Expert 2003 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class review

our expert's take

Vehicle Overview
Several enhancements are likely for the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class coupe, but details have not yet been released. Essentially, the CL-Class is a two-door equivalent of the company’s high-end, ultra-luxury full-size S-Class sedan.

Mercedes-Benz launched the CL500 for the 2000 model year; it is equipped with a 302-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8 engine. A CL600 coupe with V-12 power and the performance-oriented CL55 AMG soon followed. To save fuel, the V-12 engine can deactivate half of its cylinders. A 493-hp, supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 powers the high-performance CL55 AMG.

Distronic Adaptive Cruise Control and Parktronic parking assist are optional features. This radar-based system adjusts the car’s speed automatically to maintain a preset distance behind the vehicle ahead. A Keyless Go option permits the driver to start the car without inserting a key. Designo editions and a sport package are also available.

Exterior
The styling themes for these two-door models echo the appearance of the S-Class sedan, and the German automaker claims the CL-Class “recalls the glorious Mercedes coupes of the past.” Flowing fenders, four oval headlights, a smaller sloped grille that displays the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star emblem, and a wraparound back window help give the CL-Class a personality all of its own. Befitting its lofty-performance status, the CL55 AMG coupe has aerodynamic body trim, a firmer-than-usual suspension and 18-inch wheels.

All CL-Class coupes have Active Body Control, which is an active suspension with electronic controls that continuously adjust firmness to eliminate body roll and pitch during cornering, acceleration and braking. Xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights include heated wipers and washers. A power moonroof is standard.

Interior
Unlike Mercedes-Benz sedans that seat five occupants, the CL-Class coupes are built with two bucketlike rear seats to accommodate four passengers. The CL600 has unique Nappa leather upholstery and either burl walnut or chestnut interior trim.

A standard satellite-based navigation system has a touchscreen integrated into the dashboard. An SOS button is available for automatic emergency calling and is tied to the Tele Aid system, which also offers such services as travel reservations and sports and entertainment ticket purchases. Voice-activation operates the Bose audio system. An InfoServices option can deliver customized news headlines, stock quotes and other services via a wireless Internet connection.

Under the Hood
Three engines are available in the CL-Class. A 302-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 goes into the CL500. The CL600 employs a turbocharged 5.5-liter V-12 that generates 493 hp, and a 493-hp, supercharged 5.5-liter V-8 powers the potent CL55 AMG, which Mercedes bills as the “performance showcase.” The CL500 and CL600 work with a five-speed Touch Shift automatic transmission, and the CL55 AMG is equipped a five-speed SpeedShift automatic gearbox. Both the Touch Shift and SpeedShift versions permit manually selected gear changes when desired. The automaker claims that the CL500 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.

Safety
Door-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats, curtain-type airbags that deploy from above the side windows to protect occupants’ heads, and rear side-impact airbags that protect the torsos of backseat occupants are standard. The front passenger’s airbag deploys at one of two levels depending on the degree of impact. Antilock brakes, traction control and an electronic stability system are also standard.

  • Avoid at all cost.

Avoid at all cost.. believe me I owned one that I cherished dearly but constant headaches with the hydraulic system..Extremely expensive to fix.. I sold mine for $500 cash.. still parked at the dealer.. cause no one wants to go to that maintenance nightmare.. beautiful car though..you are being warned..go for an airmatic system when buying a Benz..

  • The CL 55 AMG is the best car I have ever owned

The 2003 Mercedes Benz CL 55 AMG is without a doubt the finest car I have ever driven. The fact that I own one is just the icing on top of the cake. I have driven some of the finest cars ever built including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, Rolls Royce, Bentley, and of course, Mercedes Benz. In addition to this CL 55 AMG, I also have a CLK 550 cabriolet. In my mind the CL 55 AMG is the finest car I have ever driven. It has the right combination of luxury and sportiness that I find lacking in every other car in this spectrum. If I want to drive it hard, through some twisting turns, it responds beautifully. If I want to go fast, in a straight line, it handles that with ease. And if I choose to go down the freeway relaxing at 80 mph, it does that with equal aplomb. Overall, the car is simply everything I could want in a car, without the pain of spending the original sticker price of $124,000.

  • unbelievable car

I purchased a CL55 AMG in October 2016. It only has 69,000 miles looks and drives like no other car. The car is solid and rides as smooth as anything I have driven. The only problem so far is the check engine light comes on but is related to a gas sensor, it goes off when I fill the tank up so no big deal. This car is a a rocket and looks great, comments have been exceptional. Truly a fun car to drive and i love the design. I plan on keeping this one for a long time.

  • UNBELIEVABLE MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ive had this car for 3 years now, it hasnt had any issues and runs like a dream! the speed of this car (especially considering the size) is astounding! the v12 is smooth as glass on the highway but press that gas pedal and you fly like a rocket! the features are great and more advanced still than most cars on the road today even. I have still yet to find fault with it!

  • excellent car - performance, styling & reliablity

This is my 3rd MBZ, 1981 300SD, 1995 S600 coupe and 2003 CL 55. I purchased used in June '04 w/5000 miles and I have had zero problems with 68,000 miles currently. I use as a daily driver & get reasonable mileage 17-19 MPG, more on Hwy driving when I use it reasonably - less when driven aggressively. I have all the equipment except parking aid & audio hands free communication which I miss. I love everything about the vehicle except replacing tires which need replacing every 15K to 18K miles. The F-1 type shifting is very good and my first trip was up the California Coast to on Hwy 1 to a Laguna Seca for a racing school, the entire experience was outstanding. This car is an excellent value used for what is really the near the top of the line for this type of performance vehicle.

  • A superb car

This is the best car I have ever owned and driven. Even at high speeds (150 mph plus), the car has an instinct ,beyond any other vehicle I have owned, to stay on the tarmac. The handling is superb and it is also a forgiving car for the less experienced. As for the look, this is a sexy, but classy car that turns heads where ever it is driven. Be prepared to visit the gas station frequently, but the upside is the pure enjoyment of simply a superb machine. The only downside with this car is that you get the sports car crowd wanting to race you all the time.
