Expert 2019 Audi A5 review

Our expert's take
By Cars.com Editors
Full article

What Is the 2019 Audi A5?

The Audi A5 and its siblings were redesigned for 2018 and are derived from the A4 sedan. They’re offered in three body styles, all with standard all-wheel drive. The A5 and S5 come in coupe, convertible and four-door hatchback (Sportback) body styles; the high-performance RS5 comes in coupe and Sportback body styles.

A5 models have a 248-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that works with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The S5 has a 349-hp, turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and an eight-speed automatic. The RS5, meanwhile, gets a 444-hp, turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6 and an eight-speed automatic. Competitors include the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and Infiniti Q60.

What’s New on the 2019 Audi A5?

Park assist is now standard on Prestige models, and a new Black Optic Plus Package is available on the A5 coupe and Sportback with black exterior and interior trim, a sport suspension, 19-inch wheels and summer tires. The RS5 gains a Sportback model, and the Virtual Cockpit and MMI navigation systems are now standard. New Alu Optic and Black Optic packages for the RS5 add 20-inch forged wheels, plus carbon-fiber and gloss-black exterior trim.

What Features in the 2019 Audi A5 Are Most Important?

This lineup provides capable handling in different weather conditions with its standard all-wheel drive, but Audi also offers a variety of suspension options, including an adaptive suspension and sport (meaning stiffer) setup, depending on the model.

The available Virtual Cockpit has a 12.3-inch configurable display that shows high-quality graphics ranging from traditional analog gauges to a full-width navigation display. Standard safety features include Audi Pre Sense City, which can detect a collision and automatically apply the brakes. Blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning are available.

Should I Buy the 2019 Audi A5?

There are many things to like about this line of cars — styling, performance, interior quality, and features such as Virtual Cockpit. However, it's short on practicality, with a tight backseat that's short on headroom. Many cars that cost around $50,000 leave us expecting more for that much money, but the A5 and its siblings provide enough of a driving and luxury experience to warrant strong consideration.

  • Control

Excellent handling vehicle, very comfortable providing more room than A4. Car has extreme control and brakes on a dime. Definitely would recommend on the open road with music turned up.

  • So far so good

I’ve only had this car for a few days. I’m in love with it. Only 13000 miles. Still has that new car smell 😁. The ride is great! As I stated earlier I’m a return customer. I previously owned a Mercedes that I purchased from you guys. I got excellent service with it. Had no complaints. The car was seven years old when I traded it. And only a bit over 40000 miles on it.

  • Very happy with car. Economy, style, performance.

The car has incredible styling. It offers several driver selections: automatic, manual, sport selection in automatic. It has great fuel economy, and yet has excellent performance.

  • Like Driving in a Dream

This Quattro drives better than any car I've owned. I had the Audi A3 (2015) convertible, this Audi A5 convertible was an upgrade and I'm completely in love with it. The all-wheel drive is amazing, the handling is tight and precision, the back seats are much more roomier than the A3, my kids love it. All-around incredible vehicle.

  • Excellent vehicle

Sporty, not necessarily hard core sports car, but probably the sportiest model in the range. Really lusted after the S5 sportback, but couldn’t justify the premium cost. Really haven’t missed the extra grunt. Plenty quick and fast enough to really push limits. Great breaks and handling. The premium plus trim is the sweet spot. The sport back styling is the slickest of any of the audi designs

  • Form Meets Function at the Intersection of Awesome

The 2019 Audi A5 Coupe is everything I could hope to want and then some. It is amazingly comfortable - especially compared to its rival classmates (BMW 4-series, MBZ C300), has absolutely amazing performance for a 4-cylinder, and has more technology than even I know what to do with and that's saying something. As a San Francisco Bay Area resident, being able to go up a hill without worrying and getting away from other poor drivers is crucial to driving on local roads and highways whether you are just commuting or for more recreational driving. Thanks to the surprisingly powerful twin-turbo four-cylinder engine and standard equipment Quattro drive in all A5 models, this car handles hills, curves, and evasive maneuvers like a dream. I feel that the combination of specs and features found on this specific model exceed the commensurate offerings from BMW and MBZ at the same price point. So is it all ice cream and Skittles? No. The parking assist feature is ... temperamental at best. The adaptive cruise control is, every once in a while, a bit TOO adaptive for its own good, and the MMI interface screams out for a touch screen (hint: 2020 model year has them) because the knob/touch pad interface in a car doesn't make a ton of sense. Does any of that equal a reason to hesitate on this car? Absolutely not! Over the last 30 years, I have owned American and Japanese cars. I have never owned an Audi before, was not a huge fan or detractor of the brand, and really never pictured myself as an Audi owner ever. Now I know I will be an Audi owner for life! Note: I have only owned the car for three weeks, which is not enough time to evaluate its specific reliability, but my research into the A5 series over the past five years indicates that it's reliability, repair, and recall records are extremely clean, which is why I have rated the car's reliability as such.

  • Sharp looking Sport back is useful for cargo.

Excellent performance from the 2.0 Engine and the 7 Speed dual clutch transmission shifts so crisp. Ride and handling matches the class you expect for such a fine car. Great MPG's too. This car with the Sportback body looks the best, I get looks all the time.

  • Lots of Power with comfort

This car met my needs with performance, quick pick up, smooth drive, lumbar support, great interface. The hatchback is perfect because if I need to transport any large items, the back seats fold down for more storage space. The sunroof also has a screen which makes driving with it open more enjoyable.
