Expert 2011 Audi S5 review

our expert's take
Our expert's take
By Cars.com editors
Full article
our expert's take

Vehicle Overview

The performance-oriented S5 and its layman twin, the A5, are aimed straight for their fellow two-door heartthrobs: the BMW 3 Series coupe and Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe. The S5 coupe comes with a 354-horsepower V-8, all the better to compete with BMW’s M3 coupe, and the cabriolet (convertible) has a supercharged V-6.

New for 2011
A new Titanium Sport Package available on the coupe gives the S5 black window trim, titanium-finish wheels, a black grille and black interior trim.

Exterior
The S5 is instantly recognizable as an Audi, with the brand’s customary wide-mouth grille flanked by lower air intakes. The car seems downright angry, thanks to a grille with vertical chrome bars and angular headlights. Exterior features include:

  • LED daytime running lights and taillights
  • Standard 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Available sport suspension
  • Quad exhaust

Interior
The S5’s dashboard looks much like that of Audi’s larger A6. A broad dome overlaps the gauges and central information screen, which incorporates the optional navigation system. Interior features include:

  • Front sport seats
  • Automatic climate control
  • Leather seats
  • Brushed aluminum trim

Under the Hood
The S5 coupe has a direct-injection 4.2-liter V-8 that’s good for 354 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque. The convertible has a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 333 hp and 325 pounds-feet of torque. Mechanical features include:

  • Six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission (V-8)
  • Seven-speed automatic transmission (V-6)
  • Standard all-wheel drive with rear-biased torque split
  • Zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds (coupe) or 5.1 seconds (convertible)

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Four-wheel antilock disc brakes
  • Side-impact airbags for the front seats
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Electronic stability system

  • Upgrades from A5 to S5 never happier

I started with the A5 cabriolet had many issue free miles (aside from recall issues which Audi was fantastic on correcting) . From day one my wife said I should have spent the extra and went for the S5 , so after 7 years and 80k miles I found the car of my dreams.in Dec of 2021 I purchased a 2011 S5 prestige with only 32k. This car is a whole different animal. The supercharged 6 is powerful and responsive and it makes even going to the store into a treat . Take the top down one the music up WOW is all I think of. Buying a low mile highly optioned S5 from Audi was the only way to go. The car is the best of all worlds as long as your not taking a group for a long trip( back seat is good but let’s be honest rear seat passengers weren’t Audis market with this one.

  • Exceptionally reliable and good looking

I have owned this car since new, 10 years in Feb/2021. I ordered the coupe from the factory with Lava Grey exterior (custom - saw it on an R8 on the sales floor and my 15 year old son convinced me to pay the premium) and Magma red interior with the manual gearbox. I ordered it with B and O stereo, Audi Drive Select, Navigation Package, Adaptive Cruise, 19” Titanium wheels, Carbon Atlas trim and TPMS as options. I bought winter rims and do seasonal changes. My comments: The MMI is easy to use (people complain about it but I don’t get it - it’s intuitive) I have driven the car 138,000 km’s in Canadian winter and summer. Always garaged at night, usually during the day. Usually just the driver in the car and mostly highway driven, so light load. The car was maintained by a local dealer (Southgate, Edmonton) and it has been excellent. I maintained it religiously by the Audi maintenance manual (no more) unless something is broken in which case I fix it immediately. I detail it twice per year. While I had fears about Audi reliability I have replaced a hood sensor outside of regular annual maintenance and nothing else significant. The car has been extremely reliable. I have been tempted to sell this car just because of its age but I can’t bring myself to do it. I love both the interior and exterior quality and look, especially the exterior. It is quick but not blindingly fast. I just think it is a great looking coupe. I really like the V8 and the manual gearbox. It won’t ever be a collectible and while I have bought new 911’s and an R8 RWS, I just love this thing. I guess my kids will sell it some day...most don’t want the manual - maybe someday they’ll see the light.

  • More fun then my 911 tubro

This car is as fast as my 911 more comfortable to drive daily, there were so many times I would be on the freeway and look at my speed and go " oh s.." as I was going 90mph or near it and have to slow down. The ride, lack of road noise, makes the car smooth smooth. With the AWD it hugs the turns with out any problems.

  • buy one and see

I've got 285K, since new, best car by far, totally reliable and very happy in the snow and rain. Keep the injectors cleaned once every two years, sounds and runs better than BMW's period.

  • Fun, luxurious, and reliable

This car is fabulous. It's fun and sporty, but luxurious and well appointed. Would recommend over and over again. Only downside is the low gas mileage.

  • Best all around athlete I've ever owned (tops GTR)

I have owned 13 cars. The most notable 4 being this Audi S5, a 2010 Nissan GTR, a 2013 Porsche 981S (Boxster/Cayman S), and a 2013 BMW Z4 sDrive35i. The S5 has a JHM tune for 375hp, the GTR was tuned for 700hp, the Porsche was stock at 315hp, and the BMW tuned for 425hp. Needless to say, all 4 of these cars were smoking fast. However, I must say that the S5 is the best all around athlete. It is not the fastest (GTR and BMW faster), but it is plenty quick enough. It doesn't handle like the Porsche, but it handles VERY well (I've got upgraded sway bar and end links plus the Sports Differential package). It gets more looks and complements than any of the other cars. It's exhaust is invigorating. And the interior is extremely classy. I like this car more than any car I've owned. You can't beat it's all around performance, looks, reliability, and luxury.

  • If you?re Into a classy sports car, this is it.

I love this car. I really only use it on the weekends and ?nite on the town ? I don?t want the miles to rack up too high. It?s a beautiful car, inside and out. You can feel the V8 power and hear the rumble. Not too many V-8?s left out there. This is honestly one of a kind. You can see the sleek look and it?s a head turner you?ll really enjoy it.
