It’s getting difficult to overstate how much we at like the current-generation Volkswagen Tiguan — when it was first redesigned in 2017, we put the Tiguan up against some of the top competitors in the small SUV class and it won our comparison test. This year, we did it again — and the Tiguan still bested the field despite updates and redesigns for much of its competition.

$20,590 $360 price drop reviewer Mike Hanley praised the driving experience in the Tiguan.

“The Tiguan’s driving manners set it apart,” Hanley wrote. “With light-effort, responsive steering and crisp handling on suburban streets and interstate highways alike, the Tiguan was the most fun to drive. And thanks to a settled, stable feel on the highway, it was the only one I’d be interested in taking on a long road trip; the others felt too skittish at highway speeds. The Subaru Forester’s engaging driving experience also impressed, but its highway manners fell short of the Tiguan’s.

“The Tiguan’s drivetrain makes enough power to avoid feeling sluggish. All trim levels are powered by a 184-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that drives an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Tiguan accelerates up to highway speeds well enough, but high-speed passing power is modest. There’s some gas-pedal lag when accelerating from a standstill, but selecting the automatic transmission’s Sport mode erases it. There’s no persistent engine drone like you get in the Rogue and RAV4.”

Hanley’s Tiguan review is our third-most-popular review of the past week behind the 2020 Kia Telluride at No. 1 and the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer at No. 2.

The past week’s most-watched videos are once again topped by the very compact SUV comparison test that the Tiguan won. In second place is another Volkswagen video: our head-to-head comparison between the new 2019 Jetta GLI and a 2019 Golf GTI. Third place goes to our consistently popular instructional video for how to drive a car with a manual transmission, and fourth to our review of a week spent in the Tesla Model X electric SUV. And finally, in fifth place you can learn more about the new 2020 Ford Explorer ST.
