Expert 2011 Hyundai Veracruz review

Vehicle Overview

Though Hyundai likes to compare the Veracruz crossover to luxury models like the Lexus RX 350, shoppers will likely size it against less expensive offerings such as the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. The Veracruz seats seven in three rows and has numerous standard safety features. The base GLS and upper-crust Limited are the two trim levels offered, and a 3.8-liter V-6 is standard. All-wheel drive is optional.

New for 2011
Other than changes to the base model’s Premium Package of options, there are no significant changes.

Exterior
Swooping curves and two-tone bodywork define the Veracruz, which emulates styling themes set by Hyundai’s other crossovers, like the Santa Fe. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 17-inch wheels
  • Chrome window and grille surrounds
  • Standard heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals
  • Standard rear parking sensors
  • Optional moonroof
  • Optional power liftgate
  • Optional 18-inch wheels

Interior
The Veracruz’s seating arrangement includes front bucket seats, a three-person second-row bench seat and a two-person third row. GLS models have fabric seats, but the uplevel Limited trim gets leather upholstery. Blue backlighting illuminates the instruments, dashboard controls and cupholders. Interior features include:

  • Second row can slide forward to ease access to the third row
  • Third-row seat folds into the floor
  • Air-conditioning controls for rear passengers
  • Optional power tilt/telescoping steering column (manual tilt/telescoping standard)
  • Optional household power outlet
  • Optional backseat entertainment system

Under the Hood
The Veracruz’s 3.8-liter V-6 sees duty in a number of Hyundais, including the Azera full-size sedan. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the front-wheel-drive Veracruz are 17/23 mpg city/highway and all-wheel-drive models are rated at 16/22 mpg. Mechanical features include:

  • 260 horsepower, 257 pounds-feet of torque
  • V-6 runs on regular gas
  • Six-speed automatic transmission with manual control
  • Optional all-wheel-drive system includes lock mode that splits torque 50:50, front to rear, at low speeds

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  • Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system
  • Side-impact airbags for front seats
  • Side curtain airbags for all three rows
  • Active front head restraints

I have driven this suv since July of 2011. I have almost 160,000 miles. It is the best car I have ever owned and will drive it until it dies. I hate that it is no longer made. I have never had a moments trouble with it. Only replaced tires❤️

  • Fun to drive, no worries

I purchased this Veracruz used. It's the GLS version. I had test driven a Limited, which was much nicer on the interior. I wished I had bought the Limited, but I got a better deal. The transmission is great, shifts very smooth. Has just enough power. The steering is a little wild for my taste, very touchy. It has taken some getting used to. The cloth for the seats is subpar, not the quality of other vehicles. Love the 3rd row, plenty of storage space. There's a good amount of leg room in the second row. If I wrecked it, I'd definitely look for another one.

  • Best Luxury SUV Value Ever

Every feature imaginable, plus best warrantee, best styling, uses regular gas...and $10,000 to $20,000 under comparable Lexus, MBZ, BMW. Sorry Hyundai discontinued this model.

  • Great car for the money

Even as a used car, the Veracruz proved to be a very comfortable, tight, good looking cruiser. Plenty of creature comforts without going overboard. Balance of the 10 year, 100K drivetrain warranty is great to have (must be a certified, pre-owned to continue warranty). Only negative is the gas mileage, which at 16-17 mpg could be better. At least she runs on regular gas...

  • disappointed

We bought a brand new Veracruz in April 2011. We have had it in for service 4x in 8 months. The air bag lights and tire pressure lights keep coming on and off. I would not recommend if you want a reliable vehicle.

  • Best car I've ever owned

The only demerit this car gets is for the lousy LG made GPS, but everything else is perfect. Quiet, comfortable, and a joy to drive. I'm sold on Hyundai, and the Veracruz Limited is why!

  • Most enjoyable car I have owned

Out of the past 6 cars I have owned, my Hyundai is by far the most enjoyable to drive, and had been a piece of cake to maintain. I love going places in it and think that I have definitely made a purchase that will last me for several years to come. Thanks to my great salesman I was able to find a car with all the features I wanted. In other words, I love it!!!

  • Optional Navigation Package a Failure

After 3 months of back and forth for repairs, the dealership has finally admitted that the $2000 Navigation system does not work properly in the VeraCruz. Among other minor problems, the most noticeable is that the "Mute" feature in the steering wheel DOES NOT MUTE! The dealership has verified with other owners that they experience the same problem. The aftermarket dealer has tried numerous other brands of navigation systems and nothng seems to work. The back-up camera is installed as part of the license part holder. Good luck putting your license plate on! You must return the car to the service department, have them send the car out to the navigation specialist for the license plate to be put on your car.
