2005 F150 is Sweet

Recently purchased a 2005 extended-cab short box (5.5') Lariat 4x4 F150 and couldn't be happier with it. Interior room is awesome - I've been waiting for a vehicle that I don't feel cramped in, and this is it! Leather bench seat is extremely comfortable. The console shifter in some trucks looks great, but I went with a column shifter and flip-up arm-rest seat so I could get six in it if I need to. My two teenage daughers love riding in the back seat. My wife also loves riding in it because of all the room and how high up you sit. Can't believe how quiet it is inside - it sounds/feels like a luxury sedan. Engine sounds great - although there is a bit of valve-train clatter at startup that seems to be relatively common with the 5.4L 3V. Went with the short-box to keep down the length and am happy I did. It's a big truck and I think it manuvers better without the extra foot of bed. I also like the look of it this way - although I suspect some might not. In general, I was very impressed that the 2004MY+ trucks I looked at had very little underbody rust. I looked at a couple Ram's and they both had solid rust covering everything on the underbody. Fuel economy is probably the only thing that I wish was a bit different. I get 13-14mpg driving around town and 17mph highway (and I baby it a bit). I've got the 3.73 axle ratio and 18" tires which will be good for pulling, but hurts in the FE area. Oh well, that's what you get with a truck, right? Purchased from a private seller - definitely the way to go versus some high priced dealerships. CARS.COM was very helpful in finding sellers. Wouldn't change a thing!

Good truck if maintained.

I have a F150 HD with 153,000 miles on it and manage a fleet of Ford trucks. Have F150's with almost 300,000 miles on them in the fleet. 4.6 good motor 5.4 ok motor Issues, 5.4 3 valve motor must be maintained regularly. Change spark plugs every 50,000 Oil changes with partial synthetic good filter. If the check engine light comes on take it in! Cam phaser is at the end of the oiling system and can get clogged easily. When they gum up it can cause the timing to be off enough to allow the valves to strike the piston. Transmission also must have regular maintenance. Most failures due to clogged oil cooler. Wheel wobbles Due to rotors being pulled off and turned. Ford recommends having them turned on the vehicle or replaced. Bearings cannot be retightened. This is not your grandpas Ford. They are more like a Mercedes. Cost more to maintain, Parts must be replaced per recommended interval. If it breaks it will cost you $$$. Gets better mileage. If you want a bullet proof truck you will have to find a mid-90?s or older Ford or Chevy.

180,000 miles!

I bought my XLT 4.6L super cab in 2004.5 when they changed the body style. To date the only issue I had was a bad pulley that was replaced within warranty as well as a rattle in my AC fan. My truck has towed a camper from AZ to Yellowstone and back and all over Az. While the 4.6 is weaker than the 5.4 it still tows nice (spark plug replacement is much cheaper too). I took it to a dealership for a checkup and I got green lights all around. Only minor things that have broke are auto window motor on two doors, and the 3rd break light seal seems to wear out and let the water in but online tips have fixed that. Overall super satisfied with my purchase. I think ill put on another 100,000 miles before I get another vehicle, most likely another f 150!

90k and still going...

I have an 04 f150 fx4 that I bought new and now have 90k on it....other than tires and brakes...i have had only a few minor problems. I've had a window motor go out. I had a leak in the third brake light...but ordered a replacement on amazon....two minute fix. I would recommend replacing the brake light every 4-6 years to avoid leaks. I also had a plugged air conditioner drain...also a cheap fix. Will keep this truck forever. My son is now driving it.

Read this before you buy a Ford F-150.

I've owned 24 vehicles to date including all sorts of cars, trucks and vans. Never have I had so many issues in such a short time as with this...my first Ford product. I bought my F-150 with 85k miles on it from a reputable dealership. Luckily for me this meant it came with a 3 month warranty. The truck has been back to the dealership for service at least 6 times and is in fact going back again tomorrow (only 1 week left on warranty). I have the 5.4 Triton 3V. First problem was random misfires. This was resolved by replacing all spark plugs and spark plug boots. If not for warranty this would have cost me $600. Steering wheel shimmy at 65 mph is the ongoing problem as is a serious engine knocking sound. So far the dealership has failed to resolve either of these issues. The wheel shimmy is a mystery that has eluded Ford F-150 owners for years now so I've decided to live with it. The engine knock is most likely coming from the CAM PHASER. Remember that term because if you buy a 2004+ Ford truck you WILL have problems with this. I'm currently battling my dealership to have them replace the cam phaser under warranty. Other problems were a clunking driveshaft under acceleration and an exhaust leak. I fear my catalytic converter may be damaged from those scary misfires. I found the original owner and now have over $5000 in receipts for other repairs (spark plugs included). All 4 window regulators were replaced at $400 a pop. Great looking truck, but it lacks power and I'm probably going to trade it for a Chevy HD before I attempt towing anything next season.

Can't Go the Distance

Good vehicle, but transmission failed at ~97,000 miles. Used it for getting around; no towing or excess wear & tear on tranny. What a huge disappointment! Won't buy Ford F-150 for a LONG time....just bought a 2011 Ram 1500--look for my review on that one!

F15 supercab 4x4 review

I switched from a chevy Z71 to this XLT with about 100,000 miles. The acceleration is noticeably slower in the Ford and I've noticed a sound from the rearend when making turns from a stop. Gas mileage is also worse. I'm relatively conservative and I get no more than 11mpg city and 14 highway with only slightly larger than stock tires. This one has the diesel sound that is common in 04-06 (I think) 5.4l Ford engines. I had the spark plugs changed. That was almost $400. They break easily. It is a great looking truck and I've had no serious issues in the 1,500 miles i've driven it but before you buy a Ford 4x4 from this time period, know you will get really bad mileage. Know that if you need a spark plug change it WILL cost you big bucks. Know what the diesel sound is and how much it might cost. Factor all this in your decision. Anyone wanna buy mine? just kidding.

Great Truck

I used to have this truck and I miss it very much! I love the hard leather that cover the seats! It is a great deal for me because I work in construction business and I don't have to be worry about the seat if get dirty or not! It is very comfy as well!
