BMW is giving the X1 some minor tweaking for 2020, including giving its smallest SUV an oversized version of the kidney grille in line with those on the brand’s other newer models.
With the mid-cycle freshening, the X1’s grille now is connected by chrome in the middle and is flanked by reshaped headlights, with new LED lights optional. The bumper gets deeper sculpting and linear foglights. The rear is mostly unchanged, though the LED taillights are redesigned and the tailpipes enlarged to a fat 3.5 inches. The 2020 M Sport Package has a more aggressive aerodynamics package with a redone front bumper, side skirts, wheel arch trim and rear bumper. New wheel designs and three new colors round out the appearance changes.
Inside, the interior gets a new electronic shifter and some new contrast stitching. There also is a new LED two-tone X1 “welcome projection” that greets you when you open the door. An 8.8-inch multimedia display with navigation and Apple CarPlay compatibility (with subscription) — but no Android Auto — carry over.
Also carrying over are the mechanicals, with a 228-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 258 pounds-feet of torque from 1,450 rpm. It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes in front- or all-wheel drive. BMW says the transmission gear ratios have been revised for better performance, with zero-to-60-mph acceleration now in 6.3 seconds for the all-wheel-drive X1 xDrive28i and 6.6 seconds for the X1 sDrive28i.
