VW ID. Space Vizzion Concept: ‘Crossover of Tomorrow’ Is Truly a Volks-Wagon

As Volkswagen continues to make the shift toward an electrified vehicle lineup, here come sketches of its ID. Space Vizzion concept ahead of its official debut at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. The German automaker calls the all-electric concept “a crossover of tomorrow that combines the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV.” So: It’s a big, all-electric station wagon.

Making wagons popular in the U.S. is the sworn duty of automotive journalists everywhere despite the body style’s waning (waned, really) popularity among car shoppers in the face of a flood of SUVs and crossovers — which makes it my obligation to point out that this is a wagon. That lack of popularity also means Volkswagen won’t call the ID. Space Vizzion a wagon or even mention the term when talking about the car, even if it very much looks like one.

What VW will say about the concept is that it will be built on the automaker’s MEB electric vehicle platform and should have a range of about 300 miles according to EPA ratings. It will also feature an all-digital cockpit and sustainable interior materials, such as the brand’s AppleSkin vegan leather alternative.

And concept though the ID. Space Vizzion may be, VW promises that a production version is coming in 2021, with “different versions” available in North America, Europe and China.
