OK car overall but questionable quality

Got it used with 9k miles at the end of 2017 . It now only has 20000 miles so I have not used it much. So far it has been reliable but with a few concerns/issues Mine is a 2017 Elantra Limited Black/Beige with a 2.0 engine. 1) it has engine knock under load and this concerns me for many reasons. But the main reason is that the quality of the engine built is now questionable for me. This happens rarely but noticeable enough to change my driving habit to not put much load on the engine. This adds frustration to what is an already sluggish engine. 2) right mirror stopped working 3) right front door latch broke causing the door not to open occasionally 4) driver seat frame became loose. Possible broken rivets. Seat bottom would move slightly but enough to freak me out in turns. 5) door interior arm rest plastic paint is chipping away looking ugly. The above may not be a big deal but I really question the quality especially after issues with Hyundai has had with engines in the past. At this point I am planning to just drive till it dies but have my doubts it l will last like a Honda or Toyota. BTW: The engine oil change frequency is much more frequent than for a similar car in the compact segment. So you should consider that as well since it is added maintenance cost.

Not bad for the money

The car is serving its purpose very well. I don't think I could have done better. And it drives well for it to be what it is.

I love driving this car

This car met 100% of my wish list. Great gas mileage, heated seats, room for 5 and it’s got get up an go! For my commute, it’s the perfect ride.

Nice car

The gas tank is smaller than my Toyota but the ride is smooth. The seats are comfortable. I just wished I had a manual for my car. I had it tuned up at the Hyundai Dealership but it seems to do a pull back thing or shimmy business at times.

Almost died from front air bag issue

I had a head-on crash in March of 2019 when I owned this vehicle. I was stopped in the center lane waiting for traffic to clear so I could make a left-hand turn. Another vehicle coming from the opposite direction & speeding got in the center lane too early to make his left-hand turn & hit my car head on. My vehicle was pushed back about 100 feet. There was nothing left of my car in front of the front tires, all of it dragging from the front of the other car. The front airbag only inflated to the size of a basketball around the lower part of my body. Exterior vehicle police photos confirm no inflated or deflated air bags visible in their photos of my car, but were clearly visible in photos of the other car. Thus my chest hit the steering wheel violently, splitting my sternum in half. I was hospitalized for 5 days & flat on my back at home for many weeks, needing home health care. This car may be pretty but it definitely was not safe for me. The lawyers told me that no lawyer will take a case against an auto manufacturer for an auto defect any more because their lawyers tie it up in court for many years.
