. The 182 hp turbo has plenty of power and good torque, more than sufficient for myself and my wife (we’re retired but still wanted something with very good performance). Or, you can get a different style with 245 hp. The on-board center display provides easy access to the car’s systems and settings. The digital driver display is great, I’ve grown a little tired of analog. The Parking Pilot which will nearly auto parallel park the car, even finding spaces that will accommodate The XC40’s size, is a great addition. As are the blind spot information system (BLIS), Collision avoidance, auto pilot, auto cruise control where you can set following-spacing, auto on/off ignition (e.g. when stopped at a red light), Lane-keeping, and on and on are outstanding. The leather interior is of the best quality and workmanship. Even with the upgraded 20 inch wheels the ride is very comfortable. There are MANY YouTube comparisons of the XC40 to the other European luxury small SUVs, I.e. BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Audi, and the XC40 is nearly always rated the best overall value.

Transmission Issues !!!!!

Warning, Transmission Issues !!! Driving 70 MPH and it shifted down from the top gear to third gear, feels like you are being rear ended. “Faulty wire at the park Neutral switch” is the fault. The fix? Replace the wire to the park Neutral switch.

Perfect for small family with pets

After a deer collision totaled my old car I was looking for something to fit our current needs. 2 adults, 2 kids, and 2 dogs. It had to have enough power to be fun to drive. Enough off-road capability that we can easily reach the camp sites and trail heads we want to go on -- nothing heavy duty. And it needed to be safe. I test drove and looked at everything in the small to mid-size SUV category. This one fit the bill perfectly. Seat comfort is great for both me and my husband (usually I love and he hates it, or he loves it and I hate it). Both kids fit well in the back seat (no small feat since one "kid" is now almost 6 feet tall) and the back is perfect for 2 siberian huskies -- not too big for them to roll around but also enough room for them to easily fit. And when the dogs aren't there it is great for groceries and hauling other things. I love the close and lock button on the rear lift gate -- I use it all the time with my pups, hauling groceries in, and more. While I'm still getting used to the vehicle overall I haven't found anything that takes away from me loving it.

Solid, Safe, and Comfortable

The car is very comfortable. The handling is good. The engine is responsive. The only drawback is trying to get used to the many advances in electronics and the operation of the voice controls - it should be a little easier.

ADDENDUM

After the car driving great for about a 6 weeks, the vibration is now back. This is an issue MANY people are having. Check the internet and dont buy or lease the car until you drive it at 70 mph for a few miles.

Least reliable car I have ever owned

In only 4000 miles, I have had to take it to the dealership 5 times. Problems with vibrations in pedal and steering wheel at high speeds. Ultimately, they replaced the tires. Then found the front rotors needed replacement.
