Vehicle Overview

The five-seat Forte is Kia’s entry in the compact-car segment, and it’s available with a choice of four-cylinder engines and comes standard with numerous safety features. It’s sold as a sedan, a four-door hatchback and a coupe, which Kia calls the Koup. Competitors include the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla.

New for 2012
For the 2012 model year, EX trim levels of the Forte gain a telescoping steering wheel and the Forte five-door hatchback is no longer available with a manual transmission.

Exterior
The Forte sports crisp styling that gives the sedan an athletic shape. You don’t have to look too closely to find resemblances to other small cars. The front end, for instance, looks similar to a Civic, and the Forte’s taillights look like the Mitsubishi Lancer’s. Exterior features include:

  • Standard 15-inch steel wheels with covers
  • Optional 16-inch alloy wheels
  • SX version gets sport suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Optional sunroof

Interior
There are available steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. Kia says the sedan’s trunk offers 14.7 cubic feet of cargo space, and the hatchback has 19.4 cubic feet of space. Interior features include:

  • Standard cloth seats
  • Optional leather upholstery
  • Optional heated front seats
  • Optional air conditioning
  • Optional keyless entry
  • Optional telescoping steering wheel
  • Optional navigation system with backup camera
  • Optional push-button start

Under the Hood
LX and EX models are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 156 horsepower. Choosing the SX trim brings a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that generates 173 hp. Mechanical features include:

  • Standard six-speed manual transmission
  • Optional six-speed automatic
  • Front-wheel drive

Safety
Standard safety features include:

  •  Side-impact airbags for the front seats
  •  Side curtain airbags
  •  Antilock brakes

  • Fun reliable car you can beat on

Got this car used in 2016 with 62k miles. Few years down the line I’m now at 130k with the only issue being the clutch needs replacing soon. Great car and very reliable! I definitely don’t drive this car nicely and it’s been holding up great. More impressed the ac works perfectly when I’ve seen some Chevys fail there by now.

  • The best car I’ve ever owned.

Even used, this vehicle impressed me endlessly. From the speed and power to the handling and fuel efficiency. It’s been my daily driver for almost 8 months and I honestly plan on getting another newer one (if they make it) after my SX dies.

  • Love the 2012 Kia Forte Koup

This is a Great Car!! 2012, purchased new. Racing red. 6 Speed Manual. Lots of get-up-and-go. I'm 6'0" and good legroom in rear. Rides like a sports car .. a little stiff. Styling is perfect and still looks current.

  • Fun, Dependable Little Car

I bought my Kia Koup in 2012 and kept it for almost 7 years. It had most available options. Very dependable and economical but fun to drive too. Decent performance all-around - accelerations, cornering and stopping. Surprisingly roomy for a small car. No issues whatsoever for 7 years. Traded it at 70K miles for another Kia.

  • Gun to drive

It?s got some really good giddy up and go. The interior is very nice. My only complaint is it?s really low to the ground and it?s very light and doesn?t do that great in winter though I have never gotten it stuck during the two Minnesota winters I?ve had it. So it gets you where you want to go fast and in comfort and style.

  • Fun car to drive and own!

Besides the great color and styling of the car, I love how the interior controls are laid out. Easy to access. Easy to use. The blue tooth setup takes about 30 seconds. This car is very responsive on the road too.

  • Fun and Reliable with Great Gas Mileage

I bought this car after owning and loving a 2008 Kia Spectra SX. I loved the Spectra's size and peppiness, but wanted a bit more power and I LOVED the look of the Forte Koups. It's been incredibly reliable, it's very peppy, and I never find myself wanting for more power. It's easy to drive quickly, takes turns like a champ and the gas mileage, considering how quickly I'm able to drive it, is amazing. My only issues are that compared to my wife's Optima, the suspension is incredibly stiff, and when I shift, the stick and subsequent shifting motion feels plasticky compared to my old Camaro or friend's Mustang, but that's to be expected. Oh, and the road noise is definitely higher than I'd like it to be, but Kia did offer to spray the bottom of my car with a rust inhibitor, which would also cut down on road noise, I just never had the time to go in. I had 0 issues with the car from day 1, and even am able to fit 3 car seats in the back, although incredibly tight, it works in a pinch! I'd definitely buy it again-if I weren't looking to upgrade to a truck to use for truck things.

  • Sportiest car for the price

This car is very sporty. The tires sit low enough to give the feel of a sports car for the price of a kia. The steering wheel is rigid which makes every turn a rush! Great car.

  • Great Value and Gas Mileage, Head-Turning Looks

First off, I have to give it to Kia. They made a great-looking and reliable car. Being 6'4, I have plenty of room in the front seat, but I would not put someone my height in the backseat. It can comfortably carry two people, and the trunk space is impressive for a coupe, which makes it great for traveling. However, I wish they had followed what Hyundai did with the Genesis Coupe. Even with the 2.4L SX (174HP), this car is no performance/sports car. It gets great gas mileage (I average 35 on the interstate with my 2.0L EX, 156HP.). Other than the lacking performance, I can't really complain. I get compliments on the Corsa Blue Metallic paint pretty much everywhere I go. I purchased this car in 2014 with only 14,000 miles on the odometer. I just passed 60,000 miles and have only had to get a transmission sensor replaced (under warranty) throughout my ownership of the car. So this car is monumentally reliable. However, with it being a car on the lower-end of the price-point, it does have its issues with quality. Since I purchased it, there have been a few air leaks and incessant rattles inside the car. The main air leaks are from the doors, and there's a rattle in the dashboard that I have not been able to locate. It's also not the quietest car when driving on the interstate. I typically listen to my music loud enough to where it's bearable. Other than the rattles and the air leaks, I have no complaints about the car. Maintenance is pretty straightforward since it's not an overly-technical vehicle. I've consistently used Mobil1 Full-Synthetic Oil, and most other maintenance I have been able to complete myself without a trip to the dealership. I would recommend this car to someone who commutes for work, or is going to college. I purchased this car my sophomore year of college and it has gotten me through my Master's degree. So, overall, I have to give the car a very good rating for reliability, gas-mileage, and even with the leaks, I have to give it an above-average rating on quality. Great work Kia, I've thoroughly enjoyed owning this car for the past six years!
