Expert 2008 Lexus LS 600h L review

our expert's take

Given enough time, I’m sure I could have located it: There has to be a kitchen sink somewhere in the 2008 Lexus LS600h L. Certainly everything else is there — practically everything you can cram into a vehicle, Lexus has crammed into what Lexus General Manager Mark Templin calls “the flagship of the Lexus brand.”

If this is the flagship for Lexus, which is the flagship marque for Toyota, you can be assured that one of the world’s richest auto manufacturers cut no corners with this car.

So what we have is a huge, heavy luxury sedan that has a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, not unlike Toyota’s Prius. Well, sort of unlike the Prius — the LS600h L gets 438 horsepower from its gasoline V-8 engine and electric motors combined, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. Car and Driver magazine tested this Lexus, and got a quarter-mile time of 13.8 seconds at 106 mph, faster than a Pontiac G8 GT. Top speed is limited at 130 mph.

Not bad for a car that weighs 2 1/2 tons and still showed up with an HOV sticker from South Florida, meaning that as a hybrid, it can travel in the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on the expressway without having high passenger occupancy. And this particular model won’t: It had the optional “Executive Class Seating Package,” which eliminated one of the three rear seats, making this a 202.2-inch-long four-passenger car.

But, man, is it pleasant for those four passengers, especially the two in back: They get the “multi-function massage feature,” a rear-seat entertainment system, and a wood-trimmed table on which to conduct whatever sort of business people who can afford cars like this conduct in the rear seat.

Notice I haven’t mentioned mileage: The Lexus LS600h L — the “h” is for hybrid, the “L” is for the extra length, offering nearly 5 more inches of legroom — is EPA-rated at 20 mpg city, 22 mpg highway. Should you want a car that looks and feels a lot like this one, there’s the Lexus LS460 L, which isn’t a hybrid, and is rear-wheel-drive (the 600h L is all-wheel-drive): It lists for $78,030 trimmed out like the test Lexus — that includes the Executive Seating — and it’s rated at 16 mpg city, 24 mpg highway. But you don’t get an HOV sticker.

The LS600h L starts at $104,765, and with that seating package, the test car lists for $117,335.

So we have a hybrid that costs more than $100,000 and still averages just 21 mpg? Given today’s economy and gas prices, is anyone buying it?

Why, yes, they are. In fact, Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com), the online pricing service, says the base LS600h L, which starts at the aforementioned $104,765, actually has a “transaction price” of $110,003, meaning that customers are paying more than $5,000 over list price to get one.

We’ll let you guess who those customers are, but colleagues on the West Coast say that the car is quite popular with wealthy folks who lead a relatively high-profile life, where appearances — and the perception of being “green” — are important. “Limousine liberals,” one writer in San Francisco calls them.

He said it; I didn’t. I just drive the cars.

And this is, as you would expect, a pretty amazing car to drive. It can travel up to 25 mpg on electricity alone, and already being an astoundingly quiet car, this makes it seem downright eerie. Fortunately, you have a 19-speaker Mark Levinson sound system to make noise when needed.

On the highway, this Lexus feels like the heavy car it is, with a superb ride oblivious to potholes and bumps. It is not exactly nimble on winding roads — the steering is profoundly numb — but it’s never ponderous.

The list of safety features is just too long to include: If it has been invented, it’s probably there, including up to 11 air bags depending on the options packages. One of the more esoteric items: the “Driver Monitor System,” which uses a camera “mounted on the steering column to monitor the orientation of the driver’s face,” Lexus explains. “If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not looking directly ahead for a few seconds or more, and if an obstacle is detected ahead, it alerts the driver with a warning chime and flashing light.” If the driver doesn’t respond, the car begins applying the brakes on its own. Then, “to assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the steering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the steering response.”

Certainly the most complex and sophisticated vehicle offered to the driving public, the Lexus LS600h L serves as a rolling statement from Lexus. That statement: “Look what we can do!”

I’m still not sure what statement the owner of an LS600h L is making. But any statement is likely to come from the reclining rear seat, massager on full.

  • I have a 2015 LS 600hL and my dashboard de-lamented -

I have a 2015 LS 600hL and my dashboard de-lamented - faulty installation from Lexus. Mine is garaged with 51K miles. Lexus USA did absolutely nothing to correct the problem - not even a return email (classless). The replacement costs were - 16K for new dashboard and 2.5K to install. So I had is re-wrapped and a restoration shop in Denver for 3K. What I also did was legally tint the front windshield to eliminate the UV rays. Disappointed that Lexus did not stand behind their mistake. I want to share my story with all Lexus owners. If you have a Lexus with a leather dashboard - good luck.

