Vehicle Overview
The SL-Class retractable-hardtop roadster competes in the upper-crust sport-luxury market with the likes of the Cadillac XLR and Jaguar XK convertible.

Three models return: the V-8-powered SL550, the performance-oriented SL63 AMG with a twin-turbocharged V-8 and the SL65 AMG with a twin-turbo V-12.

New for 2011
All models receive an advanced tire pressure monitoring system, HD radio and Sirius traffic info. In addition, the SL comes with “mbrace,” a new telematics system with features such as the ability to connect to the car with a smartphone to lock and unlock doors.

Mercedes is offering 100 SL550 Night Edition models with matte-finish black paint; 19-inch AMG wheels with a two-tone, high-gloss finish; silver front brake calipers; and interior accents.

The V-12-powered SL600 has been discontinued.

Exterior
The front is characterized by angular headlights that are a bit sinister, a larger grille bisected by a single, bold cross-member and a large Mercedes star logo. The hood is domed and creased to carry the line from those shapes. An optional Intelligent Light System has five modes for different driving situations. In addition to the more common active (swiveling) and cornering light modes are Country mode, Motorway mode and enhanced fog lamps.

  • Power retractable hardtop
  • Standard 18-inch alloy wheels on SL550
  • Standard 19-inch alloy wheels on SL63 and SL65
  • Standard bi-xenon headlights
  • Optional Intelligent Light System

Interior
The SL has leather-trimmed seats for two and a long list of comfort and convenience features to justify its lofty price, including the Comand system. Comand has an optional Universal Consumer Interface — a port that accepts portable music players and flash memory and controls them through the stereo, complete with onscreen menus. Bluetooth phone functionality and the option of watching DVDs on the screen (when the car is parked) are also added.

An interesting option is Airscarf, two small fans incorporated into each head restraint that blow warm air at the occupant’s neck. Mercedes says the objective is to “extend the open-air driving season.”

  • “Mbrace” telematics system
  • Voice-activated Comand system with 8-inch dash screen and center console control knob
  • Beverage cooler in glove box
  • 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system

Under the Hood
The SL550 has a 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8. The SL63 AMG’s 6.2-liter V-8 makes 518 hp, and the SL65 AMG’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 generates 604 hp. All versions are rear-wheel drive.

  • Seven-speed automatic transmission (SL550, SL63)
  • Five-speed automatic (SL65)
  • Standard active suspension system (Active Body Control)
  • Optional Direct Steer system

Safety
The SL-Class’ standard safety features include:

  • All-disc antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
  • Side-impact airbags
  • Driver’s side knee airbag
  • Popup roll bar
  • Active head restraints

  • Loved this car. Great handling, Super looks

Great car, but expensive to own and maintain. Style is superb, every conceivable option and feature. Problems with computer suspension system, body hardware and cracks in wheels.

  • Not very comfy at 6'1

I got my dream car! Finally can afford it after 5 years of depreciation! It's definitely the best convertible out there, if driven 1-2 hours at a time. Anything more than that would give me back pain. The seats are not very comfortable, and they do not lean back enough when at farthest setting from steering wheel (I've got long legs). Everything else about this car is almost perfect! The interior could be improved also, but who cares with such a sexy exterior!

  • SL 63 -- Truly a Gentlemans supercar

2011 SL63-- when you are looking for a supercar, but dont want the stiff ride that rattles your teeth, the SL63 is the answer. 518hp, paddle shift, unbelievable get up and go, an exhaust note that will stop your heart, and all this with heated, cooled, and massage seats. Oh, did I mention an warm air scarf that blows heat on your neck on those cold days should you want the top down. All the creature comforts of a luxury car, but the absolute heart of a top end sports car. A blast to drive, reliable, and truly a grand touring hard top convertible that you can drive for hours and hours.

  • This is a GT, not a sports car

This car is a great cruiser with plenty of power and handling to keep it fun. If you are looking for a lively sports car, buy a Porsche, but if you are looking for a fantastic luxury sports convertible, there is no better car. This car is absolutely packed with every option you can image to make you drive pleasant. With the top down at 80mph and the windows up, there is virtually no wind in the cockpit. On cool nights, turn on the airscarf to blow warm air on your neck. The driving experience is impressive. The suspension system creates the illusion of a much lighter car when needed, but gives you that rock solid, heavy Mercedes ride always. This is no light weight machine. The V8 is smooth, but not chest-pressingly quick. Think locomotive, rather than racecar. That is not to say it is slow, but in this day and age of twin turbos, the normally aspirated SL is much more linear in the way it gets to 100mph. All that said, there are some things that Mercedes forgot in 2011. Generally speaking, the interface that houses the navigation system, radio, phone, etc is difficult and not intuitive. As well, the phone interface is maddening and the mic is noise sensitive (not a great feature in a convertible). Lastly, the gas mileage is measured in feet not miles (I average 14.7mpg to work). But, in a car that automatically turns on the air conditioned seats when you remotely put the top down and is powered by a creamy V8 mounted on a truly mind-blowing suspension, the minus fall away pretty fast. After all, this is a Mercedes SL.

  • M.B. SL550

This car looks and handles beautifully. Unfortunately what M.B. refers to as "safety features" are for the companies safety and not the car owners. The convenience features are about the most inconvenient of any car I've ever owned and the navigation system would make a very expensive paper weight.
