"Ping, tick, and knock"
Get to know these sounds and you'll love my truck. It has the 5.3 liter and its has PLENTY of power and good MPG on highway, but after a cold start in winter, the engine knocks for the first 20 seconds and then quiets nicely. I use only synthetic oil for this sole reason. Especially during the summer, I run mid-grade gas to keep the pinging to a minimum, which dosen't always work. Super unleaded gas makes it not ping at all, but I can't afford to keep putting in expensive gas year round. After a hot restart, the engine ticks like a small marble swirling around in a soup can for 5 seconds. Annoying but not detrimental to engine. Its a lifter or 2 that looses oil and it takes time to refill. That does make the truck sound cheap though. The auto tranny is okay, but doesn't seem especially durable. The 4l60e is not one of GM's strong points. The truck looks nice and rides nice, but it somehow feels like it won't last as long as my old Chevy truck did. I can't believe how thin the brand new Silverado's sheetmetal is now. They don't dent anymore, they just crinkle like tinfoil. For me, the pinnacle of the Chevy trucks looks and durability came in 1998 with the good ole 350 and 4l80e. That's what I should have bought instead. My 2000 isn't bad, but its not what I thought it would be either.

Long time Silverado owner
I have owned and driven a Chevy Silverado for 12 years. We have two Chevy trucks and they have never broken down. We love our Chevys and will never drive anything else. Our 2000 Silverado has super cold A/C, better than anyone elses vehicle I've ridden in.

Best truck i've ever owned!!
Bought mine new.4.8l V8,4X4 ext. cab short bed.Around 23000 miles rear brake caliper went bad ruining the rotor.Replaced rear brakes under warranty.Did all required maintenance myself, very easy truck to take care of(even though dropping transmission pan to replace filter was a little challenging. Now 120000 miles and still on original brakes!!!New spark plugs, battery, shocks, just bought 2nd set of Goodyear's.Couple stereo pushbuttons lost the backlight by now.Truck still runs like a dream!!!Half city, half highway miles-averaging 18 mpg-can't complaint!

Most Reliable Care I've Owned
Purchased new. Traded in '94 F-350 for the Silverado 1500. I experienced better payload, gas mileage then the Ford F-350. Great transport / haul vehicle. Only repair has been a chip on the windshield from a thrown pebble on the highway. Other than maintenance items of a new battery @ 90,000 miles, new tires @ 80,000 miles, & routine oil changes every 5,000 miles, radiator flushed @ 60,000 miles & transmission serviced every 30,000 miles, & rear-end gear oil changed @ 70,000. the truck has been repair free. Take of your truck and it'll take care of you.

only a few big problems
Good truck overall. Somewhat reliable at 130,000 miles but big-dollar repairs have hurt my loyalty to the Chevy brand. Have replaced head gaskets twice. Have replaced anti-theft components twice at considerable expense. Pinging at cold start is annoying and can't be good no matter what GM says. Fuel pump is failing. Catalytic converters replaced. Pitiful Firestones replaced at 60,000 miles.
