Does anything you ask of it
I've had my '03 V8 4WD 4Runner for 3 years now and have put 45k miles on it for a total of 90k. I tow a 2000 lb boat/trailer about 20% of the time and do not even notice it's there from a performance standpoint. MPG dips to an average around 15 with any towing, most of which is highway miles, and I get 18 mpg on the average tank without any towing. The max MPG I've gotten with any one tank is 20.2. Also it'll take 24.5 gallons of gas when it's bone dry, but I wouldn't suggest letting it get quite that low, based on personal experience. The ride is comfortable for an SUV even with Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor A/T tires and (knock on wood) I have yet to have any significant mechanical or other issues. I bought this vehicle to tow my boat, have space for the dog and 5 people when necessary, and get me anywhere on or off road I need to be. So far I have no regrets and would recommend it to anyone.

Best SUV for the money 2003 Limited 4X4
I have owned several SUV's prior to this one, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Isuzu Rodeo and prior generation 4Runner. I would never buy another suv. Handles well, tow's my 20' boat with ease. Great in snow full time four wheel drive system works great. Great vehicle for everyday use, I have 90,000 miles now, just did the major tune up and other than brakes nothing on this vehicle has broken. Take it off roading about once a month, has never gotten stuck. Only downside is gas mileage i have the V8 and average about 13mpg city and 17mpg highway. I will trade this one in for another one when Toyota comes out with the next generation 4Runner. You can buy a less expensive suv but you will pay for it in the long run.

Great SUV to own
I've owned a Nissan Pathfinder, and the Pathfinder doesn't hold a candle to the 4Runner! The Pathfinder, is a very good vehicle... but the 4Runner is an all around better bang for your buck SUV. I was happy with my Pathfinder, but find myself a bit sad that I didn't step up to the plate and sent a little bit more for a MUCH, MUCH better SUV.

Dependable, but rides horribly
V6 SR5 4WD model. First, the bad news> MPG has dropped from 21 when new to 19 HWY nowadays. Front suspension too stiff, so much that on irregular pavement it can catch air and rebound on a different track. The ride is bouncy on anything but smooth pavement, resulting in constant steering input. Vehicle is also difficult to track in a straight line, and is blown around easily in windy conditions. The interior is noisy at highway speeds. Window switches not lit for nighttime use. No ashtray. HVAC controls are push button instead of dials. The tilt wheel in the position I like it blocks the speedometer at highway speeds. The windshield, which easily cracks, has been repaired 3 times for rock hits. Down time has been 4 days for warranty items. No non-warranty issues. With few exceptions, I really like the interior. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the dash, doors, headliner, and flooring meld well together. The glove box, doors, and center console all offer storage space. The V6 has plenty of power. The 4WD can be put into an 'unlocked' mode giving the same performance as AWD (all wheel drive). The brakes and stability control are excellent, with zero fade. The radio, a base model, does the job. The 4Runner has never failed me in adverse conditions. Except for the ride quality and road noise, I like the vehicle. But because of these reasons, if I was looking to buy today, I would not go with the 4Runner.
