10 Biggest News Stories of the Week: Hyundai Tucson, Kia Stinger Ride Up on Range Rover

Just as the 2022 Hyundai Tucson readies to launch the SUV’s fourth generation in the U.S. next year, the outgoing model is facing a serious safety concern. A federal safety recall for 180,000 model-year 2019-21 Tucsons — along with some 9,400 model-year 2019 Kia Stinger sports sedans — due to an engine compartment fire in the area where the hydraulic electronic control unit for the antilock brakes is located. As the saying goes, “safety first” — so, appropriately, our report on the sizable Tucson/Stinger recall takes first among Cars.com’s most popular articles this week.

Another recall — for 1,300 model-year 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque luxury SUVs for a problem that could cause a false reading in the tire pressure monitoring system — also ranked high this week, at No. 3, just behind our explainer on what a “boxer” engine is.

Meanwhile, Cars.com reviewer Jennifer Geiger’s comprehensive critique of the 2020 Jeep Compass finds itself at No. 4. Geiger says the Compass has the potential to be a strong player in the compact SUV class, but its weak powertrain, poor gas mileage and skimpy standard safety features, among other factors, put it behind competitors.

“The Jeep Compass, especially in Trailhawk trim, has one of the most robust off-road setups in the compact SUV class,” Geiger states in her review. “Only the Toyota RAV4 Adventure model can match it, but the RAV4 does many other things better than the Compass. And if you’re not looking to go off-road, the Compass’ weaknesses mount quickly. As competitors continue to add more standard safety features and increase fuel efficiency, it’s apparent the Compass needs to head in a new direction.”
