Great fun to price ratio
This car is a lot of fun to drive and offers great value for <$24K. Base version has everything you need (heated seats, Android Auto). Sound can be improved using a $300 sub/amplifier from the dealer. It's very comfortable (compared to an STI) and also ok to drive in the winter (much better than rear wheel drive). To me this is the best car under $40K if rear wheel drive is an issue.

Love my GTI!
This car is so much fun to drive, and manages to get great fuel economy at the same time! Large hatch area once the seats are folded down, easy to transport large items. Has android auto and apple carplay, and all the modern amenities

Great Value
Great power, beautiful exhaust note, roomy interior. Love this car. I'm a bigger guy, about 6 foot, 280 and i am able to sit in the driver seat, leave it as is and jump in the back seat and have plenty of leg room. No knees scraping the back of the seat, easy to get in an out with out feeling cramped. Power is better than i had thought it would be, definitely feels like more power than is advertised. Apple carplay is great, basically gives you nav without paying for the upgrade. Also can use pandora, spotify, as well as other apps, being able to have Siri read you text messages is a huge plus especially with California's new cell phone laws. Havent had the car for too long yet so i cant speak about durability over time but i do have the warranty for anything that comes up. 3yr/36k basic warranty and 5yr/50000 powertrain.

I Love Volkswagen's.
Its a good thing they make a great car. It's why they can pull off a cheat and brush themselves off! GTI = SMILE primary use is committing but I had to select having fun. Owned a 2012 VW, drove for 75000 miles, Performed the maintenance, replaced the tires, replaced the horn, That is it!

So far, Great!
I recently purchased a GTI Autobahn with performance package and 6 speed manual. It is a blast to drive! I am still learning about all of the infotainment system features, but this things is great to drive. It makes any drive more exciting with its acceleration and handling. Best part is, it is practical, safe, and (knock on wood) reliable.

If you could only have one car....
...and could not afford the Golf R (in order to get AWD) this would be it. This is a surprisingly long-legged and comfortable Grand Tourer based on a very solid platform. In Europe, there are three models of GTI -- the Up! which is a tiny little car, the Polo which is about the size a Golf was years go, and the Golf. The formula is the same. Take the engine from the next-size up car, add sporty suspension and a few good looks and voila! There's nothing tuned-to-the-edge about it like some cars in this segment. The 2.0 in the Golf is capable of so much more that I really have no worries about it being durable over time. This is a roomy, comfy, practical (I got the 4-door Sport with a manual) car that is fun to push a little when the time comes after the break-in period. I got the super-duper Platinum warranty so I don't have to worry about much as far as reliability so it's just relax, smile, and drive. Works for me.
