Expert 2007 Subaru B9 Tribeca review

I distinctly remember the first time I saw a Subaru B9 Tribeca. I remember because I was taken back by the Cyrano De Bergerac like proboscis (big ol’ snout, for those less interested in the dramatic arts) on what is usually the grille of a car. It wasn’t until I drove the B9 Tribeca that I actually “got it”. That honker is supposed to look like the area of an airplane where the propeller goes. Obviously that is not an easy leap for my mind to make, Once I’d made the jump, I recognized it everywhere in the B9 Tribeca.

Sitting in the driver’s seat is like sitting in a cockpit. Even the lines of the dash mimic wings. I am comfortably tucked into my seat with all of the controls and gauges set out before me. There are so many things to look at that I feel distracted. At second glance, the controls are fairly easy to interpret and I have no problem figuring out how to run the air conditioner or even the navigation system. I do have some trouble, however, when I want to use any of the buttons that are directly in front of the gearshift. My hand has to bend at a weird angle to get the air in the car to re-circulate – maybe that is an aeronautical thing as well.

The back-up camera employs features I associate with airplanes. When I place the car in reverse the back-up camera shows the space behind me and also outlines the area with green, yellow and red runway lighting to show me how close an object is to being smashed. I test this feature in a small parking lot where someone has parked a testosterone-truck (you know the kind…) in a space just across the aisle from the Subaru. I rely on the camera to tell me if I am green, yellow, or red. Let me tell you girlfriend, do not get to the red – objects in your rear view camera are closer than they appear. Luckily I did not leave my good judgment at home this particular morning, so I didn’t actually find out how that enormous trailer hitch looks going through the back window – phew. I am a big fan of back-up cameras but, as I told my soon-to-be-driving teenager, the camera will never replace my eyes or my critical thinking skills (wow, I sound like my mom – scary).

The navigation system in the Subaru B9 Tribeca is almost as good as having a co-pilot. Its voice commands can easily be turned on or off, so I don’t have to listen to an annoying woman’s voice tell me where to turn. My only complaint is with the Point-of-Interest portion of the navigation system. I want to find a coffee joint near my parent’s house so I press the restaurant category button, then it asks me for the name of the business I am looking to find – huh? If I knew the name, I would not have gone through the category menu. Needless to say, I type in Starbucks and I am rewarded, but if I want to find a local java hot-spot I would be hard pressed to find a list in this system. Bummer.

The small folks in the passenger portion of the cabin are pretty comfortable in the second row. They can easily view the landscape from their window seats and even enjoy the in-flight movie on a long day of errands. It is not until we embark on a journey with additional carpool guests that I hear the complaints. The third row seats have such little foot room that my good-natured 5-year-old begins crying – his feet are literally squished and he can’t even pull them up to put himself in the crash position because they are stuck. I pull the car over and move the second row seat forward only to find that my 15-year-old carpool guest must now move to the center position to get a spot that will accommodate his knees. Long story short, the seven-passenger model rivals the airlines’ economy class for comfort.

I am impressed with the attention Subaru has paid to the airliner theme of the B9 Tribeca. As a matter of fact, even Wonder Woman’s airplane doesn’t have this much thematic integrity. It is a very functional aircraft, I mean vehicle, and my kids appreciate all flights, even those close to the ground.

  • A MUST READ HONEST REVIEW.