  • FIRST LEXUS (used) HAS BEEN VERY GOOD

I’ve owned my AWD ‘08 LS600hL for 4 yrs (‘19-‘23 time of review). Has Original hybrid battery, 168kmi, still gets 20/29mpg City/hwy. I bought it for $11,000 with a noise in the front air bag cap & check eng light for a $800.00 emission gas sensor. Fixed everything for ~$1400. Replaced an air bag valve on the rear & spark plugs @ 160kmi. The 5.0L engine takes 10qts of oil & 2 air filters but they last many more miles than a normal gas engine between oil changes. My LS was really well cared for, still has a luxury leather smell and feel. Drvr lumbar motor went out but $1500 for new isn’t getting replaced anytime soon… Runs like a top & is a GREAT long trip car. The hybrid models have a “Pwr” switch that enables a larger % of hybrid battery and higher cvt transmission rev availability for instant power, which is one of the awesome reasons to own the 600hL. I don’t NEED this car, but it’s paid for and every time I drive it, it’s such a marvel of automotive perfection that I can’t sell it.

  • UNQUESTIONABLE PERFECTION

THE BEST THINKING IN SEEKING PERFECTION, SUPERIEOR ON EVERY LEVEL IN ACCOMPLISHMENT WITH REFINEMENT THROUGHOUT THE CABIN. I PURCHASED A BLACK WITH TAN INT. WITH 60K MILES IN 2014. NOT ONE PROBLEM IN 7YRS. FAST, OPULENT, PLUSH, SOPHITICATED, AND GORGEOUS. IT STANDS IN NO VECHILE'S SHADOW WITH AN ABSOLUTE PRESENCE ASSERTING ITSELF HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE COMPETITION. COUPLED WITH RELIABILTY AND THE LEXUS RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF PERFECTION. IF THIS DOES NOT STIMULATE YOUR SENSES THEN YOU ARE NOT ABOVE THE GROUND. IF YOUR ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO OWN ONE FOR CERTAIN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT THE LEXUS STATEMENT SIMPLY PUT "PERFECTION" AND NOTHING LESS. THE IMPECCABLE SUBLIME COMFORT OF A CRUISE SHIP AND EXHORATION OF INDY 500 RACE CAR IN ONE CUSTOM MADE TAILORED SUIT JUST SUPERB IN EVERY WAY HANDS DOWN. NOT TO MENTION FUEL CONSUMPTION IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING IN IT CLASS. IF THIS IS NOT A CLARION CALL FOR COMPREHENSION I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. WITHOUT FURTHER ADO ALL HAIL TO LEXUS AND THEIR ONWERS, JUST MAGNIFECENT.

  • 10 years later and I still love it!!

This is the 3rd update since 2010. The car is as new as day 1 in every respect- driving, comfort, looks. When I am working late or tired, it makes my drive easy and stress free whatever the MN weather. It simply eats up long drives like a private jet inside. It is way better looking IMO in its simple elegance than the overstated aesthetics of the current model. If you can get one used - they are bulletproof and beautiful and still better than most cars in 2020 at any price!! Between this and my 2013 Boxster S, I can't imagine needing anything else except perhaps a Jeep Gladiator Diesel or a Tesla pickup someday..

  • Best car I’ve ever owned.

Soo much fun to drive. Every option possible. Spacious with an aggressive look driving down the road. Really powerful with the quietness if the hybrid system. Sit back and recline and watch your favorite movie. Great mpg for a big body V8 sedan.

  • It is a Boeing 747 on the road

This car is the most comfortable car out of 27 cars I have owned and driven since age 16. very reliable, roomy high tech and more than anything its looks is what turns a lot of heads. I can't think of anything that this car does not have, No doubt it has been rated as the most reliable and comfortable sedan according to the consumer report for 13 years straight. I bought my 2008 LS600 hl with 30K on it in 2010. I have had it for 7 years now with over 90k. 5 oil changes at 10,000 mile interval, chaned battery at 80K and tires at 60K. No other issue. perfect vehicle.

  • My Lexus limo!!!

It is so amazing that Lexus put technology into making this vehicle in 2008, that is still relevant in 2017! This car is a work of art in every way imaginable! Plenty of leg room, beautiful navigation, excellent lexus reliability and gas mileage- it is a hybrid! This is probably the best car I will ever own outside of a Maybach Mercedes-Benz!

  • Amazing

I was going to buy a 460LWB and saw the 600hL. What a car. Someone paid $111000 for this car but it wasn't me. An entry level Chevy cost what I paid for this. I can't believe Lexus in 2008 had this kind of technology. This is my 5th Lexus and by far the best.

  • Best economical, luxury car I've owned

This vehicle exceeded all of my needs as a hybrid. The maintenance cost was not unreasonable. Luxury was well noted throughout the vehicle, particularly the rear passenger seat reclines and massages. The rear arm rest also serves as a cooling compartment fro drinks.

  • Update: 4 years later

I last wrote about my car June 5, 2010. Now 4 years later, very little has changed. I put snow tires on 18" wheels for the MN winters 3 seasons ago. Car is incredibly stable with absolute traction in even deep 5-6" of snow. Feel even more secure with snow tires. Just drove Minneapolis to MIlwaukee round trip and it remains a joy to drive. Amazing passing acceleration and smoothness. I own a 2013 Boxster S (which I love!) and yet the response of the LS600 from 50 -70mph in sport mode is as eager as the Boxster S. Car feels as fresh and new as 4 years ago in all respects. Still the best allrounder car. I still smile when I drive it - the love has not worn-off..
