1998 Toyota Tacoma

In September of 2006 we purchased a brand new Toyota Camry Hybrid. Up until 4 weeks ago we enjoyed everything about the car. We began to hear a strange noise coming from the front end when turning left or right from a parked position. After 3 visits to the dealership we were informed of a Toyota alert to the dealership regarding a faulty steering shaft. The whole unit needs to be replaced. If you are a Camry Hybrid owner and are experiancing this front end noise have it checked out. Fortunatly we are still under warrenty ,otherwise the cost might have been rather prohibitive.

Great Car! No Regrets!

Purchased new in September 2007 and no regrets. If you only drive two miles to work and two miles home, chances are your mileage will be lower, but when you take longer drives, I've received anywhere from 38 to 42 mpg on the freeway, depending on the number of hills you negotiate. Toyota products have proven their dependability and this model comes through. Yes the trunk space is smaller and the navigation system has some voice recognition issues, but I challenge anyone to find a car that will have everything perfect. I higly recommend this car if you're looking for dependibility, mileage and value. Too bad the IRS didn't maintain the tax break of $2,600 I enjoyed. It added to the value of the vehicle.

Quite a luxury car

What a great car! I'm really happy with a purchase. A bit expensive for a non-luxury brand, but i got all the options, all of them and whenever I get in, i realize that it really feels like a luxury car. Only two concerns: 1. City milage is extremely hard to maintain. In fact, in the winter i get 33 mpg on average, summer 38-40 if i try really hard. However, the manual claims it should be driven as a regular car. I wish there would be a way to start it off on electric only (I've seem some CA sites modding the Priuses) 2. Navigation system. The voice recognition is not the greatest (try saying in Milwaukee into it), but I don't mind. What I mind is that it won't let you use the screen to input addresses while in motion. So if you are on a toll road and need to find the right exit, should your plans suddenly change, you are screwed, you need to stop. I understand that it's a safety feature, but i wish it could see that there is a passenger in the car and enable the manual input. Other than these two I have no complaints absolutely.

Everything to love in a car

This car has all I need and more to love...great acceleration, even with the AC on in Phoenix 115 degree heat, and still averaging 37 mpg with the AC running and keeping me happy and cool. This Fall so far getting 40+ mpg. I love verything about this car...don't need a big trunk space. Feels good to be doing the right thing for the environment too.

Glad to be green

I decided to dump the pickup truck, go green and buy a hybrid after seeing Al Gore's movie, "An incovenient truth." Being a teacher and a former auto mechanic, I spent a lot of time researching the Civic, Accord and Prius. Drive 'em. Compared to the Civic hybrid and the Prius, the Camry is faster, quieter, and has a better ride. You can't buy a new Accord hybrid any more. Oddly enough, I was set to buy the Prius when I spotted the Camry. I wasn't in the car for two minutes and the decision was made. The ride? Very hard to tell the difference from the Lexus I tested. Now that gas prices are headed for the moon, I laugh every time I cruise by the gas station, enjoying a consistant around town average of 38 to 41 mpg. Though most traffic won't allow this, the car will get an honest to goodness 48 mpg all day if I keep it at a steady 50 mph. It's sooo quiet inside, every inch of the car oozes quality. I plug in an iPod and WHAT A STEREO!!! One of my biggest concerns was the warranty and the service life of the batteries. Not to worry, I have a lifetime warranty (thanks Sun Toyota) on the powertrain and reports of early model Prius batteries still going strong after 200,000 miles are comforting. Toyota did their homework, this hybrid technology isn't something new. Telescoping tilt steering, comfy power seat, no rattles anywhere, what more can I say? I'm debating about the biggest kick: is it listening to the electric motor spool up when cruising at speeds under 42 mph or noticing that the disk brakes seem to have zero wear on them due to the fact that if I drive it carefully, the regenerative braking system does almost all the stopping? Seems like people are constantly asking me about it. I save about $105.00 a month (1000 miles) compared to my old pick up. Not to mention the fact that this American is DOING something about foreign oil dependancy and global warming. Negatives? OK, the trunk is limited. If you want trunk space, buy a gas hog; every car lot in town would love to sell you one. Now ask yourself this question: where do you think gas prices will be in 5 years? Why not do yourself and your country a favor and go out and buy one?

I could sell these cars!

I'm on my fourth tank of gas and am averaging 41 mpg combined. I drive her gently and use the good acceleration only when necessary. It takes the edge off of sitting in Atlanta traffic when I see I'm not using any gas. I love going 600 miles between visits to the gas station. All the safety features are reassuring, too. Just wish I had bought one sooner!

A disapointment

I purchased the car for it's advertised fuel economy but have been disappointed in the city fuel consumption. We are getting from 25 mpg to 31 mpg. On the otherhand the highway mileage is quite good: Between 41 and 38.

the future of internal combustion cars

once you have driven hybrid which shuts off if stopped, all other type of vehicles seem wasteful. very quiet ... it "sneaks-up" on pedestrians. interior parts "squeak" going over bumps. great 4 door everyday go-to-work car. not cheap.

Very good mileage

Very good value, would like to always start on electric rather than gas engine. Comfort is very good, really like telescoping steering wheel.

A nice car you can feel good about driving.

I love to drive this car. Everybody does. My 22 yr old son's goal is to maximize gas mileage (rather than the normal stuff a 22 yr old would do while driving). He got 49 mpg driving around Santa Fe all day. It looks good, fun to drive, and we can afford to drive it. I did the math and will argue with the na sayers about the feasibility of hybrid cars from a strictly cost effective point of view. What I read says they aren't a good value but my calculations disagree, especially when you consider what I hope will be a higher trade in value if you don't wait too long to sell. I got mine while good tax incentives were still in place; the feds need to help us out by reviving that policy.