It is currently 06/13/2022, my 2007 Subaru B9 Tribeca Limited is (I mean this) the best factory SUV of all time. Of any brand, any year. I (24 y/o) was taught to drive a decade ago, in this car. Purchased it off from my mother, and still use it daily. I've owned other SUV's, and was a valet driver for 4 years which allowed me to drive just about any vehicle (besides the extreme) you can think of. I mean this wholeheartedly, my 7 seater, 2007 Subaru B9 Tribeca has been comfortable, seen 130mph, and has handled turns/curves at speeds any other SUV would never stand a chance with. This SUV defies sport utility vehicle. 180,000 miles on the dash, and will go 0-60mph in 7-8 seconds (fasted documented 7.38). I will hold onto this discontinued gem until the car world realizes the potential the H6 3.0 DOHC Boxer engine holds. When this car was manufactured I was playing little league baseball, I have been able to avoid life threatening accidents because of the responsive steering and control, driven through 9" snow storms and make it home safe. I've had the liberty, on closed courses, to drive in competitive timed course runs and beat out sedans like Lexus, Infinity, Honda, Toyota. Truly designed to be a "soccer mom" SUV, this vehicle has altered my perspective on modern day cars and SUVs. I cannot express enough how reliable, safe, and fun the B9 Tribeca has been to me through the years. The Subaru Ascent seems to be inspired from the B9 Tribeca, however I've driven it. Nothing compares. THE CLOSEST COMPARISON I HAVE: 2015 Audi q5 or 2017 Acura MDX. Thank you for reading, and please do not forget about the treasure that the Subaru B9 Tribeca, 7 seater, 4,100lb, 250hp H6 boxer engine, Symmetrical AWD has provided to the consumer for almost two decades. - Sincerly, Proud Subaru Owner

The only issue I have is replacing the head gasket but that’s a given w Subaru’s at high mileage. Other than that I love this vehicle.

  • Underated SUV

I have almost 140000 miles on my 07 B9 Tribeca and overall I am satisfied with it. The MPG is terrible I average about 16 on Premium fuel. The car has held up very well it looks much newer than it is. Even in PA there is no rust or corrosion. It is extremely comfortable on road trips and I would not hesitate to take it anywhere. The 3.0 engine struggles to haul this hefty vehicle at low RPM's but once it hits about 4000 RPM performance is acceptable. Besides suspension bushings and an A/C relay I have not had any issues outside of normal wear and tear. The interior has held up VERY well and every feature works as intended. I would purchase this vehicle again but would find a 08 or newer with the 3.6 engine.

  • Sleek alternative to the minivan

This was our first time purchasing a Subaru. As our family was growing, we were looking for a dependable alternative to the minivan. This Subaru Tribeca delivers. We lucked out in our used car search and found a fully loaded one 7 pasenger Tribeca (navigation, DVD, leather, etc). Very comfortable ride, averaging 19mpg but mostly city miles. Took in on a trip up to MI and averaged 24mpg. I quickly fell in love with my Subaru and ended purchasing the Imprezza Outback Sport as our secondary vehicle.

  • GREATER THAN YOU THINK

I bought my subaru tribeca b9 with 93 k miles and three years old. It was a very good deal. The car is a little lazy when starting to run but then it's a pleasure to drive it. I have a limited 7 seats model and my two daughters love to have their friends with us. Enjoy your tribeca.

I have had my Tribeca for almost three years now and now have 125,000 on it. It has been a wonderful car and I love every minute I spend in it. No problems with the car. I hope it last another 125,000.

  • This is my second Subaru

I absolutely love this vehicle. We got a seven seater as we are expecting our third child. It feels luxurious inside this vehicle with ample space for the whole family. We traded our 1997 Subaru Outback for this car and boy what an upgrade! We know how reliable Subarus are and are stable in all kinds of weather. We live in Northern California where rain and hail are regulars. I couldn't be any safer with than the AWD of this car. Every time we look at our car we just can't help but have "perma-grins". Another LONG TERM keeper from Subaru. Haven't you seen a lot of old Subaru's out there that out live their owners? Yes Subaru's will last forever.

  • great car for the money

I have had my 2007 B9 Tribeca for almost three and i have loved every minute of ownership! It is a great car. It is amazingly comfortable to ride in and for such a large car it has amazing performance and handling. I live in upstate NY and we get a lot of snow and the car handles it like a champ. The only problem i can see with the car is that the gas tanks is a little small and we have had to replace the front right bushing twice. But beside that this car is amazing and i would not trade it for the most expensive car in the world!!
