This Is THE WORST Car I Have Ever Owned.

I bought a pre-owned, non-certified 2005 Jetta GLI back on 9/15/07. It's a fun car to drive and it handles very well when it isn't falling apart. Over the course of the last 3 1/2 years of having this car, it has cost me over $8,700 in repairs. This figure does not include "wear and tear" repairs or regular maintenance. It has stranded me on many occasions. I am upside down in the car loan by over $15,000 (I financed some previous things into this current loan). Having had three VW Passats prior to this Jetta, I thought the Jetta would be equally reliable. I planned on paying this car off and driving it until the wheels fell off which is why I went forward with the terms of the loan. It seems that the only thing that HASN'T happened YET are the wheels falling off. It came close once when a rear wheel hub and bearing went out. I trusted the dealership and the product. I was a loyal, banner waving VW customer. As of last week, gas vapors began blowing in through the heater vents filling the car with dangerous, combustible fumes. Two weeks prior to this, I sunk another $500 into this car to repair a leaky head gasket and the seventh coolant leak. This might explain the LOUSY gas mileage this car gets. I haven't even mentioned the host of electrical problems it has. Driving a car that is unsafe is unacceptable for ANYONE. I am a mobile personal trainer and need a quality car to get me through my route. I'm over it. I just purchased a certified pre-owned Scion XD. I am absolutely THRILLED with it. On the other hand, I am mortified that I am now responsible to pay for this worthless Jetta with such an extensive balance left on the loan. The bottom line, I hate the VW Jetta GLI. I hope those of you who drive one have a better, happier story than I do.

Has quirks but really great car

I bought this car new and while I had some recall issues I now have almost 120k on it and beside wear items the only issue that crops up are bulb burn outs and glow plugs. This is my 2nd jetta TDI and its feels no different then when it had 60k or 20k. Be prepared for some quirks for the first 15k and a long break-in period (20-30k) before you get the really good MPG you hear about. As much as I'd love to get in a new one....mine's doing too well not to keep it.

Heartbreaker

I bought a 2005 GLS TDI new from the dealer. To be completely honest, I love this car which is exactly why I could never really recommend this car to anyone else. I think it looks fantastic, inside and out. It feels very classy. Most of all I love the 40 mpgs on the highway. The problem is that the build quality is absolutely appalling. The car now has just over 70,000 miles. I liked the idea of a diesel because they are supposed to last pretty much forever. Unfortunately the suspension has begun to collapse on one side, the roof upholstery is starting to fall off and the plastics on some of the interior surfaces are peeling off. The car has started to shake at 80 mph on the highway and it does not drive straight if I hold the wheel straight. It is beautiful car but I don't see it lasting nearly as long as I would like it to. Additionally disappointing is the performance. 0-60 in 12 seconds leaves a lot to be desired. The 40 mpg's could make up for the speed but the build quality is hard to overlook. I would say, if you are going to by a german car, get one built by germans, not one built in Mexico. I have nothing against Mexican workers but the facility in Pueblo was started as a cost saving measure. It shows.

Love/Hate Relationship

I fell in love on the showroom floor and immediately bought the 2005 Jetta 2.5. I got incredible features (rain sensing wipers, heated seats, dual climate control) and the car is FUN (I mean REALLY FUN)to drive. But then the problems started: radio and window buttons peeled and the trunk quit closing in the second year of owning the car. Then in the third year (at less than 36K miles) it broke down on the way back from a road trip. Three weeks later and with a rebuilt top half of the engine (a rocker spring in the 5th valve broke) I finally got my car back. Two weeks after that, the check engine light came on (faulty speed sensor). On a couple of cold mornings, the car has not wanted to start. Thankfully everything has been under warranty but now I'm in the market for a new car and Volkwagen won't get my business this time. I really wish this car had been more realiable because I LOVED it until I started worrying about not making back from a road trip.

Disappointing

I bought this TDI new in 2005. I was, and still am, thrilled with its appearance, comfort, and fuel efficiency. But it has had a continuous series of mysterious electrical-related problems (dash, remote, battery, radio, etc.) that have left me stranded, left the car at the dealers for extended periods, and, now that it's not under warranty, been costly. I've moved twice, and taken it to three different dealers over the years, so I don't believe it's a particular person's incompetence.
